Okay, so here's what I was trying to say in the chat. In the ADWD prologue, Varamyr recalls killing his older brother when he was very young, which he did by skinchanging one of the family dogs. It probably happened in a fit of childish rage or jealously after some small incident - a small incident which seemed big to a child. Arm a 6 year old with magic powers, and this sort of thing would absolutely happen, even with a soul not as dark as Varamyr's. So, I think we can read this story about Varamyr murdering his brother as a young child as a cautionary foreshadowing of how dark Rickon - now a pissed off, abandoned, wild 6 year old warg who's already tapped into his raw ability - could get. Anything is possible. My second and related thought was to reread the chapters at Queenscrown - there's on Bran chapter and one Jon chapter, and if you combine them, you get a glimpse of what a pissed off warg king can do. He can sit in a tower and call down death on soldiers with his animals - Bran was terrifying in that scene with only one wolf. Imagine packs of wolves and huge, murderous ravens... and the greenseer can sit comfortably behind the walls of his keep or cave. These two scenes together show us what kinds of power and horror could be in store for Rickon Stark... ....as he rides Shaggydog at the head of an army of cannibal warriors riding enormous unicorn goats, ravaging across the north on a collision course with Ramsay Bolton, whose face Rickon will eat raw. #RickonEatsRamsay

I realize this is a year late, lol Just like Bear Island, Skagos was part of the North and very loyal to the Starks. I don't know if it is true but I think that the Skagosi had Stark blood in them. Sending Rickon to Skagos was the wisest decision that Bran could have made. As we know the show twisted storylines this way and that way. Because we all know about Rickon's greensight being stronger than Bran's We also know from the books that Jon's storyline was twisted as well. They left out the prologue of a Dance with dragons, so they could keep dumbing down Jon. They thought that making Jon's character look weak would help to make Bran look larger than life. Both Bran and Rickon were greenseers. But Jon was a powerful skinchanger who feared using those abilities. Now back to Rickon, the Skagosie could have nurtured Rickon's abilities to the point that he could have helped out in the endgame. He was young and raw in his abilities and I think that they would have taught him how to control those abilities. Shaggydog was wild but Rickon could control him.

In the show when Jon runs to Rickon it reminded me of an episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer- where she promises to protect her sister even if that means it would cause the world to end. Buffy says she doesn’t care- and ‘then the last thing she’ll see is me protecting her.’ This is how I view the Jon and Rickon scene. Jon knew he couldn’t save him- but that wasn’t the point. The point is that the last thing his baby brother, who was abandoned, would see is his big brother coming for him- to defend him, to avenge him- for Rickon to know he was loved and family. I found it a powerful act of love.

In Deep Geek Thanks. To me that scene is where Jon became a true hero. I liked him before but this made me love his character so much more. That decision wasn’t wise, smart, or the correct way to fight a battle but it was the moral decision. It was right. Plus, up to that moment Jon was pure ice- what happened to Rickon ignited him. He was on fire with righteous fury. He embraced his destiny after that as well- at least in the show. I think this scene will be more vital for Jon in the books.

One of the things about Rickon is that a shaggy dog story archetype seems to imply length and detail that holds attention and then an anticlimactic end that subverts expectations. Perhaps it is the idea that all of our expectations of Rickon being unimportant shown through *lack* of detail on him that GRRM will subvert.

Loved this collaboration! As a mom, this topic really touches me. Rickon was a sweet little "true born" moppet that that gets worse treatment than Jon. Even old Nan seems to shuffle him off. Luwyn even concerned himself more with convincing Bran that his mother loved him most. Sad. What kind of people can turn their backs on a toddler? I hope karma is served and Rickon can get compassion before he is Sacrificed.

