In November 1981 Queens Transit tested a Hungarian made Ikarus articulated bus (type 280?). In this film we see some driver training in the depot yard, now the site of MTA Bus College Point Depot. Once known as Queens-Nassau, MTA Bus took over Queens Transit in 2005. The company had two busy routes between College Point/Whitestone-Flushing and Jamaica (Q25/34 and Q65), plus a Woodside-Flushing route over Northern Blvd (Q66), Jewel Ave (Q65A), the Long Island City - Middle Village route (Q67), the Co-op City - Flushing (QBx1) and numerous express routes between northeast Queens and Manhattan. There was a modest charter business as well, which was legally problematic for a company that was accepting government subsidies for both Capital and Operating expenses. This test bus is in Portland Tri-Met livery and I must assume was absorbed by their fleet after the demonstration at QTC.
There is a detailed history of American Ikarus at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown-I...

When I shot this film it cost me money and I was not sure it was worth it and never thought it would be so popular. Thank you.

the 286 and the silver sides were the top hardest working buses for there days in ottawa octranspo really did their best to keep the ikaris 286 buses on the the road even as a stop gap mesure between 2001 and 2003 and the articulated buses new flyer that city of ottawa ordered underpowered and over worked 4 cyniders torbo charger expecially slow with the ac on also very limited ventilation openig windows that replaced the ikaris 286 were much better then the ikas

Thanks for the video! It's so surprising to me to watch Ikarus bus in the USA. There were a lot of this buses in USSR and other eastern europe countries, so this bus is the bus of my childhood. Nowadays some Ikarus 280 buses are still used in Russia.

I heard OC Transpo remanufactured their fleet of 286s instead of retiring many of them like the TTC did. They even picked up some TTC units and ran them until 2003.

When this video was recorded in 1981, my late Father, Bill Murphy, was working for Queens Transit as a mechanic in the Body Shop. A lot of fond and fun memories of accompanying dad to work on occasion on Saturday Mornings. Dad retired from Queens Surface Corporation in 1988, after 36 years of service. May he rest in peace.

Do I see what looks like TriMet (Portland, OR) livery on that Crown/Ikarus 286? TriMet did, in fact, have 87 of this kind of buses in operation in the years 1982-99.

It's the scheme, but I think TriMet simply adopted the demonstrator scheme for their standard.

So there's a new algorithm called DAIN which claims to smoothen the framerates and is able to increase the video FPS to around twice the original FPS. Do you remember if you shot this at the 18fps or 24fps setting? It's pretty important so that the algorithm can properly smooth out the fps.

The articulation looks so tiny,it seems hard to turn and the attrition on the back tires must be tremendous
@winMANhun

The C axel is steered too, so it’s extremely easy to turn with the Ikarus 280 series. They have to same turning radius as the solo (not articulated) models.

Well I mean the gmc does look absolutely disgusting. And the cummins engine didn't help. Would've worked better with the original Rába engine.

These were the CRAPPIEST buses at TriMet... Even the D40LFR's are better... They were SLOW and all them had to have frames rebuilt when they were new. Ikarus aren't good at all
@OregonTransitFan
@OregonTransitFan 7 жыл бұрын
Ikarus were only popular in Hungary and the areas around it. That's just nonsense you are saying that they were most popular. MAN was more popular in Europe. I'm sorry but GMC, Flxible, Gillig, and New Flyer dominated North America 70's-90's
@OregonTransitFan
@OregonTransitFan 7 жыл бұрын
And you bet I have logical reason to say these soviet buses are trash. Transit operators hated them. Had to be rebuilt within a year, causing unnecessary delays and costing the systems money. They were slow so drivers hated them
@OregonTransitFan
@OregonTransitFan 7 жыл бұрын
Ours had 14 liter 350 HP Cummins. Nothing gets tougher than that. And it wasn't a manual... It had Allison HT 740, a world class heavy duty transmission. Can't blame the USA for the terrible build quality lol
@KevinCNYC1991
@KevinCNYC1991 7 жыл бұрын
If they were crappy, why did they nearly last twenty years? Sure they were not perfect, but I'm aware of other buses like Neoplan, Flxible, GMC, etc. that also had issues with their buses too. Ikarus worked out the issues on them and they performed fine. The reason they were slow was because TriMet repowered those buses with 6L71TA engines (instead of keeping the Cummins they had), which were very slow on any bus that had them, whether it was a Flxible or an articulated bus like the Ikarus.
@OregonTransitFan
@OregonTransitFan 7 жыл бұрын
Trimet usually keeps buses 20-25 years. It helped that they rebuilt them but by the time they were canned they were in such terrible condition. Heck, they even had 1972 Flxibles until 2000.
