A big reason Microsoft owns Mojang is because of the 2014 EULA changes that cracked down on P2W servers. Server owners lied about the content of the new EULA and sent hordes of players to harass developers and throw a massive fit over nothing, with much of it being targeted towards Notch, who wasn't even working on the game anymore, leading to kind of a mental breakdown that ended with him selling the studio in the heat of the moment. I think one of the main factors of how toxic the Minecraft community is is its _size._ The Minecraft community is MASSIVE, one of the biggest fanbases in the world. And everybody has their own opinions of how things should be and how the game should be played/made. There are literally entire portions of the community that play on a version of the game that's over 10 years old, people who play for survival aspects, people who play for the building aspects, people who play modded, people who play exclusively multiplayer, literal children, and fully grown adults. There's SO MUCH diversity within the community that its very rare for everyone to agree on something.

I'm not inherintly against chat reporting because a large portion of players are quite young, but Minecraft literally gives you a disclaimer saying third party servers are not affiliated. In my experience, most of the top servers are moderated themselves to a decent state. Personal servers are based upon how you would usually act with friends. I think just a simple opt-out feature is the best for times where Mojang moderation simply isn't necessary. It is a useful feature but if servers aren't free to the players, and are independently run by companies/friend groups, they really shouldn't be made to comply with standards that Mojang made for kid safety.
@Wyattporter Жыл бұрын
I disagree that the community overreacted to chat reporting. I know people firsthand who have been banned from multiplayer for doing things in their singleplayer worlds, and the censorship system is utterly broken. Moderation of multiplayer play has been the responsibility of the community for a very long time, because multiplayer play itself was the community’s responsibility. There wouldn’t be a problem if Mojang ran official servers, and they were the only ones to have this feature, but extending _their_ rules into servers run by the community is overreach. The problem with chat reporting is that it was being forced upon PRIVATE, DECENTRALIZED servers, with their own mod teams and their own rules. Mojang could police and potentially ban you from a server YOU host and own the hardware for. It wouldn't have been an issue if it was confined to Realms, which ARE centralized, but logging into any server that doesn't have a report-blocking mod runs the risk of Mojang taking your 30 bucks back by shutting off multiplayer forever... and that's without touching on the lack of an appeals process and admitted inability to tell legit bad behavior from account theft.

I think the real reason why fireflies weren't added is because the design was bad and everyone made fun of it. They realized they needed to give them proper models, but then having a lot of fireflies wasn't possible because entities create a ton of lag on Java (due to interaction with frogs they had to be entities and couldn't have been particles). So instead of being honest about how bad performance on Java still is they made up a fake fan and said this was them listening to the community. And no one can go and harass a person that doesn't exist, so they thought it was a win-win.

Criticism is immensely important whether positive or negative and it is not reasonable to expect people who are passionate about a product to not have passionate reactions when things change. In my opinion these things should be kept in mind: 1. Always allow people to speak their minds, everyone needs an outlet for their feelings. 2. Avoid cyclical negativity, it does no good to empty your frustrations to just fill yourself with those same frustrations again. 3. Always keep an open mind, people can easily be blinded by passion and anger.

Criticism allows to express discontent with specific aspects of a product, and it makes it easier to spot the wrong aspects of said product based on multiple different critics of individuals to correct the mistakes. Maybe Mojang should start listening to their community for once. Maybe when Hytale finally arrives they'll wake up. All I'm saying is, until something positive happens, the best thing consumers can do is express their discontent (or content) with the product. It'd be naive to do otherwise. If you are a "yes man" you'll achieve nothing. We need the voices of the community to be loud and clear, not be silenced down due to them being not "right" forms of criticism. Pokémon is another good example of a series that once attracted mostly positivity, while nowadays it gets dunked on by many. How people reacted to chat reporting really wasn't an unfair reaction. Missing out on a feature you wanted is one thing, but being permanently banned without good reason is unacceptable. As you described in the video, Mojang over-promised then failed to deliver on multiple updates. Chat reporting has legitimate concerns with how it could be abused. Then there’s the mob votes, and the EULA changes. It’s hard to blame people for being negative when it’s due to Mojang’s poor decision making, though certainly the negativity is not a good thing. A negative community, as you say, tends to perpetuate and become worse (believe me I know, since I’m a destiny fan). How can you talk about such things when Minecraft itself is a unique, unlike anything else game? Or do we have other huge three-dimensional sandboxes where you can break anything? Let's think about the development process a little further, okay? 1) In fact, we have TWO Minecraft - Java and Bedrock. Due to the different programming code, many things that worked on one version will be broken in the other (hello, Bundle). And therefore, an additional process is needed in their creation, in essence, the creation of another new item.; 2) Developers can't add whatever they want - Microsoft people are always standing over them, not to mention the rules they set for themselves. I mean, take a look at the April Fools' updates - there's just a lot of content, but it's not optimized, it often contradicts the style and concept of Minecraft and rarely reaches the final game. 3) The main Swedish office of Mojang consists, in fact, of 20 people. Those people who constantly write about the state of the game, updates, and so on - this, in fact, is the whole REAL team working on the game. All the other 600 people are engaged in the development of spin-offs, testing functions, or simply are typical "effective managers". In the end, let's just compare it to mod development, okay? Let's take "Alex Caves" as an example. This mod has been officially developed for a whole year, and it is still unclear how long Alex has been thinking through all these ideas. There was no control over him from above, and therefore he could add an Atomic Bomb, Dinosaurs, and a submarine. He didn't need to port his mod to Bedrock (and it would be difficult to implement many functions on it). After all, he used the tools that were given to him by the Mojang themselves (as he himself admitted), while the developers of the main game are forced to create these tools first, and only then use them.

