raw edges on woven fabrics: part 2

Hi guys! this week we have part two of our raw edge sewing series. In case anyone wonders I am wearing my Burda 6358 pants with my studio tunic and I will include a link for that pattern and my video on those pants below.

What? The new pinking shears don’t hurt the hand?!? I need new pinking shears! ❤ The first time I noticed a raw edge was on a skirt hem, very stringy! I was “outraged “ 😂 ! KAI scissors are THE BEST!! I'm a quilter and use their rotary blades; the best I've ever used.

I love your Studio Tunic! Thank you for the very helpful tutorial on creating raw edges! If the interfacing shows perhaps go in and trim the facing it a bit closer to the seam line. The interfacing should work to stabilize the seam on the trimmed facing. I have KAI shears and absolutely love them (they were a game changing addition to my sewing room!) ...now to get their pinking shears. My pinking shears while they work great are a bear to use---super stiff--so I avoid them. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the skirt!

Love the Studio Tunic, have made 2, one in a pretty heavyweight wool jersey, and a lighter weight raw silk, wear them all the time, in their time (seasonally). It ties an outfit together for me I really love, so found a 90’s overall dress pattern, cut out of an embroidered denim. Not sewn yet. Fraying the edges good idea, as I found the facings too big, and overlapped inside the shoulder. A drafting issue I corrected the second time around. But I do love the look. Linen is perfect, thanks for all the ideas. I’ve got that skirt pattern cut out, probably not going to get to it for a few weeks, but will await your viewpoint……..

The 90’s pattern out of embroidered denim sounds awesome! This skirt is really big! FYI I usually cut a 12 or 14 in mccalls and ended up cutting a 6 so double check the measurements before you start sewing particularly the waist it measures 46”!on the size 6 😱 what fabric are you using? I used taffeta (which was a recommended fabric) and it’s really pouf-y starting over today 🙄

Oh, yes, I need those Kai pinking shears! (I sometimes pink the edges of fusibles) Gini, have you used a pinking blade in a rotary cutter? This was terrific---comparison of techniques was helpful. I've been wanting to use raw edge finishes but didn't want the garment to look like a mistake! THX!!

Looking soooo cute!! My version isn't as cute as yours...or, it could just be that you're way cooler than I am!!! TBF, I don't super like the colour of mine, so maybe that's my problem. Cute pants too, btw. Did you make those also? Are they the ones you put darts on the knees?

Yes those are the pants with the darts in the knees I haven’t worn them for a bit due to the outrageously hot weather but I think I’m going to need another pair. I’m sure your tunic is every bit as cute as mine Faith your stuff always looks great!
