It had to have been the grooming. At first, she thought he was fat. He probably had a decent sense of humor, so she enjoyed his company when he took her on errands. He bought her things that would have been out of reach for a teenage romance, so he became attractive to her. I totally understand it. But what in all that made you a horrible 16 year old? 🤣

I lived in Baldwin and my family knew the Buttafuocos well. My car was totaled and in their shop just before all this went down. When I met my mother-in-law, she told me she taught art at the Merrick middle school Amy attended and Amy was in her class. She described Amy as, “a sweet girl with no motivation and lacking a sense of self.” The Buttofuocos were a lovely family, I didn’t know Mary Jo but I knew Joey’s brother and father, the latter died from all the aggravation from this ordeal. The Joey I knew was a very funny and caring person. He truly cared about his customers. BTW he got a relatively cushy stay when he was in jail!

Baldwin, NY!!! Woohooooo, my hometown gets mentioned by Dr. Grande. I was a pre-teen when this happened and I vividly recall the mechanic shop having a huge "Welcome back, Joe" banner strewn on it when Joey got out of prison. I had seen Amy in passing a year or so before this all happened. She wasn't anybody at the time, so she was just a random person walking down my block and saying "hi" occasionally as a bunch of us kids played in the front yard. That's my claim to fame in this case, haha.

Grooming When a sexual or other kind of predator sets the stage for abusing another, such as a child or other person (as in the case of sex and theory human trafficking). Trust: May give toys and/or other gifts and favors to the intended victim to gain trust. Alienation: Settings the stage for the intended victim to become alienated from their primary caregivers/circles or family and community. Fear/dependency: Sets up a power dynamic in which the victim feels too afraid to report the abuse, perhaps by involving the victim in activities their friends and family might judge the victim negatively for, such as drug use (or even the abuse itself).

I'm in UK and we certainly knew all about it here. No social media, but the tabloids were happy to tell us all about it. I also saw the movies and I saw the Buttafuocos on the Geraldo talk show. She was portrayed as a nasty little seductress. In those days people didn't really think about why she would be behaving in such a way. Was she damaged as a child? Was she groomed by a paedophile? No. She was just bad. She's not completely blame free in my eyes. She was 16 not 9, but it's nowhere near as simple as she was the evil little bitch who led a grown 35 yr old man astray. She shot a woman in the head 🤷🏻‍♀️.

seems to me that the whole case was handled poorly. They both got a slap on the wrist,, and Amy got a lucrative career out of the whole exchange, which is a huge slap in the face to the victim. Joey was the adult, and it was his responsibility to send Amy packing. he created the situation that resulted in the shooting, but legally it was impossible to convict him. on a different level we saw this happen with Zimmerman and Rittenhouse.

@@abbeys8905 She was obviously abused, and our culture at the time enabled her bad behavior by granting her fame. But she was young enough to be rehabilitated. She was a child! Yet No one thought she might need professional help? Speaking from experience, Gen-X was the most neglected generation ever! This is how the boomer generation treated their Gen X children. A gross boomer (Buttafuoco) commits statutory rape, and the 16 year old child he raped is treated as entertainment fodder for grown-ass adults.

Poor Mary Jo, her life was destroyed by two self centered and manipulative people. Even though she rebuilt herself, the emotional and physical damage she had to endure was immeasurable. It’s very sad to realize that years of love, dedication, and investment in a marriage will one day end up with being shot in this brutal manner by the husband’s mistress. Mary Jo did not deserve the betrayal from Joey and the cruelty from Amy. Thank you for the review Dr. Grande!❤️ On a side note- this shirt is glorious!🧡🖤🤍

What was utterly sensationalized back then about Amy Fisher was her being some wild child but to me the sleazy behavior of Joey Buttofuco was the story. He could have taken the high road and not gotten involved and, in fact, acted the role of responsible adult but he did not. Still, Amy was always the worst person ever. She was totally wrong and deserved her prison sentence but in his own way Joey was just as bad.

It’s very different hearing this story now as a mother, especially since I happen to have a 16 year old son so I know how really, well, dumb they can be. Like he’s really smart but will turn around and baffle me with things he says that show he completely does not understand how the world works. How beautiful of MaryJo to be able to forgive her. I wonder if some of the reason is that she saw she was in the end still a child when this happened. Albeit a child who did something horrific that was intended to be deadly…