Short answer: Microsoft. Long answer: It’s definitely because of how corporate the Minecraft brand has become. They no longer allow C418 to make music without getting their grimy hands all over the rights to his songs, their Instagram page is full of these shitty “corporate veneer” infographics, and Mojang as a whole has been keeping it safe while updating their game, adding mobs that, while cool and fresh on the surface, only have one specific niche use each. What happened to updates like 1.16? We need more fantasy creatures, not more real life animals. Also they need to just get rid of the mob vote it clearly causes too much controversy for it to ever be worthwhile. The recent updates haven’t added to the game; they’ve cluttered it. And ALL this isn’t even including horrible updates like 1.19’s chat reporting AND all of the recent rushed updates cause “oh man, we gotta release bi-annual updates so our game can remain relevant!” like- yes they’ve gotten better at this but it sucks when they over-promise and then under-deliver (insert firefly reference here). Minecraft is ultimately too big to fail but Microsoft needs to stop shoving random IP’s into their game to sell on the fucking bedrock marketplace and instead take their time and make good updates. Microsoft does barely nothing other than funding the game and owning its legal rights. Also, you are one of the kind of people this video talks about, the people who got spoiled by 1.16 and since have only wanted one big update after another. Be happy the game still receives a new update nearly every week. Its Mojang doing everything, you know. It made the tech tree larger by adding netherite and added awesome new mobs like piglins, hoglins, and striders. But why all of a sudden does there need to be a ‘big update’ in order to bring good content like 1.16? You don’t have to update a whole dimension to create useful, worthwhile additions to Minecraft. Like dude. Come on. You cannot tell me the sniffer is a useful addition💀 it literally added two plants. Two plants that are decorative. Oh yeah and they craft dyes I guess. Like- okay… if Mojang wanted to give us more ways to craft dyes then why not give us a plant besides cactus to give us green dye? Nah they’ll just craft orange and cyan for no reason lol. Like- compare that to the piglin. It’s genuinely appalling these two mobs were created by the same devs. Piglins are extremely multi-layered, they have their own structure, they barter with the player, they have complex interactions with other mobs AND blocks, and they come in variants as well. I would have to agree with you until you got to the section about how people were overestimating the danger of the reporting system. The community was fine handling itself and if you wanted to restrict the options listed there you could for your own server, there was nothing forcing you to not swear unless the server put in a restriction but now if somebody reports you even if the server allows the action you can still get banned. This was probably one of the worst changes they have made in relation to multiplayer.

I presume it was mostly a thing to reduce their liability. Sure private servers are kind of their own thing and are private but you’re still playing Mojang’s game, Minecraft, and unfortunately in the real world, they can be held liable for it. (I believe also in some areas of the world laws are being passed to require online moderation) I actually think Mojang’s system is quite tame and I’m surprised they didn’t go even farther with it. You can bypass the whole system using mods! But it does kind of raise the point of why the system even exists at all… (I guess if you’re playing with a mod Mojang can argue you were playing a self modified version of the game that is not claimed to be supported at all by them) Also while they did add player skin and name reporting recently as well, they have also reduced the number and scope of the categories that a report can be made for.