Just a bit over 2 years here since this was published--I've only "found" In Deep Geek a few weeks ago. I do want to thank you Robert and Gemma for this program because I have never believed GRRM would write a "throw-away Stark". The HBO writers did a LOT of cutting-and-pasting and general bastardization of the books so I was not surprised at their treatment of Rickson as another way to show Ramsey as a psychopath. I look forward to more information in the "Winds of Winter". As I recall, OSHA came back with Rickon and attempted to kill Ramsey so IF there is a Rickon return it would be likely that OSHA came as well

Rikon, raised on Skaggos by Osha and Shaggy Dog will not return the scared little boy he was when he left. He will come back the strong, vicious fighter and be the Stark of Winterfell. Let's face it, he's what's left to run the family at this point. He's not going to act like the perfect highborn man but I believe that he will protect fiercely what is left of his family and those he brings into it because he will never allow what happened to him to happen again. No one will want to cross that King of the North!

You know why I love these streams? Because they send me down wild rabbit holes and tinfoily theories. In this case after listening to Robert and Gemma and nodding my head alot I started comparing Rickon to Mowgli (raised by wolves) and Bran to Kaa the Python. Kipling's Kaa is actually a mentor to Mowgli..not an enemy...and he can go into trances and see into the future. At one point Kaa rescues Mowgli from a place called the Cold Lairs (ahem..where else would the WW live?) and also helps Mowgli and his wolf pack defeat an army of Dholes which are dogs in Kiplings work and great slimy worms in Lovecraft works. Did I mention I love the streams?

Shaggy, now larger than Grey Wind ever was (R.I P.), larger than the white wolf to the west and larger than his sister Nymeria even. Healed wounds from his battles with the native monsters of Skagos and with the unicorn before Rickon was able to warg into Pointy Horse and Shaggy Dog simultaneously and was able to stop both of them from further injuring the other and now he has 2 legendary Pokémon! Osha rides them both (and Rickon from time to time whenever the true King In The North wants 😏) I fffffffuuuuu... I knew it!!!! Rickon is gonna be the very best, like no one ever was! I also think bloodraven wasnt sure about bran . And this is why he sent wolves to all stark children. But. It is hinted that bloodraven had a role in bran's falling. I think that rickon is stronger but more difficult to control and train and bloodraven didnt have the time.so he chose the easier bran. New to KZbin asoiaf. Been watching a lot of @davidlightbringer videos and this is my first in deep geek video watch! :) At 16:01 you're talking about rickon knowing that Ned had died before Bran knew and it kinda of reminded me of LMLs video about the Targaryens putting dragon eggs in the cradle with potential baby dragon riders and the bond forming earlier etc. Made me think of if maybe in the past the earlier you bonded with your direwolf the more powerful the connection would become resulting in more powerful green seers etc. Again I have no idea if this is an old theory or not cuz I'm new but just sharing my thoughts as I watch more content :)

TamHutchins He was only 11 and had not received any training from Ned as they start training at 8 and Rickon was 6 when his Father died. After Bran fell, Rickon was neglected and was said to have become wild. He spent his years from 6 - 11 running away and hiding but luckily unlike Arya always protected by someone so he didn’t have to do the fighting for himself. We also have to take into account that we have no idea what Ramsay did to him. I dread to think how he was tortured. It makes me feel sick. So although the weave thing should seem obvious, I’m not sure Rickon was all there or that he grew much from the age of six.

I think Gemma is kinda right about Rickon not willing to go home. All the Starks are now in a place they wanted, Sansa between handsome knights in the Vale, Arya with the faceless men and Bran in the cave with the three eyed crow. They all are in a perfect place for them, but there is a slight chance they will come back to Winterfell at one point. So i think Rickon will be feeling home on Skagos. Preston Jacobs had a good theory about how the wargblood comes into the Stark line, He thinks that the Wargking was blackwood and he got the wargblood into the starks by taking a daughter from a Stark king. That is the reason there was a war between the Starks and the blackwoods resulting in the leaving of the blackwoods from the north.

For years I've blamed Rickon for not zigzagging, but I've since gone to terms that it was Jon's fault. Rickon was running to his brother, his seasoned military commander brother on horseback. If Jon had turned his horse he would have led him. He didn't. He led him in a perfectly straight line. Both of them were panicked and neither was thinking but Jon was the adult with experience.

