Got tired of waiting for a warranty response for my very noisy CPAP, so I disassembled my ResMed AirSense 10, blew the foreign particles out of the motor, reassembled the unit and now enjoy quiet nights of sleep. This video is only of the reassembly. Enjoy!

I had a whining noise that seemed to vary when my mask was twisted, reducing airflow. I tried taking off the hose, reservoir and filter and holding a vacuum cleaner up to each hole and for now the problem is solved! Thanks for the advice!

My Airsense 10 started developed the whining noise at 6:15 this morning. I buried my head in the pillow until it was time to get up. My machine is a few years old and the screen reminds me every night that the motor has passed it's life. I thought, well I guess this is it! Over breakfast I found your video. Luckily I have a new AS10 that I use in the RV and when traveling. Swapping it out I looked at the air filter. I must say that I thought I had changed it recently, but by its appearance, I hadn't. (time to put calendar alerts on my phone!) With nothing to loose and thinking there has to be a lot of dirt in there, I opened up the filter and placed the vacuum over the intake port. There was a "whoosh" and something was sucked out. Thought to myself, well either that did it or that did it in. Plugged it in, hooked up may mask and it purred like the new one. Time will tell if this did the trick. I certainly would not have done it if I didn't have the new one in the RV. Moral of the story, change the filter regularly! (for which I had to order on Amazon).

Thank you so much to for taking the time to make this video. I had the same "whirring" sound when inhaling and/or holding my breath. I took apart the machine easily and your video was unbelievably helpful. It's thanks to content producers like you that consumers of content like me are able to fix things themselves and save $800 instead of buying a new machine!!!! I have a Resmed Autosense 10 so it's an APAP (I can set a range instead of just one pressure setting) and the only thing I'll add is that on my model the 4 screws that held the heating element plate were shorter than all the other screws. Not a big deal but not all the screws were the same in my case. Thank you again sir and I subbed to you as a thank you, which is the least that I can do.

The noise is also a bad seal,on the two sensors that are detecting the pressure on top of the unit. When you take the case apart. Receding or repairing and replacing those two seals make a big difference on how the noise of the motor. Machine is detecting a vibrating leak and is causing the motor to speed up and slow down very fast causing a wine.

Well, my CPAP started with the nose again, and knowing what worked last time ... instead of disassembling, I simply unplugged it, removed the air filter and the water reservoir, and vacuumed first from the filter port for 5 seconds, and then from the port on the reservoir side, again for 5 seconds. My CPAP operates silent as when new.

So I blew out with dust spray compressed air the motor and cleaned my machine thoroughly. Put it all back together and that annoying whistle remains when I breathe into my machine. So it must be the motor whining because it's getting old and ready to die. Right?

Thanks for posting, it’s nice to have a reference while fixing things. My machine is over 7 years old, so I wasn’t too surprised to see build up of dust and dead microbes. I did do a couple of additional cleaning steps. I used some gum brushes and a small pick to clean each blade after using my Dyson V8 vacuum (with no attachment it fits nicely to the motor). Second, I used rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) to rinse the motor. I used about 1/4oz, just to get everything rinsed out. I then poured out the alcohol and vacuumed out the motor for 2 minutes to dry. Put everything back together and good for now.

I paid The CPAP Shop -online-for the replacement RESMED CPAP machine - then I had to return it because it started making that problematic wheezing mechanical sound and RESMED then replaced it. From my experience I believe an accumulation of dust and debris on the blower fan causes the fan blade out of balance. The fan blade at the spindle then rubs on the housing creating a plastic on plastic whine. Unfortunately the motor is sealed in the housing, so the only recourse is to try to vacuum out the dust and debris from the fan blade to alleviate the fan balance issue. I would bet the whining sound probably changes pitch according to how out of balance and speed of the fan blade. The only way to know for sure is to cut the casing around the motor, pull the fan blade off, and look for scoring marks underneath. I’m hoping my really good cleaning of the fan blades and solvent bath of isopropyl alcohol continues to cure the issue. Someday the motor will fail, and a new machine/motor will be needed.

I'm a retired biomedical technician who worked on critical medical devices for decades. Nobody will sell you replacement parts unless you have a licensed shop. I have had 2 previous motors go out in the last 20 years and always considered this a bearing failure. The noise from my Airsense with 5,400 hours started last night, tried using my vaccum cleaner to pass air hard through the device. The test afterwards gave the loudest motor noise ever while it was ramping up, then it quieted down completely. Not convinced noise won't return tonight. If you do not have lots of experience opening up and closing electronics without ruining them, don't try it. I also needed an ultrasonic humidifier at times and learned that the mineral dust it spews can clog an air filter in a couple days. I found evidence the powder was leaking past my filter.

It is not very hard at all and requires minimal brain power. Just don't force anything and everything comes apart rather easily.