Though both communities are suffering from the same mindset and don't appreciate the game, the devs or eachother. Although I am much more than a casual, I've always found myself excited at new features,no matter the game, I'm just happy to get more and see that it's still loved, but even I have found myself growing tired of the people who think they're above it all and that they know better. While there definitely is truth to the fact that that the players who played longer can say more, the mistake those kinds of players make is ignoring the people who haven't played as much as them and simply do not care nearly as much. I would really, really love to see more positivity, less hate towards each other and especially the developers come back to Minecraft community as a whole. I have been called out dumb and conformist to Mojang multiple times in the community, even though that's literally the exact opposite of who, what, why and how I am. I try my best to acknowledge people's issues with the modern version of Mojang while also trying to reasonably stay on side of Mojang themselves, their own issues and what might be happening. I do highly believe no one has the high ground in this situation of how Minecraft looks like currently - Neither the community around the game nor Mojang themselves are doing things right and from that comes the conflict, which people actively try and make worse with time, rather than trying to solve it and go back to being peaceful. I'm also very inclined to believe that had people been more reasonable and friendly, we could have had gotten better, more transparent responses from Mojang and maybe even more cooperation with fans and players once more just like we were doing it years ago. The issue is, people can't see past themselves, past their anger, expectations and everything that makes up a horrible human being - Once again, they certainly have a lot of valid reasons to get angry over, but that doesn't mean we should not respect each other, developers or the content they give us entirely for free all the time anyway. The hardcore community players engaged highly in the community do have their valid points but so do we, the more casual players, and so does Mojang themselves. I can bet that the reason Mojang refuses to work with community as of right now, acting more transparent and honest about everything is specifically because of community's outrage being bigger than it has had ever been before.

I will say though individual developers and employees of Mojang probably have gotten more and more silent to the community because of bad behavior by community members, like harassment and having their words clipped and taken out of context for Minecraft news and speculation all the time. I don’t blame them at all and I do wish we could be friendlier to them so they could feel comfortable talking with the community. I Genuinely think the root of the problem is Mojang. They have continued to leave speculation for how a feature would be implemented, they should state the intentions of how far it would go. I think that's why the Crab Claw among discussion communities and thus polls was winning; speculation for it was high in spite of mojang actually being fairly clear. Also like, the Armadillo won off the wolf armour, hence won off the back of the mob vote so it's not the general playerbase. Actual Number of votes compared to the overall amount of people who play minecraft are small. (for the record, I voted penguin - felt there was least room for over-enthusiastic speculation and gave flavour to a biome that is unlikely to ever get one) The negativity arises from discussion and critiques about Mojang, and the more they repeat to fail to take into account critiques the more the negativity becomes entrenched as genuinely something that is just negative from the get-go. Chat reporting came at a bad time, but it also showcased Mojang breaking the vague agreements it had of community self-moderation within reason, essentially they broke the Community trust in a large way because they no longer gave the community the autonomy to moderate when minecraft appeals to a very wide audience of people; much of them full adults whilst the aim of "protecting" the community was towards the (i'm pretty sure) minority population of children - where generally societally the responsibility is, should be, and has to be with the parents.

Not only is minecraft a game, but it reflects our real lives too. Mojang wanted to add a mob that would not be killed for its drops, but to use a different item to get it. The mob votes were only to bring people together to choose a mob suitable for the game and to answer their demands (like dogs not dying to creepers/hence dog armor).

The ending was overly romanticized and ignorant. Mojang actually has ignored serious problems for years, and I’m not talking about overpromising. I personally could care less about fireflies. But the optimization sucks, the chat reporting was very poorly implemented, and their communication has been poor for a long time now. The mob vote thing was also really annoying, as there are games that have done creature votes WAY better (it may be one of the only things Ark: Survival Evolved’s team has done better). They could use those other votes as better examples of how to do it if need be. The chat reporting also had an exploit that let people fake messages, and there are still ways you can fudge it. So it’s not just that they overpromise, their coding itself is objectively subpar for these important pieces of code.

It's important to remember that the negativity really started after the game became a lot more popular again. I think what happened before is that when people were super negative about the game, they just kinda stopped playing it and moved on. There were quite a few videos over the years talking about how Minecraft lost its simplicity, isn't the game it was and isn't fun anymore. But after Mojang started pulling their heads in with 1.13 and 1.14, it was enough to start the chain reaction of people coming back to the game (this was before covid). I think the reason people aren't just leaving now is 2 fold. First off, people care about the game a lot more because they were kids when they stopped playing in 2016-2017, and are adults now that recognized the importance of this game in their childhoods. Then there's also the explosion in popularity of the video essay. Negative "video essay" type videos do very well a lot of the time, so naturally if a KZbinr has any slight negative emotion towards an update or move that Mojang has made, they'll harness that emotion and make a video about it. This makes the KZbinr more negative towards it, along with their audience creating this sort of cycle. Long winded thing but idk, I played the game pretty solidly since 2011 and I care a lot about the game and it's community. A lot of Minecraft KZbin is a wasteland of commercialized garbage nowadays which sucks so bad

