Exactly. You can't expect corporations to make moral decisions. They are organizations with the goal of making money, and you can't expect any more than that. If they believed that they would be making more money by investing more of their profits back into the business and expanding and hiring more people, then they would already be doing that. So when they're given millions of dollars in tax breaks, they just take the money, because there is no benefit for them in putting it towards anything but the bank.

Digressing to those who do take advantage of the safety net... all intelligent realistic people recognize that there is a certain percentage of "shrink" in any business, in any area of human activity. That should go without saying and has almost no bearing on the larger issues and problems that are being dealt with. Those "losses", however, aren't the entire business plan of Liberals, so to speak, it's just a relatively minor problem that's being exaggerated to make you stupid and emotional instead of fact based.... But the criticisms against conservatism are in fact on point and aimed at the massive social, economic and cultural fact based failures of their polices in almost every area. They divide us as a people with their apocalyptic religious type of ideology, they bankrupt funding for the common needs of society from roads to education, they create cynicism by promising their followers things that can never work which leads to distrust in the very process of democracy, etc. They basically cheat their way into power by lying on all fronts, from economics to social, and when their policies backfire they find strange ways to blame Liberals. They obsess about the 60's when there was legitimate reasons for Liberals to push back and protest and equate that with all of their illegitimate reasons to engage in a 24/7 protest against everything that resembles positive human evolution into the future. Just watch FOX, 24/7 of people who operate on the level of rebellious teenagers who don't want to participate in the requirements of growing up. Just look at the lies... dumb war in Iraq, gays will ruin society, tax cuts with enable the noble wealthy to "invest" more, etc. Maybe to them they aren't lying and they are just that uninformed about reality.... heck, Conservatism is just a religion to it's proponents. Any economist will tell you that the middle class is the biggest driving force of the economy. The rich don't spend all of their money so it stagnates, and the poor don't have money to spend in the first place. The people who spend money are in the middle class. If your business has no customers, cutting taxes will not bring customers in your door. Having customers with disposable income is what brings them in the door. The tax system needs to be set up so the poorer you are, the easier it is to rise up - and the richer you are, the harder it is to rise up. That forces nearly everyone into the middle - WHICH IS THE DRIVER OF THE ECONOMY.

California has all of Hollywood movies made there make money from all over the world and bring it back to Hollywood. California also has long beachs and many tourist spots that bring in huge revenue. You need to compare states with similar popular and other variables.

No Zach now you are just continuing with the republican policy of deflecting and demanding new metrics. We have proposed an experiment. Raise taxes on the wealthy. Are there more of them in California? Yes. Are there none in Kansas? No. So then that is our proposed experiment. Raise taxes on the wealthy. It's not a quantitative experiment - in fact if it doesn't work that's a great example for the conservatives to show it won't work everywhere. They are too frightened to try it. They could reverse the tax rates the very next year if they wanted to. These aren't changes of permanence...they are about the easiest things to roll out and the easiest ones to retract. We need to get data for this theory and we NEED the diversity of places like Kansas and Nebraska which may still have proportionately enough wealth based on the major drop in population. There will be tons of data and potential variables exposed from any kind of a result, but we have to try this thing first. Conservatives spend all their time talking about the things that won't work and never dedicate any time or research into the things they say will. And that's when you end up with failed states in a financial quagmire because someone does something as fast and easy as dropping tax rates for the wealthy. Well it's just as simple to do the opposite - and we have evidence that it works - so let's give it a go.

More important to the argument is the surplus has reduced California's debt, California and NewYork both got credit rating increases due to this. Debt to GDP is important but in the US Interest payments will be 1.3% of GDP in 2015, and 3% in 2025. Many economist think National debt is way over emphasized because of this. I think Maher is a jerk sometimes but I like him and he is making a good point here. He should be mean to less people and ramp up his torture of Trump, Trump deserves it.

