I have a chihuahua but there's nothing he loves more than getting out of the house. Even if its just riding in the car with us or going grocery shopping. he sits so good in the shopping cart no one even notices him lol We take him hiking and kayaking. he's such a trooper. so long as no other dogs are involved. :/

Hello. I want to thank you for helping us the owners and our dogs in understanding each other and having a better relationship. I have a question about exposure and socialization. I have a min pin that I have had since he was three months. I have been trying to train him not to be so distracted and anxious when we go out. We used to do 2 to 3 miles run 4 to 5 times a week at the park. I have also tried taking him to the dog parks and he still shows distraction and anxiety. We recently adopted a rescue. She seems to be an amstaff. She's very reserved and calm and now I am getting the same anxious behavior when we go out. How do I work on exposure and socialization if my dogs are always pulling up the leash and distracted Thanks Kristin.

I thought that this was a great 4 point discussion on areas which are the basis of good dog behavior. I have a 2 year old German Sheppard My wife and I both work and we have limited time we can spend with the dog as Kristin has stated. My biggest challenge is slowing getting Kuma to interact with our 5 house cats. Kuma is cage trained so she has a place that is her's that she goes to when we say "Place". The biggest problem is she wants to "play" with the cats but they don't want to play with a 85lb GS. She has a very keen prey instinct so I have to be careful and keep her in a controlled environment to ensure she does not end up running through the house chasing the cats. It happened once and it was not a pretty site. Watching this video reminded me of the importance of Kuma becoming a full fledged member of the family. It's going to be interesting.

Hi Kristin, thanks for the video! We just adopted a labrador retriever puppy and she is about to be three months old this week. My problem is, ---i work from home and have enough time for her. I take her out for each potty, take her for a long (depending her mood, it can be shorter) walk to a park everyday, play with her everyday and train her twice a day... But still she can be hyper sometimes and not behave:/ (maybe still wants to play even more and bark a little, extremely hyper when people show attention... Bites even after chewing forever...) whenever she does not behave, i TRY to be calm but in the moment she doesnt want to understand i put her in the leash and continue doing my work... Is this not appropriate? what else can i do? How long should she play, how long should she walk? Best, Elif

does anyone know of a resource with, like, a maintenance schedule for must-have dog behaviors/tasks? I've trained my dog to do a lot of things but some of them haven't stuck very well, etc., and we've had to work on other things that are more useful or cause more problems. I really just need like behavior development and maintenance forms to help me figure out how to prioritize and structure the task training. have any of you guys seen something like that? thanks so much for any help!!

Every dog is different so not every maintenance schedule should be the same. I'd encourage you to write down what you're struggling with and where you're at with it (what locations are you struggling or good at). Writing it down often helps us visualize what we need work on and how to best focus on that task. Does this make sense?

My 6 month old doberman pup is ridiculously over the top excitable at every dog so we're advised to avoid, cross the street, distract him, take him to places where there'll be no other dogs to stimulate him. He's getting very little interaction with people too as of the current situation not being allowed visitors at the home . How can we better socialise him to avoid problems later? .

Hi, we love your videos! We want to get a border collie pup, but want to know what to look out for when choosing it? We have heard that people say both eyes should be black etc etc. Do they all generally like water? Also how much to you feed it. It might sound like a strange question, but somethimes they will keep on eating just because you are feeding them so much, or will it depend on each dog? Thanks
@Krissykris1468

+Hano Van Der Spuy Get a border collie from a reputable breeder please. The breeder will help you pick the right pup for your environment. DON'T go for a backyard breeder or farm, even though it can be alluring. OR you can adopt, then you already know exactly what you're getting! Feeding solely is dependent on the individual dog, activity level and weight. Look up Dr Karen Becker about whole food diet.

Hello, How should I go about introducing my dog to new areas? He is 4 (will be 5) and I would like to start taking him with me when we go to a family member's camper, he has never been there before but will know most of the people since they have come around our house before. Should I just keep him (on leash of course) near me until he calms down and adjusts or should I walk him around the whole campsite so he can see and smell everything right away? Also this year my family plans on doing more camping which means traveling who knows how far and bringing the dogs, he does good on car rides but should I introduce him differently to these areas since they are temporary and won't be there more than a weekend to a week? Also how do I go about all the other dogs we will end up in contact with? He is very dog selective so should I just let him see them from a distance and avoid actual contact in fear he does decide he doesn't like them and tries to or actually does attack or should I let him slowly greet them if he wants to? Thanks in advance for helping!