They owe it to the player base to make right their broken promises, or at least not continue repeating their mistakes. Since the phantom, there have been loud criticisms of the mob votes: their opacity to the mobs' features, their controversy, their perceived loss of losing mobs, etc. It wouldn't be hard to try some small changes to the formula to make them turn out better, but the most recent vote was a highlight of all that people hated about the past mob votes. If Mojang felt like a devteam we could trust, like they did a few years ago, this would all be much easier to take, but they've continued eroding the community's trust. Every public response we get feels like condescension. @miner_fabs Жыл бұрын
I definitely think there should be an update that adds some/all mob vote mobs that lost, or at least their functionalities. Not only would that get rid of most* mob vote backlash, but it's also a safe move, and Mojang loves those nowadays. That said, I never find it realistic to think that Mojang would "listen to the community" and "add all 3" right after the mobs are revealed. After all, by the point the trailers come out they would've already planned out a certain amount of resources to go to the main update, with just enough left for one extra mob (the winner). *I say "most" here since the mobs themselves are still one-note, and none are particularly useful. The allay does as much for the game as glow squid, but the community chalks that up to "we must have picked wrong" instead of "they're never that complex".
@manyseas1219 Жыл бұрын
Mojang is a multi billion company owned by a 2,78 trillion company called Microsoft. They have more than enough time, money and people to add all mobs. Mojang divides the company by forcing it to choice one mob out of 3 options. They can do better. I know that they wont change how the mob vote works. I dont care whether the mobs are useless or not. As long as they dont make the gameplay infuriating like the phantom does. I also dont like it when Mojang tries to nerf certain game features like villager trading. After all it is a single player game.

On the chaos with the mob vote (At about 17:35), wouldn't a casual player be less likely to vote/not involved in the vote? The casual player/overall player base doesn't usually interact with the game beyond playing and are less likely to know about the Mob Vote, Minecraft Live or even what's being added in the next update. So that means they would be less likely to cast a vote. The more hardcore player is more involved in the community and they would be more likely to know about the vote. So they would be more likely to vote. So wouldn't that mean that the mob vote is going to be more controlled by the more hardcore playerbase and the common community sentiment? ...Idk where I'm going with this, just felt like that section was a bit off as the vast majority of minecraft players don't actually vote (Wasn't there only about 5 million votes on the last mob vote?). Overall, this is a good video. The community has definitely has been getting worse over time, just some of the points you made felt a bit off/didn't make the sense.

Yes, so this is was a point where I wasn't quite clear about the gradient between levels of casual. I think the more "hardcore" are the people who are discussing the game, and a level up would be people who see the vote and don't care about the discussion. And then the next level up is the people who don't care/know about the vote at all. As for the "community used to be chillier"- not exactly, before 2019 Minecraft had populairty and mostly was saturated by obnoxious kids and low effort youtubers. Then for a while it "died" or rather became less prelevant- a hobby horse of a few. With popularity the game stopped being on "the verge of being dead", but with that there came a lot of realizations- mainly ones on how indeed, objectively speaking, updates for minecraft are filled with dead end content. Popularity basically excentuated these already existent flaws and because of being under (quite shitty greedfest) Microsoft there are also a bunch of "broadcasted changes" done for clout- like the well known "we removed this and that because of kids". In all honesty Minecraft should have more dense updates that aren't as frequent, not disimilarly to a game frequently mentioned- Terraria. There's a bunch of pointless drama too, and I do agree on that- there's the equalt clout chasing as the "broadcasted changes", but there's also the downfall of people who got famous because of playing Minecraft in "old days". A lot of old cloutchasers smelled blood in the water and tried to get back into fame, a bunch of them got found out for how shit people they are (fame attracts a lot of these sort, that's conversation for other day). Personally- I distain the "drama content" as it's never to the point and it tends to be hijacked to ruin "select people's" lives. But anyway- I am in a way hoping for Minecraft to "die again" as it will be a good humble pie to be served mostly to Microsoft (as we can't also forget that new fame of Minecraft was born from it's "competition" with Fortnite)

I'm on the exact same wavelength as you: When I see a thumbnail that nameshames Minecraft or says it's dead, I ignore it and tend to watch Minecraftubers that encourage positivity and good vibes. This doesn't mean I avoid the KZbinrs who constantly crank out this negativity, but I don't give it the light of day when I know how much I love the game and what it means to me personally.

Mojang is basically too caught up in bureaucracy to actually make any changes to minecraft now.

Yeah bureaucracy is key, not “laziness”, I hope that with the new dev tools they could make more efficient updates
