The problem with this statement is that it is over-romanticized and desperately sensationalist. Rocksteady was never good. They literally made one pleasant surprise, a ho-hum iteration, and a low key disappointment. This is all overblown hype spewed out by games media riding on the coattails of the C. Nolan Batman movies, but the march of the sheep will continue and get "hyped & excited" over gross exaggerations.

How are they just riding off of the Dark Knight trilogy, when so little of the games are actually influenced by them? Bane, Joker and Scarecrow, heck Raj Al Ghul are all completely different from their movie counterparts. The games have far more influence from the animated series if anything and even that is a tad of a stretch. Your case feels far far more “desperately sensationalist”… Do please explain your perspective, L&R

I should have known they would all have guns, but the kicker is that these four characters fit clear individual archetypes which would have made them play very differently: Deadshot is your standard long-range gunner, he's got the precision for sniping and the dakka for controlling mobs, but he's squishy if things get too close. King Shark is the opposite, the juggernaut who is all brawling all the time and his gameplan is to close the distance by soaking damage to feed a rage meter, sometimes picking up and throwing junk in the environment. Captain Boomerang is the zoner who controls the mid-range with sweeping and looping boomerangs for big juggling combos (think Kratos with the Blades of Chaos), and can fit them with various extra effects, like electricity for extra stun or explosions to clear groups. Harley is the prankster with the biggest toolkit, but doesn't excell in any specific category like the others; she has the bat for up close, an over-sized revolver to cover range combat (good damage per shot but hefty recoil), and various traps that she lays down in her wake, while being highly acrobatic. What's key is that they cover for each other's deficiencies, thereby encouraging cooperative play. But no, they *all* have guns, and I guarantee that most of what you'll be doing in-game is holding the right trigger until your finisher gauge fills. 🙄

Yup! That's exactly how they all should play. I don't understand the point of taking established characters with established skills and abilities, and then just swapping them out to suit a different gameplay style. The game design should be inspired by the characters, not the other way around. It's that approach that made the Arkham games so great. They were all about "what feels like Batman? How do we turn that into gameplay" I have no doubt SSKtJL will be technically impressive. But I suspect it will be a poor representation of the characters.

Yeah, we definitely should've known they would all have guns. Especially since they showed a trailer with all of them shooting guns in it. This game will be a disappointment, and I knew it from the second we started getting leaks that Rocksteady was making a multiplayer Suicide Squad game.

It's fine if it's an OPTION, but I would much rather prefer Harley with a bat, boomerang man with ANYTHING boomerang(boomerang gun is fine), deadshot with shotgun fists, and king shark with any heavy weapon(axe, Chainsaw, or a rebar with concrete on it)

The most shocking thing about all this to me is the fact people are shocked it's a live service game. Like dudes, it's an AAA western published multiplayer game in the year 2023. 90% of those are live service games.

AAA western devs don't make single player games anymore, at least not directly. Rockstar has released exactly one game in the last 10 years in Red Dead Redemption II, and they even tried to make that one a live service game (yes, GTA V came out 10 years ago). Bethesda Game Studios' last single player game came out over 7 years ago (thankfully since being bought by Microsoft, the focus seems to have shifted). The last single player game Blizzard made was Diablo 3, which came out 11 years ago. Say what you will about Ubisoft, but at least they like... make games.

Tbh avengers combat was pretty fleshed out and everyone of the original characters played different, the story and repetitive missions and greed is what killed it. When they try to sale you cosmetics then the armor you pick up for rewards can’t effect your look or no one will buy them. Sucks that Rock steady didn’t just figure out how to make a fun power fantasy Superman game.

I think your point about the guns is an incredible point. the battle pass and the cosmetics are less telling of a mid game than the fact that all these superhero's have guns. Like sure Deadshot does, and Harley Quinn uses revolvers, but what about these characters comic book personalities will come through in gameplay? If Deadshot's gun isn't unique than why is Deadshot there instead of the toilet bowl guy who also never misses and has a whole TV show about him? It makes the whole suicide squad angle seem like an excuse instead of a genuine artistic excitement to make a game about the suicide squad. the battle pass is just further evidence that the core game underneath the DC paint will probably be a generic shooter. Here's hoping were wrong and that game is fun, unique, and a game only rocksteady could make. unfortunately the screenshot definitely makes it look like every other corporate cash grab that's using current trends as an aesthetic, to cover for, and hype up another generic, "Live service." If it launches with a shitload of bugs and hardly works it'll be really unfortunate but it's also something I just expect at this point which personally makes me kinda sad. Arkham knight had a lot of dlc's that showed the potential for a batman universe game with multiple different playstyles, with unique animations related to the character you were playing but you can even see the shallowness by separating this group into, "classes." king shark is the tank he will have a big gun that does surprisingly low damage for how big it is and he'll tank damage, Deadshot is the dps mage-esque character that will stay back and do damage, Harley Quinn will probably be some hybrid healer dps, and boomerang will be a more up close midrange dps. to create, "balance" they all shoot guns so they can focus on creating weapon skins that don't effect gameplay, and only change the visuals of random in game items, thus invalidating the original design of those weapons and making the loot more generic overall. the real visual progression will be made with your wallet, and choosing a different character will be about seeing different numbers go up instead of unique gameplay changes.

If a game has more than 2-3 currencies, they aren't there to make the game more fun; even if it is a basic single player game (Midnight Suns), all of these extra currencies exist to either obfuscate predatory monetization, or waste the players time. I remember several patents from around 2010-2012, that were all about manipulating the player; I think Total Biscuit covered them at the time.

This is true almost 100% of the time. I can only think of one game that has more than 2 or 3 currencies, and it's actually needed and not used as real world monetization. That game is Hades.

@SmoothLegend I haven't played Arkham Knights, but from what I know of it, you are probably right. I would bet as far as gamepley goes, Midnight Suns is far superior. The combat and mod system in MS is executed very well, to the point I can ignore most of the time wasting mechanics and currencies. Gotham Knights, on the other hand, appears to not have compelling gameplay or a good open world, so all the other busy work is less forgivable. All that being said, you can tell MS was originally designed around tons of microtransactions.

SS is the biggest of fizzles. There might be a decent story but you know everyone’s gonna finish it and move on. This is a game that’ll be half off a month later. Sadly people are gonna lose jobs over execs chasing trends and not having the foresight to take a hit financially to focus on the game first. Makes me wonder what their project before this was that got canned. Maybe it would’ve been better than this.