Jonea Swatsworth Introductions should always be set up to succeed. Exercise your dog well so that he's physically depleted and easier to manage. When you have a new area, having a dog on leash is the easiest because you can control what the dog does, however this can cause a lot of frustration is 'some' dogs, so you want to keep that dog moving and sniffing all the new things in the environment. Bring food rewards to treat him when he does something good and verbally praise him. If he is dog selective I would be careful with introductions on leash, because if you strain on that leash, it can trigger the dog to feel handicapped (no escape) and react out of fear. Try long walks with the other dog to help ease the pressure of a one on one meeting.

Hi, I have a 9 year old westie who just recently will not go out for walks. He gets excited to put the leash on but once we get outside our yard, he freezes, paw goes up and his hind legs shakes. He will not move. he is fine with the leash on but doesn't like it when he feels pressure on the leash. He started doing this after I took him walking with another dog that was wearing a muzzle. Are there other things I can do to physically exercise him? Thanks, I just started watching your videos and you have excellent tips!

+Xee Xiong Sometimes changing the dogs pattern can help them. Try driving him to a different location and trying there, working backwards (far away from home and slowly moving closer each time). Have you also tried sitting with him outside and just playing with a toy or feeding treats? Sometimes it can be very overwhelming for dogs so we need to help them get their mind off all that and onto us!

I totally failed in the socialization with other dogs, he will get nervous around them and bark like crazy. With people he tends to jump on them, being a golden this usually scares most of the people. I don't know what to do and I'm afraid I don't even have the resources to help them with other dogs/people.

Hi my names Cher and I've only just started watching your videos and I'm not sure where I leave my questions as I have a few that really need solving my first one is when I take my dogs out for a walk I occasionally stop and when I do my my oldest of 3 grabs hold of he's lead and really tugs at it and doesn't let go even when I've tried walking on with him, I've tried pulling it off him but I guess he can misinterpret it for a tug game, I've even tried telling him calmly to let go or offered him a treat and it just doesn't work please help

***** I would watch my "impulse control" video where you teach tug and put it on cue "tug ........leave it". This should work perfectly for that issue unless there is another reason for the tugging such as redirected excitement or frustration.

+Kristin Crestejo Hi I am getting a border collie next spring (so that I can have the summer to train and be with the young puppy) I just have a few questions about puppy training and border collies specifically. I have been doing excessive research on the breed for over 4 months, and I have visited 3 different breeders and worked with border collies many times. I am thirteen years old and have always dreamed of a dog, but I just want to be the right trainer and friend to my doggy companion. Question 1: Should I build a large outdoor runner/kennel for the dog to be in while I am at school and my parents are working? Or should I crate train the puppy and have her stay in there? Or after a few months of good training leave her with full run of the house/full run of a floor of house? I am at school for 7+ hours with activities, but this will be primarily a family dog and my parents have different work schedules. The border collie would be by itself about 3-4 days of the week for about 4-5 hours on those days. My dad can work from home a few days per week, so then she would not be home alone at all for another 3-4 days. It would just vary, but all in all, she will NOT ever be cooped up all day. That would horrible to do to a super active breed such as the border collie, or any dog for that matter. My plan for days in which she would be home alone longer is that I would wake up when I normally do on school days (5:30) and take her for a 3-4 mile run and some Frisbee tossing in the nearby meadow. I am a daily cross country and marathon runner, so this will not be a problem for me as I run every morning anyway. Then around 5 or 6 p.m. she will go on a 7-10 mile bike ride with my family (we love to bike!) Plus, when my parents are home from work they will be helping with training, playing, and interacting while I am away. (Sorry I am saying so much, I am just trying to be as detailed as possible) Question 2: Is there a way to train the new border collie to understand the routine? For example, she knows that in the morning she will get her exercise, but when we all leave she needs to know that it is time to settle down and sleep/be calm. I don't want a dog that will freak out the minute I step out of the house. How long do leave Luna home alone while you are away/working? How does she handle it? Where do you leave her when you are gone? Question 3: How are border collies as overall pets? Are they good dogs with the proper training? I would like a best friend, and a family member, can border collies be that? Question 4: Could we ever travel with her? My family is pretty big on traveling, BUT we would give it up if we had to stay with the border collie. We have a planned month trip to Europe next summer that I have to miss to be with the future puppy, and I am okay with that. But, is there anyway we could travel with a puppy, or an adult bc? I cannot think of any more questions at the moment, and I apologize for the rant, but I would really like any help. THANK YOU! I have been really excited, but also super stressed out about getting a dog. I just hope I have the right lifestyle for one :) Best wishes, Annamaria

