Maybe religion is the desire to commune with the devine. I think Oliver Wendell Holmes said something to the effect that at the core of every religion is humility. The question of cults...here in Utah we have actual cults. (When I worked at Toys R Us, I was accused of getting waaaaay to excited to see the polygamists when they came in the store.) It seems like cults have a religious element to them, but they're smaller and also have a big element of control.

I do like to old testament, mandukya upanishad texts and Sufi/Kashmir Shaivism stuff is really really interesting. A lot of interesting wisdom that describes inner consciousness. Christianity becomes much clearer once you understand what Sufism or Kashmir Shaivism is about. Also CG Jung stuff about religion is worth of reading. Basically, religion is about society modeling, understanding inner consciousness and making money out of idiots who don't get what is this all about.

The irony of Reza Aslan accusing others of "Disneyfying" religion. 01:30:00 - (Christmas, Easter, When was Jesus born?) - As Aslan says, Christmas was the Saturnalia - which the Church couldn't get the people to stop celebrating - so they co-opted it with some re-branding. The date relates to Sun worship. From the summer solstice the Sun drops a little lower in the sky until Dec 21st - at this point it seems to stall (die) to the naked eye, before beginning to ascend (rise again) after three days, on the 25th . There are also similarities between Dionysus wine rituals and the Eucharist - the text of Luke having multiple similarities with earlier writings on the god of wine. Going by the story, Jesus would have most likely been born in the Spring - when the Shepherds were staying out with their herds to tend them during calving and shearing. But the year is problematic. (I may juxtapose the Gospels) Matthew says Jesus was born during the reign of (the historical) Herod - who died in 4BC (so any time up to then) While Luke says he was born during the census of Quirinius (a historical Roman Senator and governor of Syria) which could not have happened before 6AD - at least a decade that cannot be rectified. And, of course, it is asinine to suggest a census actually required everyone to drop what they were doing and return to their 'home town' - imagine what they would do to commerce and society today - or any time in history? It is also worth noting the two Gospels give different genealogies for Jesus that disagree on several points - they can't even agree on who his grandpa was. Also, if I'm not mistaken, the town of Nazareth didn't exist until long after Jesus died - in his time it was a region - and a religious sect (Samson was a Nazarene) ... And it seems absurd to me that Rome (Pax Romana) would allow a client king to slaughter thousands of children on a whim. - - Easter is a Saxon fertility festival for the Goddess Oestra. One year Spring (Oestra) came late and she found a bird who's wings were broken from being frozen to the ground. Oestra felt sorry for the bird because it could no longer fly, so she turned it into a fast running rabbit named Lepus that she took for a pet (some say lover) Because of her guilt for depriving him (Lepus was a male) of being a bird and able to fly, she decreed that once a year he could lay eggs all the colors of the rainbow - And today we have Easter and the Bunny still together.

5* Podcast: Having been fortunate enough to see Jim live in London in 2009 I have enjoyed his comedy for a while. Seeing Jim evolve so well with the changing times has been a pleasure to behold. This podcast not only has a fantastic concept, but the combination of Forrest, Kelly and Jack works really well and their comedic synergy is endlessly entertaining. Their obvious friendship really adds to the chemistry. Legit and TJJS were axed just as they were starting to get into their stride. Would love to see some of the other members of the team on screen in future projects, as just thinking about Forest interact with Justin Barrett still makes me laugh, Kelly is extremely funny, and Jack... well he is definitely improving. So Jesus was a Tecton? Did odd jobs that may have involved some carpentry, his profession was more like the day laborers that hang out at Home Depot? Sounds like he pronounced his name “HeyZeus”. 😁

Great open conversation. A bit irreverent at times, but I knew what I signed up for. I'm so surprised he didn't mention the Baha'i Faith in response to the question about the next religion. Rainn Wilson is Baha'i and so am I. We believe similarly to his explanation that there is only one religion that each prophet reforms - in their mission, they are not bringing a new religion.

Didn't anyone think to ask the three wise men when Jesus was born? They supposedly knew this kid was going to be special; surely they made a note of his birthday. Kind of makes the whole story even fishier than the the way they told it.

What three wise men? The story doesn't even say three.

@@unicyclist97 You're correct, the bible doesn't specify a number, but that didn't stop "three wise men" from becoming a common christian trope and it doesn't undermine my point either: it only takes one to make a note of the date.

Reza is mostly right. He does make some leaps of faith to assume that Jesus had a famous brother called James, though.