My theory on Rickon is this: he will die, soon. But his link with his wolf is the important think to be aware. The name of the wolf only points the fate of the owner. Rickon will die, but he will warg into his wolf. In his wolf’s body will be were Rikkon will be esencial. If you tel me. I would revive Jon but kill Ghost, I would keep Rickon dead but Shaggy Dog alive, beside Jon. That would be EPIC.

I think Sansa was trying to get both Jon and Rickon killed so that she could be the last remaining heir to winterfell. The knights of the Vale charged once it was thought that Jon had died. Once he comes out of the pile there was a pan to both her and Ramsey that made me think she was upset he survived.

if sansa becomes lady of Winterfell the starks are doomed. I personally believe rickon will become king in the north and rebuild house stark. read the rickon is a smith theory.

Sorry Robert...Rickon cannot be both "cowed" and "feral" at the same time. In the show (barf) Shaggydog has been killed. IF Rickon is BOTH himself and the wolf he would go berserk - remember the reference to Jon Snow going berserk? He would not be set free by Ramsey and try to run away Rickon the Feral would have turned and attempted to murder Ramsey. This theory does not fit and - as with much of the last 2 seasons of writing - was just a crap attempt to tug at the heart strings of the viewer--BooHoo.

This is about the books tho he was saying that he thinks Rickon will have a bigger role in the books and it’s kinda been confirmed he will in the hbo book Fire cannot kill a dragon( it’s basically a book going into the making of the show) it says D&D wanted to get rid of Rickon completely cause he doesn’t do much in the first book but GRRM said not to because he had plans for Rickon also the guy who gives Rickon and Osha to Ramsay in the show dies in the books trying to safe Robb at the red wedding and Rickons couldn’t happen in the books at all cause Rickon on Skagos an island full of cannibals and unicorns being brought back by Davos and Stannis is probably going to win the battle of ice since unlike the show none of the northern lords except half of the Karstarks are loyal to the Bolton’s and there all planning on betraying them

I might have to disagree with the concept that bloodraven wasnt looking for Bran and that he was just waiting for a stark warg/any stark warg. First BR flatout says he was watching this Bran, as well as his father and everyone else in winterfell. In Brans first vision ever he was able to see clear across to Aashai and possibly even stygai. He can zero in on his sisters in Kingslanding and Jon at the wall. Why wouldn't a practiced super powerful greenseer such as BR know whom exactly he was waiting for? Also, I've read some rather interesting theories regarding Old Nan. Some say she's shiera seastar and was sent to Winterfell by BR to wait and watch for the greenseer Bran. That's why Old Nan knows so many accurate stories and why she says all crows are liars, she was forced to live out her life serving the starks and Hodor for BR. If she is Shiera Seastar she may have been the metaphorical dragon set loose at the sacking of winterfell. I think its unsettling that old Nan is such an important plot device in the first book and then dropped for all the rest. Nobody knows nor cares where she is or what happened to her. Bran assumes she's at the dreadfort or dead, but nothing is final. I'd rather like to think she used her dark magic to disappear. Unrelated to Old Nan, if Rickon stays in the story and he is a powerful greenseer/warg I wonder if Bran will end up eating Rickon paste? Brother slaying brother is a huge reoccurring theme in the books and may just be unsettling enough to not make it to the show. Plus it could increase Brans abilities, as well fit with the show Rickon being sacrificed for the benefit of winterfell. Also, keep in mind that Bran was the first character to come to GRRM. He was always going to be a primary character driving the story.

yeah! Poor Sansa. That was just terrible writing from D+D. Just like the scenes with Arya which failed miserably. Anyway the point is Ramsay had Rickon because of more poor writing about the Umbers, and he would never give him up. Sansa was right. She wasn't trying to get him killed so she could be queen. She is not after the throne, or a big title. She is after getting her home back.
