Thanks for this episode. I need to try the Red Fox stuff. I used Kit’s World instrument panels set on 1/32 B-25 kit and I was a little bit disappointed by those.

These look really nice! I've use Eduard PE and Space sets, and Quinta. All these sets have different handling characteristics, and I've found that the decal ones can get a bit blurry when put in water, so I look forward to trying the resin sets. The other thing about instrument panels is that they are hard, flat surfaces, so a hard, flat part is always going to look more 'right' to me. Don't care if people think it's cheating! I'm not going to ruin my eyesight painting tiny dials!

I place the decal paper of moist kitchen paper, it doesn't affect the parts that way.

Thanks, Jamie! I remember when Mike Grant's smoke ring decals were declared the death of the hobby. Like you, I don't consider such highly-detailed aftermarket parts to be a crutch. They're just an alternative to picking out details in the old school manner. For me, the decision to go OOB or build something festooned with aftermarket really boils down to what techniques reflect my mood and goals for the model.

I have tried the Quinta set in my 1/48 Tamiya Corsair F4U1-A and was very impressed with the result . My only other experience was with a Kitworld set that weren’t so good and ended up absorbing too much water and were soggy and distorted. As soon as I have watched this video, I’m getting to work on my 2nd F4U the 1/48 Corsair birdcage using the Red Fox set, looking forward to comparing……..although I suspect I will prefer not having to faff about with water !

Personally I really enjoyed the aspect these bring to the average modeller. even a hamfisted git like me can be helped massively. and youre not pissing about with bits of photoetch smaller than my fingers can usefully manipulate. winning.

I'm very curious about how they manage to do this. Is there a special printer?

I must agree with C. I have used Red Fox sets and I’m afraid I am not a big fan. Quinta studio sets are the ones for me. Yes they maybe a little bit more expensive but they are better quality.

I'm sorry, but I think that the Quinta sets have crisper detail and don't have that pixelated dot matrix effect that the RFS sets do when you look at them up close.
@thescalemodellingcafe Жыл бұрын
It looks pixillated on camera, but not in real life, to me at least. And I still think Red Fox is superior, but then it's good to have differing opinions sometimes, keeps things interesting

I don't think it's cheating. I've used Quinta but t'm not convinced they are needed on newer tooled kits. At least by skilled modelers. They aren't cheap but they are much much better than PE though. Oh, and leave the canopy open if you want to see the difference they make.
@thescalemodellingcafe Жыл бұрын
The detail in new kits is great but its impossible to get the same effect with paint and decals.

Just like extra thin glue was a game changer, I think these are just as a leap forward. Only problem is they cost a lot like everything else these days.
@thescalemodellingcafe Жыл бұрын
Tamiya Extra Thin is just a 50/50 mix of Acetone and Butyl Acetate. I make my own, it's so much cheaper!

Regarding the differences between the two types of product and the downsides of each. Consider that we are only in the beginning phase of this technology for modeling and in time I suspect that what works will stick and what doesn't will be replaced with an improvement. As for removing the gray areas around the black panels, could this be done carefully using sanding sticks (probably wood backed rather than sponge backed) instead of cutting them with a saw. I'm personally thankful that these aftermarket products are available as I can build better models than I could ever hope to do by hand.
@thescalemodellingcafe Жыл бұрын
Sanding sticks would work too, I think a file may be even better to keep things straighter.
