NO!!! e90 blinkers are perfection and it makes me to sad that they changed it :( :( Yes it's a bit weird the first couple of times but within a week you get used to it and start seeing the advantages. You don't get the annoying mechanical clicking that takes place when you turn the wheel (the part that cancels it automatically after), it's just silent and smooth as if it was off. And it cancels out the hazard lights and vise versa, so when you turn them off the blinker doesn't keep going (if it was on beforehand) after. The haptics on them is amazing and going back to clicky ones feels like a huge step backwards to appease masses :( And you don't have to hold them anywhere like it says in the video, you simply push them up/down all the way to put it on fully, but if you move it slightly then it just puts it on for 3 flashes. The same way with window switches where pushing it all the way will make it go all the way down by itself but pushing with only slight pressure it only goes down while you hold it.

It's funny how similar this comparison of BMW 335i vs STI is to my feelings about my current Audi S4 vs my previous Mazdaspeed3. I had a 2012 Mazdaspeed3 that I modified (roughly 300 WHP, 350 WTQ, great suspension setup, brakes, wheels, etc). Yeah, it was fast, but it was so uncomfortable on long drives, loud, and felt somewhat cheap. Then I bought a 2011 Audi S4. It's a totally different experience. The S4 feels just as fast, with a much smoother powerband with a huge torque curve, but when you're just driving down the road, or on the highway, its so quiet, so comfy. With a simple tune, I can go from "Similar to my tuned MazdaSpeed3's power" to "These aren't even comparable anymore" and I won't lose any civility when i'm driving on the highway or around town. Sometimes, it's just not worth getting the hopped-up, over-extended, over-powered tuner car, and just get a car like the BMW 335i or Audi S4, because the amount of money you're spending at the end of the day is very similar, but with totally different experiences.

I imagine that weird throttle is due to the ECU tune. Probably a selling point, that punch in the back power delivery when you feed the throttle past half way would be impressive to some people. Like the stupid oversaturated color presets on TVs.
@Jimgersnap7 жыл бұрын
I have an '09 535i xDrive (uses the same 300hp twin-turbo inline-6 this E92 uses) without the ECU tune and it has the same feeling when pushing the throttle. Once you switch to sport mode you get all of the power all of the time. I've always just assumed it was so it would appeal to those who want the power, but when they call for it without having to pop it over into sport with shiftable-auto.
@Tun1NGManiac7 жыл бұрын
To a certain degree modern Audis and Mercs throttles feel the same way. Probably the last car that didn't feel like this was the e46 despite the throttle being fly by wire. The tune only makes it even more noticeable.
@nightarrow74737 жыл бұрын
they make the throttle respond like that in only eco and comfort modes switch those cars to sport and you will see how direct the pedal is. for example, my 2009 Audi A4 in normal mode makes me wanna kill myself it has SOOO MUCH pedal travel to give so little power even at full throttle it is not giving you 100% power, however pop it into Sport mode and the lightest touch to the throttle will give you so much power.

Well, punch in the back torque is fun, nothing wrong with that. That's coming from the flashback that the turbo lag of my 80's Saab made it more of a thrill than my quantifiably faster Focus ST that eventually replaced it. A friend of mine had one of these e92s, but in manual, the factory tune seemed to have a pretty linear/civilized torque curve from what I recall.

I've come to comment in this old video and add another to the 1,584 comments to say.... In your video about a BMW, you've managed to perfectly capture the essence of the Subaru STi. Over 10 years ago I had a 2004 model that I used as intended... SCCA autocross twice a month, run at the drag strip every so often, even did track days as I could afford them. But the highway ride...... you nailed it. I took mine on road trips and after a few hours your eyes adjust to the awful micro-bouncy ride and trick your brain into visually believing it's smooth, then you get out of the car on solid ground and visually everything around has this vibration. It's like getting off a merry-go-round where everything continues to spin for a few moments, but instead it's like your head was dealing with riding a paint shaker for hundreds of miles. Then there's the general attitude of the car, which "SMASH" more or less captures. Want to go easy and cruise? FUCK YOU, SISSY, ONWARD AND SIDEWAYS!!! ....as it punches you in the taint until you feed it an apex, Richard Burns style. But when you do channel your inner Colin McRae, holy hell is it the most amazing car on the planet. Once you figure out the car's single amazing trick, it's so easy to control you use every possible opportunity you can to drift through every bend in the road, to include clear intersections. The trick is simple, when it's time to accelerate you just put your foot on the floor and use the steering wheel to point the car in the direction you want it to go. No subtlety to this car, no fine skills required, all you need is a maniacal dedication to "SMASH." I've yet to drive a car that was so brutal and so entertaining and mind-bendingly awesome in how it does what it does, nor have I ever driven a car that was so painful to deal with in every other way.