Annamaria Tomovic That's a lot of questions so I'm going to shorten my response up for you. A border collie is a dog like every other dog, except it's a Genius Olympic athlete that need mental stimulation and physical stimulation in order to be fulfilled and content. If you do not provide these, you will have the worst dog in the world! A Border Collie requires a minimum of 4 hours of mental and physical stimulation per day. They NEED constant work, a job that fulfills their problem solving abilities. These dogs will run you if you do not provide stable rules, structure and consistency in their life. The herding side of these dogs are very strong and they will chase anything that moves if not trained right away. This can be dangerous and even prevent physical exercise because the dog will fixate on cars or other animals and will not listen to you, so many people stop taking the dog out because it's too hard. You can do anything with this dog if you make him or her your family and never abandon it. Luna is my day and night, she takes up every minute of my time when I am not at work. My social life is pretty poor because I refuse to leave her behind, I never go on vacations that require flight because she can't join us in the cabin. She is an amazing companion and dog and I would never trade her in a million years or for any amount of money, she is my half that makes me who I am. If you are willing to give half of your life up for your dog, then a Border Collie is right for you. If you want to have friends and hang out, be a normal teen then don't get one, you'll regret it.

Kristin Crestejo Thank you Kristin for your time, this was very helpful. I am in love with this breed, and no, they are NOT your everyday poodle house dog. I will watch your videos and I am really preparing myself for a Border Collie. Is there specific ways to train the chasing cars/people/other animals out of them? I know it can never be fully gone, but it can be controlled.

I got a border collie pup- he's currently 6 months old- and many people say it's best for an adult to train a dog but I'm 12 years old and he knows- sit, paw, who's your best friend,lay down, up, stay, spin, jump, under, where's your ball, drop and currently learning army crawl. He also knows the names of some of his toys. He knows how to come when called and he doesn't bite his leash. But i want to teach him to walk by me when we are walking to the park and then when I'm there he goes of lead. Do you have any tips? Thank you 😊

So I have this 4 year old Boston terrier and my family has had her in the backyard for all that time with a doggie door that goes into the house into this large kennel. So she obviously has not had any potty training during that time and right now for the past couple months, i've had her in the house in a crate for most of the day. I take her out side to use the bathroom a couple times a day and I'm using this bell that a bought that hangs on the door nob for the dog to use to let me know she needs to go outside to pee. I've followed the instructions for the bell but my dog will only use it when I bring her to the door myself. So basically if i just let her wander around the house instead of ringing the bell she pees on the carpet. Please please give me some advice on ways to train my dog. thanks

Mila Sjulstad I don't really know where to start, but if you have another look at the video, you can check to which extent you meet the points that Kristin is explaining. Potty training is one thing - but to me it seems that your dog is missing out on all 4 of Kristin's points. It is not surprising that she pees in the house. Crates are for short stays only - not a solution for most of the day. Your dog needs to be out of the crate a lot more going for walks, socialising and having mental stimulation.
@Krissykris1468
@Krissykris1468 9 жыл бұрын
Mila Sjulstad You need to start this dog ALL over. This dog either has a medical problem to prevent house training or has learnt that peeing in the house is the way it's been done. We must understand that when a dog goes to the bathroom...it's SELF reinforcing, it's relieving. So if the dog is going inside, that dog is being reinforced to go inside. You need to get this dog outside and peeing outside every hour for 1 week when you're home. If no accidents, increase by 30 minutes. If accidents happen, decrease by 15 mins. Manage the dog while you're not around so she can't pee while you're not there, enclose her in a small room, like a kitchen with baby gates. Each week with success, increase the time by 30 minutes. At the same time, HIGHLY reward her when she goes outside, give her a big treat when she finishes (right away, and given outside) so it's more motivating to pee out there. Don't focus on teaching her HOW to tell you, you need to show her where to go first then in time, she won't want to go inside and will find her own way of telling you.

Hi Kristin, Do you have any suggestions for a dog who suddenly refuses to walk down a certain street/area due to a frightening experience? My dog was walking down a usual street until a car passing by ran over a juice box, creating a large 'popping' noise. Since then, whenever we go near that point, she frantically starts to pull and go back the other way. I've tried to desensitize her again by bringing treats on our walk up to that area, but once we get there, she's at a point where she'll ignore treats and just want to get away. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

caaarmyish Ah, this is what happened to Luna too (you can actually see her getting anxious in my Canine Body Language Video, part 1. Go slow, never force. One time take your dogs favourite toy or food and as soon as you see the dog going "don't wanna!", ask for 1 step forward (very easy) and then once he or she gives you that, move away (where the dog wants to go - safety of course). Once the dog is not panicking, repeat. Look up Behavior Adjustment Training by Grisha Stewart. It's using the dogs own reinforcement (to get away) as the reward for moving forwards. It's astonishing how well it works when you give the dog a choice and let them go at their own comfort until they realize, "it didn't kill me".

