YEARS ago (1990) I owned a Miata. It was Red with a Tan top and Tan Leather interior. It was a Fun daily driver. It’s classified as a commuter car instead of a sports car so your insurance is cheaper. I’m too old and have too much arthritis now to get in and out of. Furthermore it can’t handle the 5-7 feet of snow we get every winter, so it would be a late spring through early fall vehicle for us.

I bought the RF version (hard top) a month ago, and best purchase of my life! The drive experience it provides can't be compared to anything. (for the price) As 192cm (6.3) I can drive it very comfortably, even tho to a friend of mine its a big problem even tho hes only 184cm. If you have long legs, like me, no issue with the place, if you have big torso and short legs, you will have issues fitting it. I considered to buy either the MX-5 / BRZ / Z4 Manual.. After trying them out all, I realized that the MX-5 are the answer!

I very much appreciate the noise test, but I wanted to point out the the dB difference going from 69dB to 76dB is much greater than it would appear since dB's are measured on a logarithmic scale, which means the difference between 76 dB and 69 dB isn't a simple increase of 7 units.

In dB, 69 and 77 is almost 2 and a half times the volume. In other words, a LOT more. I think what matters a lot more than the real noise value, though, is whether it's annoying road and wind noises, droning CVTs, or a nice-sounding engine. 77dB won't get old with good engine sounds, but will get in everyone's hair if it's purely tyre and wind.

I don’t need back seats! I’ve always wanted a real 2 seater coupe, but the Miata is so damn small and light! To drive this car daily in the Midwest isn’t always an option as I got my 3 stuck in a snow drift in -40 degree weather. NOT FUN! I feel like midwesterners that have to worry about snowy drives should have a bigger second car to rough through the snow, then Miata all the rest of the time!!! 😁

What’s your take on Miata vs Mazda3 hatchback for a second car?
@TheFlyrodder684 ай бұрын
I've considered both, and both are excellent driving cars. The Mazda 3 is the more practical car, especially the sedan version. I like the hatchback version. It's so sporty, but the blind spot is for real. You'll appreciate the blindspot monitoring feature there. The MIata is a niche car, and you'll have to accept it for what it is. It is small, has limited cargo space, and doesn't come in AWD, unlike the Mazda 3. It is the more fun car to toss around.
@markcoopers19304 ай бұрын
I have both: 23' Miata (Soft top, GT, manual) and 22' HB turbo. Bought the Mazda3 first, Miata last October. Great combo. Live in the Northeast US and the turbo handles all weather seemingly better than the AWD CR-V'S and rav-4s that I'm constantly blowing past during rain storms and snow. Since late March I've been using the Miata for fun drives and daily tasks whenever it's not raining and whenever the construction companies nearby haven't left a mountain of red dirt on the roads. And every other day the Mazda3 is a great vehicle that I know will just get me and whatever I need to carry wherever I need to go, without fuss, and with a reasonable amount of fun and dynamics. Cons are I only have garage space for the Miata (both cars get to be inside only when the roommate is out of town), and I do have to do a bit of a car shuffle in the driveway to get the Miata out. I've needed to wax the 3 for a while now and only tonight will I have the chance. While I WFH, I'm in a small city and MPG on the turbo is not great. Pro is I can't get below 32mpg average in the Miata even if I'm taking it on spirited drives through the woods (just driving around on the freeways I'm getting high 30's low 40's). I love my turbo and it's more than practical enough for anything I've ever needed (even loaded up with three other adults, plenty of home Depot runs for mulch and seed, even a lawnmower). But if I had known I was going to move to a city, and rent a house with garage space to both work on and store my Miata through the winter I'd maybe have hung into my 2011 Mazda3 sedan (also practical enough) for a few more years despite it starting to feel the corrosive northeast and down on power. Or maybe a slightly used hybrid of some kind. Of course I say this sitting at my desk, but I know if I hated driving my daily I'd be miserable. Unless you're buying a Mazdaspeed3, hacking up and modding a non-speed manual 3, or your first car has NO fun dynamics of any kind it's a bit too practical to be a dedicated fun second car. It works great as a fun, practical, all-around good one car solution, or the practical alt to your fun car (like mine).
