I am Filipino but it is kind of annoying when most tourism materials just put "Bali" instead of the country "Indonesia" as a popular tourist destination in Asia. It gives many foreigners the idea that Bali is a country and Indonesia is a fictional place. 😑

Indonesian actually adopted 1/5 of its vocabulary from Dutch, words like kantor/kantoor (office), kulkas/koelkast (refrigerator), traktir/trakteer (treat), gratis/gratis (free), bengkel/winkel (car repair shop), permisi/permissie (excuse me), oma/oma (grandma), opa/opa (grandpa), om/oom (uncle), tante/tante (aunt), dah/daag (bye, taken from goed daag which means good day), apotik/apotheek (pharmacy), praktek/praktheek (apply), wortel/wortel (carrots), prestasi/prestatie (achievement), egois/egoist (selfish), arsitektur/architectuur (architecture), mobil/automobiel (car), insinyur/ingenieur (engineer), teknologi/technologie (technology), helm/helm (helmet), gubernur/gouvernour (governor), halo/halo (hi), brangkas/brandkast (safe), telat/te laat (late, in Dutch it means too late), kado/cadeau (present), plafon/plafoon (ceiling), korslet/korsluitting (short circuit), retsleting/ritsluitting (zipper) and many2 more. Also, some Indonesian cuisines like risol, semur (smoor in Dutch), klappertaart, perkedel (frikadel in Dutch), meises (muisjes in Dutch, meaning bread with sprinkles of chocolate) and pannenkoek were influenced by the Dutch. Words in Indonesian that are similar to English were taken from the Dutch.

@@ImperialStreak I will be uploading a video about Dutch loanwords in Indonesian very soon! I tried to film the loanwords I could find in Indonesia and than look for the original words in the Netherlands. One correction: in Dutch it's "praktijk" with an "ij". What's called 'meises' in Indonesian is actually 'hagelslag' in Dutch. 'Muisjes' in Dutch are smaller white sprinkles made from aniseed and are eaten at someone's birth, either having the color blue (boy) or pink (girl).
@ImperialStreak
@ImperialStreak 4 жыл бұрын
ky kale that’s interesting, can’t wait to watch ur video. Well it’s kinda funny that Bahasa Indonesia tends to adopt words from Dutch and kinda modify the meaning of the words. Like bensin for example which means petrol, in Dutch benzeen denotes the chemical compound benzene. Also, the word traktir Indonesia means treating u something, as in a birthday or buying u smth for example but in Dutch, trakteer can also mean treating someone good or treating someone terribly aside from buying n giving him/her smth.

As an Indonesian who has lived his whole live in the Netherlands this is such as well made video! I'm planning to upload a similar video on the history of Kota Tua. For those wondering why Dutch isn't spoken in Indonesia? 1) Dutch education to Indonesians was very low 2) the Malay language, native to Sumatra, was already used as a lingua franca way before the Dutch and Portuguese came, and the Dutch didn't bother to educate Dutch as a language.

@wienzard93

not only they never use Dutch or Portuguese's language, the government kind of forbid it for the "peasants" to learn it. my late grandma who was born in 1925 told me only the privileged learned Dutch. Also since the Dutch was in our country for so long, the people hated Dutch so much and eager to get rid of their traces. my grandma used to tell me stories and she really really hate the Dutch.

@@atengku9660 well, Indonesian language is originated from Malay language. But we're different. The thing is if someone only understands Indonesian language, he/she can mostly understand Malay. It's because in the colonialism era, the Dutch don't let commoners get education. Only the local sultans and local dukes and some really wealthy commoners whom they allowed to go to school. Among them, the men could go up to high school here and continue to university in Netherland; while women could only go up to elementary.