Hi! I have questions about BC and I can't find the answers so I hope you can help. I'm 14, I am passionate about dogs and I love border collies. I'm just scared that I won't be able to make the dog happy.. -Is it better to get the puppy during the summer, or when school starts so he is already on my schedule? -Will he be able to wait 8 hours while I am at school or will he be unhappy? (I know I have to crate train the dog before leaving him alone) Should I pay for a dog walker? - I would loooove to teach a dog lots of tricks and run with him each morning and night, play fetch for hours, teach him to catch a frisbee. But when I do research, some people seem to think that you have to be with a BC 24/7... Is it true? Will they be unhappy 8 hours alone? Thanks :)

+Jasmine beauparlant Hello! You would want to get a puppy when you have time off to be able to train him or her and allow him to adjust into your environment, then slowly adjust to your schedule. You cannot leave a puppy in a crate for 8 hours, he needs to goto the bathroom every 4 hours minimum until he is 7-8 months old. Daycare would be a good option or a dog walker. Otherwise you will be teaching that dog to goto the bathroom in the home. I will say Border Collies love being with their human, it's what they live for. So it can be hard to leave a dog for 8 hours straight, right off the bat, but you can train them to accept this, but it will be a lot of work and you will need help in order to not have behavioural issues in the long run. The longest I left Luna in the first two years was 3 hours. She went everywhere with me, and still does!

you probably won't see this but i need help, my family an i just recently got a new puppy from a breeder and we bought a pad that goes on the floor so he wouldn't pee on the carpet or anything but now he only does his business on the pad and doesn't go when were outside which isn't bad but he needs to go outside. do you know how we can successfully introduce him to going outside to pee?
@Krissykris1468
@Krissykris1468 8 жыл бұрын
+Nina B Stop with the pee pads! haha. This accidently teaches dogs to pee inside. Management is your best friend, get the pup out BEFORE they pee. This may be taking the dog put every 30 minutes while you're home. The point is to make it desirable for the dog to go OUTSIDE, not inside. Peeing and pooping is self reinforcing, feels good when you go, so if the dog is practising going inside the majority of the time, he's learning from it. Check my website soon, I have an ebook coming out on house training :)

+Nina B Teach the command "go pee-pee/go potty/" etc. and it helps a lot to introduce the dog to peeing in a new area. Also, now if you see him peeing on the pad, WHILE he is peeing, tell him No and move him to where he needs to pee, if he has pee left and continues to pee where you want him too, TONS of praise to follow. I find that catching them in the act of doing something unfavorable and saying No really helps to train out the behavior.

I have a question. I go outside to play fetch with my dog, but he wont bring back the ball most of the time. He really wants me to chase him. He parades around and then finally lays down to squeak the ball and chew it. IF I go inside, he will immediately bring the ball with him to the door and set it down. How can I work him to doing that without having me go inside each time I want him to bring me the ball?

Jossy Poleiatto You don't need to be your dogs master. You can be your dogs friend and have a better behaved and better listening dog in the long run. Remember to respect that a dog is a dog, they have their own brain which includes their own wants and needs that we need to fullfill as their guardians/owners. I've seen a 6, 9 and 10 yr old have complete control over their dog when using the proper training and understanding their individual dogs needs. My cousins dog is locked up in their garage all day, and the only time he's let out is when he has to go to the washroom :/ I'm upset

Great video! Please.. please push the bottom left of painting a tiny bit closer to the frame to line it. My OCD is going haywire. The other one past the door frame is perfect. P.s, I'm just being a hardass.

I don't understand the reluctance to say dogs are intelligent. They are. They are among the most intelligent of animals.

How do you convince the dog owner that she needs to be consistent with correcting her dog's behavior? This is way harder than training the dog!

Just wondering have you ever got bitten by a dog?

Yes, when I was just starting out with behaviour related problems. I pushed a dog past its threshold and ignored the warnings, it bit me on my leg and made a nasty bruise and cut. I learnt from it and have stayed safe since.

Kristin Crestejo, CDBC I like your video so much. Have learnt a lot from it. Just wondering how you could overcome the fear of getting dog bite?My dog shows aggression on me(bite and cut). When I do counter conditioning on it, the fear will come to me.

Hi Kristin, If the dog is always with another dog that counts for social interaction right? they play a lot.

Isn't it better to get a pup than to adopt a 1 year old that has maybe been abused or already picked up wrong behaviour?

+Hano Van Der Spuy No, not at all. Not all rescues are broken dogs, there are many that are wonderful dogs and have no issues whatsoever. My retriever has NO issues and he was a rescue, but my Border Collie had issues and I had her since she was a pup.

I'd prefer to adopt every time. Puppies are VERY hard work and a well socialised rescue is SO much easier to deal with.

People don't know all of this then we have "aggressive dogs" which need to be put down for example...

Condescending much? I know you're only trying to get your point across, however many haven't done ANY of the wrong things you mentioned and are only here to learn- and you're speaking down to your audience makes it a very uneasy video to watch.

Perhaps you should address your anger and paranoid issues before even consider getting a dog. Kristins videos are excellent.
