Here's a little news clip for anyone that would like to learn more about the picnic comment: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3jRpKGnltedrdk There's obviously so much more to it than my couple second convo. It's always so interesting what gets pulled out of these episodes. But as many said, the word picnic itself is not racist. However, due to context many people find it has racist connotations and can be insensitive. It's all about context.
@rpstgag2 жыл бұрын
If people make an honest attempt to be educated & sensitive to the very real history of racial terrorism & pogroms in this country, I'm of the opinion that they shouldn't twist themselves into knots of anxiety about innocuous word choices. Moving through life with a praxis of cross-racial solidarity is more important to me than someone signaling their Officially-Not-Racist™ credentials through language. And not that I speak for any Black person's experience other than my own, but I was never taught to be tetchy about the word picnic where I grew up in the South. It just wasn't a thing until the last 10ish years. As a young adult (circa 2009), none of us in my Black Studies program had a problem with the word picnic... UNTIL we heard the urban legend (which sounds like it *could* be true history, though it's an internet-era tale). It was a short-lived sensitivity. Our field of study meant that the b.s. was quickly corrected by our professors, but A LOT of Black folks have come to believe this fabricated picnic history.... To the point where they call news stations about it, apparently.
@soniam6032 жыл бұрын
I watched the clip. I am from Sweden and since Sweden has been in close contact with France and other countries in Europe the word didn't come to Sweden from the US, but directly from France. For an example a Swedish lieutenant used the word in his memoirs in the 1700's. I understand the horrifying history and why some people may find that the word is connected to lynchings, but the word itself is so innocent. As an example we can talk about nordic mythology. The Swedish nazis really love to wear the Thors hammer around their necks and claim the nordic mythology. For history nerds like me it can become a problem who love to talk and read about our nordic history. Maybe also for those who love the Marvel movies. Don't let the nazis claim Nordic history and don't let some psychopaths from the south of the US claim the word picnic. It is too much.

Hey guys, just thought I’d let you know as a mixed race, part Black, French speaker. There absolutely IS a history of people having festival like occasions around lynchings and that should be remembered. But the word and event picnic has nothing to do with that in origin. Picnic comes from the old french Pique-Nique which literally translates to “little dig.” It describes an event in which a small gathering of people each contribute a dish to a “little dig” or party. In addition, Dr David Pilgrim, a specialist in the history of Jim Crow law confirmed that picnic can be seen in use all the way back in 1600’s France referring to completely neutral social parties and it’s use in English did not originate in the US or in any way related to racially based hate crimes. The origin of this rumour was, in fact, anonymously posted screenshot with no sources whom multiple Black historians have discounted, and it’s a rumour especially irksome to French-creole Black language speakers as picnic is very commonly thought to have come to the USA through French creole language. EDIT: Just looked it up, and though the originating claim was made by anonymous screenshots, apparently this was popularized by Florida politician Robert McKinzie. Also, I asked a fellow French speaker just now who speaks the French from France (I speak an African-indigenous dialect popular in the Caribbean) about how she associates the word Pique-Nique. To me it meant simply a party. To her, the word Pique-Nique is associated with the French Revolution when revolutionaries would set up things called Pique Nique societies to meet on a schedule and have a small social party where they explored various political ideas that could get them arrested if discovered, which is why they covered up these meetings as Pique Niques. I thought these were important additions. Extra fun fact Edit: Apparently I translate Pique Nique as “little dig” but she translates it as “little thing” as in short for piquer-nique or “pick a little thing to bring.” Interesting different dialectical interpretations. The most all encompassing article in the fact with testimony from both American Black History specialists and French Linguistic specialists: www.politifact.com/factchecks/2019/feb/21/robert-mckinzie/fact-checking-myth-word-picnic-racist/

Alimony (which is usually now called Spousal Support) determinations have nothing to do with things like cheating. Only about financial earnings/abilities to earn. So if someone was a stay at home mom for 10 years so husband could build huge career, she could potentially get spousal support for a period of time so she could get a degree/build up to decent employment earning ability. The idea would be to counter the effect being out of the work pool for 10 years would have on her ability to earn a living once the divorce is final. It's rehabilitative.

On the wedding dress story: I bought mine last week and I have some thoughts on what you said about talking to your partner about it. Before I went dress shopping I was absolutely certain I would buy a very simple, “clean” wedding dress without any kind of embroidery and such. I had a whole Pinterest board ready and even showed it to my partner, just to confirm that we have similar taste in the dress. (I already knew what he likes but it’s always good to make sure imo as sometimes you think of the same concept wiiiildly differently, what it simple to me might not be simple to you.) He told me he would prefer me in a simple dress as he loves the type but would still be fine with whatever I chose as he trusts my taste. Well… I went dress shopping, found the one and it’s pretty much the opposite of simple. It has leaves and flowers and tulle - and honestly I look like a forest fairy in it. I love it so much. He’s not gonna see my dress until the wedding but I did warn him that my dress looks very different from what he expects. I know he is gonna love it because I love it but I always think it’s good to be prepared. Long way to say: if you do something unexpected, maybe let your partner know so they can adjust their expectations and fall in love with whatever you’re doing.