The E92 does have a system for its turn signals. A quick tap down and the signal will blink 3 times and turn off, for quick lane changes, etc. A click down (which requires slightly more effort) will hold the signal on until you straighten the wheel. (you can also change the settings in your cars menu) Secondly if you knew where to look for the power in the rev range you could downshift before you need to accelerate and it would work much better. - The one BMW driver who signals

Never had the throttle problem with any of the n54 or n55s, I've driven. The detents or tactile feel of the turn signal is definitely there - the first stop is a 3x flash (customizable to 1x), the second stop is a "turn signal until you complete your turn" standard turn.

if your thinking about tuning your 335, keep in mind that you WILL have to replace your spark plugs every 15k miles.
@mdcohen7 жыл бұрын
and carbon blast every 30k, and change the coil packs and prepare for new high pressure fuel pumps and the clutch may go sooner with 100 lbs ft more torque than stock. All together its not a terrible price to pay for getting relatively cheap power in pretty luxurious package but you've got to do your homework and either wrench or have a good indy shop.

Mr Regular, get a hold of a 330d! It will be a unique experience for you. It still is a BMW, but quite different, overloaded with torque! Even if it doesn't have many horses, you'll love the pull. Here in Eastern Europe 80% of BMW, Audis, Mercedes are diesels, quite a few get remapped. For example a 135kw (180hp) e46 330d can get a safe 180kw (240hp) from just a remap.

I owned an E91 for four years, great car. However mine was a 2007 with the Steptronic transmission which I hated. I wanted a 6MT but there's a price premium due to rarity, and I'd found a really nice local car so I figured I'd try it. Loved everything but that transmission - jerky, with hesitation like crazy and this was quite common. Glad they've improved since then.

I have an 07 e91 xi Love the engine / seats / brakes / cabin etc but the auto trans (6L45 made by GM) is complete trash. I pulled it, completely rebuilt it, and it still sucks. I completely agree that transmission aside it’s great… but it’s so heavily hampered by the auto trans. It is absolutely exceptional in snow.

That throttle feel is like 90% of why I sold my 335. Also, it sounds like the turn stalk was broken. There should absolutely be a satisfying click when you pass the detente. You're supposed to be able to push up to it for the 3 flash lane change and past it to turn it on until you corner.

I had a 2009, 335 xi coupe with a Stage II DINAN ECU FLASH. That car was FAST. I only drove it in manual (using the shifter to shift) I never used the stupid flipper things on the steering wheel and never drove it in “automatic” mode. I absolutely LOVED this car! The turbos sounded lovely . They were not obnoxious but emitted just the right sound. I got it up to 140 with only a very slight shaking ( but also probably due to the roads and freeways being shit in California) Just a side note : I’m laughing so hard at you bagging in the Subarus! I live in Southern Oregon where I call it the “blue collar” sportscar . Basically it’s for people that can’t initially afford to buy a European car. The WRX and Honda Civic SI have got to be the only two cars that people between the ages of 16-25 own around here . If not one of those , they own a truck . Even the girls around here think they are so bad ass. I laugh when one of them pulls up next to my Mercedes CLK430 (V8) with that stupid sounding engine and I end up blowing them away everytime top end. Some of the more modded ones will get me off the line , but when I’m in sports mode they don’t even stand a chance. European cars are also the best handling STOCK cars. HANDS DOWN. My BMW could take a turn going 65 miles per hour eith what felt like all 4 wheels still on the ground! (Love AWD as well. I wish my Mercedes had that)

These cars certainly have their quirks. Some of them have been fixed with the new F-generation of cars, though some--such as quirky (albeit changed) turn signals--persist. I very much agree with your comparison to a Subaru and the costs associated with modding such a car. I recently considered going the modded Subaru route myself but ended up choosing a stock BMW 230i manual, and I am very happy with my decision.

the turn signals on the e90/92 is not that hard to figure out. you hit it all the way up, you make the turn, and it goes off when the steering wheel straightens out
@Shabaz777 жыл бұрын
Yes, the pedal was tuned oddly, as if BMW was worried about old folks mistaking the gas for the brake, and plowing into the 7 Eleven in Hollywood, Florida…But the low tech solution for the pedal travel issue, is to move your seat up when you need to move, then your foot has less flexing to do…It really helps, even if it's not comfortable to leave the seat there most of the time..But notice most race cars, are way closer to the pedals than most road cars..

I definitely want a 335i. Not because of the badge, but because it's a very rare kind of vehicle. It's a driver focused, very fast, yet economical (doing maintenance and repairs yourself) car with RWD or rear biased AWD. It has a usable back seat and kinda big boot and still manages to be great fun to drive. I've looked into 350Z, BRZ, WRX and even some 911's but none of them have all the practical aspects that I need at the same time as being very fun to drive. This is a great car for all of us enthusiasts that can only have one car to do it all.
