I raised a pigeon called Paloma. She lived with me, my cat and my dog for 14 years, I cried many tears when she died during the pandemic because the vet would not see her as she was considered less important than regular pets. Heartbreaking.

thought she'd "return to the wild"? Too many people don't realize that pigeons are ABANDONED PETS. The reason there's so many worldwide is because people bred them to be trained and used to keep them for all sorts of reasons, like racing and for message services. Sadly as technology advanced, sending messages by pigeon was no longer a thing and they just got forgotten. Just like cats and dogs on the streets. They were bred to live with us, which is why they stay in cities and towns.

If you go to the same place,each day, twice a week, once a week and lay some seed down, you'll be guaranteed a bunch of bird friends in no time. I go to the park, its a small walled garden around 4 tennis courts in size. I go there with seeds, monkey nuts and peanuts. I feed a gang of pigeons, wood pigeons, squirrels, blue jays. ravens, crows and magpies with my offerings. Its almost like a Disney film when they all come and greet me.

Many people hate the noises they make not knowing that they're doing those noises mostly when they're "hungry."

People tend to forget that for hundreds of years, pigeon were literally a mode of communication. They had to be smart.

Listen, once that pigeon is trained to your window no matter where you take her within 10 - 20 miles ( or even more ) she'll be back at your balcony before you. I know this because i flew Canadian High Flyers ( a breed of homing pigeons ) for over 10 yrs as a teenager. So this was my routine, i would take from 20 to 30 of my best pigeons, in a carrier from the Lower East Side , onto hte ferry intl Staten Island and let them go. Or i would take them to Central Park, or the Bronx, many different place and let them go, by the time i got back to my loft on the roof, they would be there waiting for me. Great hobby, i truly miss it. Enjoy your Pigeon, they are very special creatures.

The crazy thing about pigeons is they are domestic animals. As in, they are not wild animals. They were introduced into cities by people and became feral (like dogs and cats) & used to be such a big part of society for meat, eggs, compansionship, and mail. We think of them as pests today but they were domesticated by humans thousands of years ago and only fell out of favor in recent history!!

Sure, some level of 'imprinting' is probably involved, but despite that, once they're accustomed to flying freely outside and encouraged to leave, they pretty much always fly away sooner or later. And I'm referring to those raised from a very early age, which wasn’t even the case here. There's clearly a rare and unique bond at play in this instance.

Well a house pigeon can live up to 30 years. Only between 5 to 6 for the town pigeon. So if all goes they will get old with that pigeon 😊
