After all, technology in games advanced so rapidly between the late 90s and 2004. But gaming tech has remained much more stagnant than I ever could have predicted. ive been playing control everyday because of your video for the past week now and i gotta say, you had some good points in the video (like the drink dispenser, that was disappointing), but to really experience the physics in a good way, go to the cafeteria near dead letters. there, they got a whole room filled with destructible chairs and tables with stuff on them. a huge tree monument time thingie in the middle that can be smashed to pieces. propane carts and fire extinguishers to blow shit up with. an office on top of the kitchen with a lot of glass panes and wooden desks to break and shatter to pieces. also pro tip. when you get the dash ability right before you fix the power plant, you can dash right through glass and tables and break then instantly. and with long desks, you can dash right through them, leaving a nice slice through the table.

If more game developers would start focusing on their physics engines instead of graphics, I believe we would begin to see leaps in gaming technology again. Unfortunately, most developers prefer prerendered animations to the real deal. Notice the advance in graphics technology and then realize how roughly nothing has happened to physics since Half-Life 2 (with exceptions like GTA4). In a modern shooter, when you shoot an enemy they ragdoll just like in Half-Life 2. If a game got released with Half-Life 2’s graphics today there would be an outrage, but no one seems to care about physics. Also graphics seems to have been exhausted of its potential with current technology; physics on the other hand has not.

The ray tracing is beautiful, but the game has a lot of temporal ghosting and blurring. And unfortunately this is especially true of ray tracing effects. The worst offender is their GI option, as it absolutely tanks your framerate for minimal benefits and makes the whole game a ghostly mess. I like the other ray tracing effects, they may be some of the best that have been made yet, but unfortunately they hit performance pretty hard too. I would like to use DLSS, but not only does it make the ghosting issue much worse but it also seems to introduce a fair bit of noise into the image. I wish they would implement the version of DLSS that Wolfenstein Youngblood uses, because that version is almost flawless. It boosts performance substantially while hardly hurting visuals at all. Overall I think Control looks fantastic, but the post processing leaves a lot to be desired.
