Building a MASSIVE Entertainment Center

This basement living room has been something we've wanted to tackle for a year or so now. We finally bit the bullet and started planning out our built in entertainment center. With an 85in TV and such a large wall I knew right away that this entertainment center was going to be massive. After measuring out the space and coming up with a plan we settled on a 15 foot long unit with lower cabinets and bookcases surrounding the TV. This will end up being the perfect place to store blankets, toys and board games. Time to go get lots of plywood!

Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included kzbin.infoUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.

I like this build a lot. But a tip from my experience, when you glue boards together, it increases the strength of the bond if you spread the glue evenly onto both surfaces. This way your glue gets pressed into every nook and cranny better. Clamping it, for some reason, (explained in another video I saw) it increases the strength even more. Hope this helps.

Nice job! Most of the drawer faces I've used in the past were independently screwed from the back of the drawer box front using short screws in two to four places, in addition to the handle holding, and that was for small drawers.

I built a very similar entertainment center in our house, but I wish I had done a few things differently. 1) I wish I had built in an open space below the center counter for a center channel speaker. Instead, it's sitting on the counter below the TV. While this works, it's a bit large and imposing (and doesn't go over well w/ my family). 2) I wish I had built up the upper center shelf (spanning the two bookcases) to support more weight. We use it as record storage, and obviously they weight a ton. And while it's quite strong, I'm a bit nervous to add many more than we currently have in there (i.e. ~2/3's full or ~100lbs). 3) I wish I had cut and installed outlets in the base/side of each bookcase.

Looks great. You may have an issue with your floor however as the large unit built on top of it will restrict its movement. It’s better to cut the floor out below the unit and leave a 10mm gap to allow for expansion which is covered by the trim along the bottom.

build-iful work as always! This project is perfect to me as I'm planning exactly the same project on a wall that's about the same length at 14.5 feet. I was also going make 4 drawers in the middle but flank them with 2 cabinets on each side (4 doors total per side) but having seen your video I think doing what you did, with 1 cabinet with 2 doors on each side would definitely look better.

Two questions if I may please. 1) Was MDF an option and if not, why if possible please? I'm going to be building something similar but was unsure of plywood vs MDF. Only because I thought MDF was easier to prep and looked smoother than plywood but that's not the case looking at your brilliant example. 2) why did you choose not to add a back to the shelves? What will stop those shelves sagging so to speak? Thanks and sorry for all the questions.

I'm having trouble with project quotes, I've built large cabinetry for most of my life, but it's always been for family or myself and smaller projects for outside the family so money has never really been an issue until now. This project is a wall entertainment center about 126 " x 23.5" x 8'. It's going to hold a large screen TV two huge side speakers two bottom base speakers and four doors on the bottom with two of those doors having pull out drawers, using birch plywood and poplar trim. I've seen in store prices range from 1,000 to 5,000 with non-solid wood structure so I haven't found any pattern to price projects, I did see that cabinet makers in Texas make about $20 an hour which seems like it should be double that, so I'm just unsure of the method to come up with a reasonable quote.

Great build! Simple, clean, elegant. Awesome work, sir! These measurements are *almost* identical to something I'd like to have in my home - but I can re-measure/re-configure the model I just bought from your blog (I hope). Question: I'm working with slightly less space, about 13 feet wide/9.5 feet high, and the depth is cut off on the left side by a lower window sill for only about 14-15 inches until you hit the window's moulding. Otherwise, the depth of the drawers/cabinets would only be about 14-15 inches, which is maybe a bit too small for something this scale? The standard depth is 20-24 inches. Any ideas for a workaround? Still worth it?

Fabulous job and team work. High spec finish which I like. It’s given me some inspiration for our living room. We are in a bungalow and need our living room updating. Our conundrum is we have a wide chimney breast with two good sized alcoves. I envision built in units similar to yours but one side above base unit I want the 50” TV on an extendable tilting bracket that goes flush against the wall when not in use with the cables hidden so it looks aesthetically pleasing. I know what I would like….just don’t know how. Do you have any examples of such a project? Thank you for sharing 👍🏻🛠🧰

This is a really nice, well documented build. I'm struggling with my own similar design but I really want the center of the TV at eye level (42" from the floor). My rough calculations based on your measurements is that center of your 85" TV is around 55" from the floor. I'm curious as to whether the height of the TV was a design consideration. Going to be building this in a few days! Just wondering what you mean (in the blog post) when you say "if against a wall, install L-shaped panel to side of cabinet" for allowing the door to open. I get that if the door edge is right up against the wall, it won't open... just wondering what exactly the L-shaped panel would look like and where it would go? Also you didn't mention how much 1x2 and 1x4 trim would be required.. I'm guessing I can just calculate that based on the number of shelves, etc. GREAT TUTORIAL / PLAN / GUIDE!!!
@MrJ411
@MrJ411 Жыл бұрын
Yes, a little description of how you trimmed the wall side would be nice. I'm guessing you had one side of the L presenting a flush face with the cabinet doors to the wall and the other side of the L runs along the side of the cabinet so you could screw it from the inside of the cabinet? I was a little disappointed that your PDF plans didn't touch on some of the more complicated parts like finishing and trim. Thanks for posting, definitely got some good ideas for the built-in bookcase I'm working on.