Unfortunately, facts have no place in any argument a conservative is participating in. They say cutting the military will lead to the demise of the USA at the hand of the enemy - despite the fact that the 10 next biggest armies could team up and still not have as much throw weight as the USA does. They say Obama is raising taxes - despite statistics showing that, on average, he lowered them. They say immigrants are a major problem - despite the fact that it is often not the immigrants that prove troublesome, but the black population that is so often discriminated against and lashes out by becoming the criminals society believes them to be. They say Socialism is the devil - but somehow, everybody who isn't part of the 1 % absolutely loves every part of socialism they have access to. I can summarize all the GOP rebuttal to this video: 1. California has Hollywood and Silicon Valley. That's why are they are doing well. Well, California had Hollywood and Silicon Valley under Republican governor too. And it is unquestionable that how much better California is now compared to the time when Jerry Brown came to office. 2. You can't compare California to Kansas because it is a bigger state. California is well ahead of most red states in PER CAPITA income too. In fact, 9 out of 10 poorest state per capita voted for Romney in 2012. 3. But California is expensive to live in. Rich economy causes higher cost of living. Somalia is cheaper than America. Cheaper does not mean better. 4. What about Detroit? First of all, Detroit is a city not a state and Detroit municipality has a little to no control over it's economy. Plus Detroit had Democratic mayor since 1974 and it was doing very well until major corporation decided to move to developing countries. So, it is obvious that it is the trade deals, not Democrats are to blame.

Alaska has a higher per capita income because of the harshness of the working conditions there, and the shortage of labor that causes, and because of their Socialized Oil payment system. That is why it is the only red state in the ranking of the 10 richest states. There are no Blue States in the ranking of the 10 poorest states.

I live in the Bay Area. There is a homelessness epidemic and lots of other dysfunction that is quite rampant. Not to mention, the state is $443 billion in debt. The only reason that it's doing well at all is because most of the movie industry is located in the state as well as a lot of rich tech companies (they come really just for the weather). In other words, California does as well as it does in spite of deleterious government policy, not because of it.

There is difference between debt and deficit. As long as California has budget surplus the debt won't be a problem. And total value of the movie industry in the US is $10 billion (www.the-numbers.com/market/) and California's GDP is around $2 trillion. It's not even 1% of California's GDP. And let's assume California is doing well for it's weather as you mentioned in your comment, but then how do you explain that 9 out of 10 poorest states voted for Romney last election and 9 out of 10 richest states voted for Obama. We had GOP governors and GOP legislatures, we were closing libraries, schools, and fire stations. The state was absorbing so much money local government had nothing left to work with. Austerity was the tone of the day. It has turned around. Kansas is a great contrast. Now Republicans don't admit it, but Kansas has implemented their policies and those policies, as they did in California, have failed. I was just in Louisiana stepping over homeless to walk down the street.

Debt and deficit are different things. 443 billion debt, but paying it off steadily with budget surplus while the economy grows. Kansas may only have 39 billion debt, but it's currently just adding more to the debt with anemic economic growth.

I explain simply for you in this example. I'm a lawyer who makes 120,000 a year, but have student loan (high) debt of 500,000. I make money to pay it off, it will take some time. Where as I now have a 25,000 (low) debt for student loans, but I'm homeless and have no job. Maybe not the best example, but it good enough.

Very little of that had to do with legislation, Bill. Our state is boom/bust. You can point to Arnold and say how bad things were when he left but tech took off after the financial crisis and our coffers have been filled with tech money. Remember the guy Arnold replaced--Gray Davis? Things sucked under him. He was a Democrat. Reality is that the tech bubble burst and things got bad. Eventually, we'll have another bubble burst and we'll be right back into a super deficit...and then we'll come out of it...and then back in another...that's the way things go here.

Oil, without oil Texas would be in a massive deficit and economy would suck. Oil and oil related industries is how Texas stayed afloat all these years, however Republican policies prevented Texas to contribute any tax dollars to the federal coffer. Texas economy is only booming selfishly. California is booming and subsidizing red states at the same time through taxes. If Kansas had as much oil related industry as Texas, even Republican policies can't ruin it.