The family who accused the woman of being a gold-digger sounds exactly like a narcissistic family dynamic. Devaluing her to elevate themselves… the son keeping the peace by keeping quiet. The gaslighting from the son (most likely a learned behavior from the parents). Definitely run far from this family. What a nightmare!

@@SM-ru8ud I think there might be a difference in whether you listen for the group dynamic versus listening for the stories. I'm somewhere in between. I actually do feel like the more recent episodes HAVE been quite rambly, to the point where I either skip or just watch the shorter clips. But if I listened to hear from Morgan, Lauren etc. I'd probably be more interested in the OT discussions. If I only wanted stories, honestly, it would be very hard to listen to.

As soon as I heard the story about the couple who spoke Japanese I instantly thought of when the boyfriend said that he didn't want her to be his family's favorite they've only been together a short time etc. does that mean that he doesn't want them to have a connection and he doesn't plan on keeping her around?? That to me implies that this isn't permanent for him. 🤷🏼♀️

23:44 “and my brother was still wasn't proposing” ***Talking about giving your partner an ultimatum to propose “so many people have to do that because their partner isn’t ready” That is just so crazy to me to think that getting married is something you need to be ready for at some point in life. I live in Canada so maybe it’s way different in America but in Canada, every perks you have when getting married (mostly money related) you can just make a contract. There is nothing you can only do by getting married so for me, getting married is nothing more than a love gesture. And you shouldn’t be pushed to do this love gesture, and you shouldn’t feel entitled to receive this love gesture. Also, why can’t women ever propose. It’s crazy to me that a woman would pressure her boyfriend to propose, like do it yourself? To me proposing could be the equivalent of saying “I love you”. You say it if you feel it and you shouldn’t feel pressure to say it, and it might never come. I know more people that have children together without being married than the other way around! No hate to Morgan btw, it just really seems to be a big difference between Americans and Canadians (especially in Quebec)

I’m Mexican & let me tell you if my husband spoke Spanish as good as this girl speaks Japanese he’d most definitely be the favorite. Morgan in some id even dare say most minority families they already feel out of place to speak English especially the elders of the family so when a newcomer come into the family and they speak their native language it makes them feel more comfortable & yes sometimes makes their experience in getting to know them much better than someone who’s come into the family and has been around for 10 years that doesn’t speak a lick of their language. Sometimes the newcomer becomes the favorite when they already speak the language. There no other “deeper reason” , if he’s feeling so deep on it. He doesn’t want to hear shit from the other family members because he’s probably not used to being confrontational with them to be like “ if y’all have a problem then y’all should try to make more efforts to learn” This is Generational Trauma at its finest.

It’s not wrong, it’s just different. And you’ve got wonderful people in your life like Lauren who don’t even notice or care when you do things like interrupt each other because that’s your norm ❤ ETA: CAUGHT THAT JUSTIN EASTER EGG 😂

For the last story: I feel like most of the time people push their traditions so hard and/or have such strict views because they themselves were forced in to compliance at some point and they don’t want to see anyone else get the opportunity to ditch the tradition. I hope that makes sense.
@katiefielding62202 жыл бұрын
Morgan you are being incredibly misleading. The etymology of “Picnic” did not originate from the lynching spectacles of black men in the United States. David Pilgrim, the founder and director of the Jim Crow Museum, wrote an article in 2004 which stated: “The etymology of the word picnic does not suggest racist or racial overtones. Picnic was originally a 17th Century French word, picque-nique. Its meaning was similar to today's meaning: a social gathering where each attendee brings a share of the food.” Just because some lynchings were accompanied by picnics by some inhumane people does not mean that the word is evil or problematic. I love you and the podcast but please do your research before you condemn common words for misinformed reasons, especially with your large platform, many of whom are not from the USA and therefore our use of the word “picnic” is even further removed from your American history. Thank you.

On the topic of regular mental health screenings, they kinda do them at my gynecologist office whenever I go in! It’s a really basic set of questions but they cover the most important ones to see where you’re at. I answered yes to a few of the more scary ones and they gave me some papers and pamphlets with information on getting help and that’s how I ended up at the therapist that I’m seeing now! If they didn’t take the time to ask me those questions I don’t think I would have sought out therapy on my own because it was such a daunting task in the headspace I was in. I will always be grateful to them for doing that for me. I hope it becomes a more regular thing!
