I just discovered your videos and am learning a lot already. You do a wonderful job of teaching and your replies to questions are appreciated. May I respectfully suggest that you leave the annoying music out of the videos, please. They detract from what you are saying and do not add to the quality. With that said, I look forward to watching them anyway, although I am constantly adjusting the volume. Thank you!

Looks great. So you can use Thinset as grout??? I e heard you have to add admix to use it as grout. Is that right? Always get confused between mortar and grout. I thought thinset was the adhesive but you grouted to fill spaces.
@kimwozniak56633 жыл бұрын
Although Thinset is typically used as an adhesive it can also be used as the grout as Bonnie used in this video. Most all commercial thinsets used today have admix already in them. (Think Polymer fortified) Thinset being an adhesive is actually a bit stronger than grout. The difference between them is more about the color and the size of the aggregate used to produce them. If you need the grout to be a different color than thinset you can pre-grout from the back. This is accomplished using the same technique in the video. Apply the grout to the interstices then remove as much as possible from the backs of the tile. Apply the thinset and adhere it to your substrate. Because you have already filled the spaces between the tiles with grout the thinset should not show through on the finished side. Hope this helps!

Thanks for this helpful video! One problem: we can't really "turn down the music when it is so loud" as then your voice is also turned down. My solution was to turn on English Subtitles under the gear icon, bottom right of the video. That helped. Hoping to see more videos, as this is really instructional. Now I think I know how to give it a try. Thanks for posting!

Hi Bonnie or Kim. Im new to making mosaics and I'm in the process of trying the indirect method for the first time. I have my source image on the bottom, above that is the transparent Con-tact paper which I use E6000 adhesive to glue the pieces onto the transparent paper. I'm getting ready to flip onto my frame but I'm not sure which adhesive I should use that will be stronger than e6000 so it grabs the whole piece in one flip. Could you give me a recommendation. Thanks
@MakeitMosaics3 жыл бұрын
Why would you glue onto the contact paper? Sorry, I am confused. e6000 is never mentioned in this video or the video about the face tape method (which is when I use contact paper). For the reverse method you must use the flour paste glue on brown paper, as demonstrated in this video.......sounds like you came up with your own hybrid version. I do not know of a glue that can compete with e6000, because you need the mosaic to release from the contact paper and e6000. Perhaps I am not understanding. Good luck.

How much glycerin do you add? I believe that was left out of the recipe. Thank you! The bee is beautiful.

A few drops, if doesn’t thicken in a few minutes add a few drops more. Like a lot if recipes kind of flour, water, overall environment plays into to formula. Good luck and thanks for being a fan.

Bonnie, Can I use regular white copy paper instead of "Brown Paper"
@kimwozniak56633 жыл бұрын
White copy paper is not as strong, thick, nor does it have the structure of brown craft paper. It will be much more likely to buckle when damp from the glue and tear when you try to move it. White paper also absorbs water more quickly and will start to release before you want it to when setting your piece into place.

Hi, thx for your video about indirect technique. One question: I used these technique to create a stepping stone (50cmx50cm). In your book is shown to first ad grout, then turning into thinset. Do I have to let the first grout-applying dry, so that the paper is getting dry again? Had Problems to turn around my paper into the thinset. Thank you
@MakeitMosaics4 жыл бұрын
If I understand you, you were "pre-grouting" as outlined in my book. Yes letting the grout cure for a day and then applying thinset mortar and doing the flip is best. The grout will help make the mosaic stable in addition to then already having the art work mostly grouted. In the video I used smalti, which typically is not grouted so I did not do that step. I hope this helps.

Bonnie, TY so much for the vid on the reverse method on brown paper (I have your book, "Guide to Mosaic Techniques.") I want to use this method due to the varying thicknesses of the tess I'll be using. Question: I assume I can use this method to install on a vertical surface? I plan to work in sections to keep the installation manageable. Is there anything you can think of I need to be aware of? Should I apply a thin shmear of thinset to help set the tiles (after glueing onto the brown paper and wait for thinset to setup) and then apply this to my intended surface (concrete columns)? Or, just go directly from glueing to the brown paper (wait to dry) and apply directly to my columns? TIA
@MakeitMosaics5 жыл бұрын
Yes very common technique for vertical surface. Yes work in sections, be sure to make lots of "markings" so you can easily reassemble. I have a video on the maverickmosaics.com website titled "Ft. Barnard Playground", 8 concrete columns which may give you some insights to vertical installation (although work was face taped, many same tricks apply) . maverickmosaics.com/galleries/installation-videos/ Take LOTS of photos as you de-construct, it is really easy to loose track of exactly how to re-assembled. No need to apply thinset to back of tiles, but you may consider back-grouting. Also consider coloring your thinset (with proper concrete colorants) to a color similar to your grout color. Those columns may need some attention, need to be tile ready, relatively smooth, may be worth putting a very thin scratch coat on them prior to install. Feel free to drop me a note through the maverickmosaics.com website with any other questions or concerns. Good luck! And thanks for your interest in our channel.

You were using mortar or thinset. What if you want a coloured grout? Can you substitute that, or is thinset crucial to the process?
@MakeitMosaics5 жыл бұрын
Thin-set is mortar. You can not use grout. Grout has NO ADHESIVE PROPERITES. I do not recommend using pre-mixed thin-set for this process, mix from powder. To custom color grout (or thin-set) see our video titled "Coloring Thin set Mortar and Grout Video". Good luck and thanks for your interest.
