I actually went into an AD. I asked the salesman if he could get me a 41mm Black Sub. That was November 9th. He told me come back Dec. 11’s. This is good content, Paul, thank you for sharing it. This is consistent with my observation after dealing with my Rolex AD rep, and one of the AD's honchos. From a rank-and-file AD rep's perspective, selling Rolexes doesn't provide a lot of job satisfaction because you're constantly saying no and turning people away; you need to justify to your manager why your customer should be allotted a hot piece, ie basically "selling" your customer to the store manager. Also, Rolex itself constantly spies on you by sending random walk-ins to ensure you stick to the company line when answering questions. Yet, despite all this, people stay in their jobs because there is no retail job more secure these days than selling Rolexes.

It's a self fulfilling prophecy of shite. The AD's reserve the hard to get watches for the best customers. The best customers are the ones who buy a lot of watches. The reason they buy a lot of watches is because they sell them on the grey market and make a fortune.

Thanks for airing this Paul. Regarding waiting lists, Rolex dealers are quick to say that there are no longer waiting lists, rather "expressions of interest" lists. I think there still are waiting lists, how or if you progress along this is another matter of course - when the guys at Scottish Watches recently intervied Brian Duffy the WOS CEO it was said that his business card states that he is "keeper of the Rolex waiting list" and has a file on his desk with the details of this. Clearly they keep intelligence on purchases, I know that as the Fraser Hart dealership I have bougjt from has now been taken over by WOS and they know I have also purchased from Goldsmiths and Mappin &Webb previously. If so, buy from the grey market. And if not, then I would reckon you only want the watch, cause it's damn hard to get and you'd be "proud" you got one. Absolutley a brave thing. As she said, it's tough in brick and mortar retail, period. Weather its watches/jewelry or anything else. The internet is slowly strangling it, and contrary to popular belief, it's not the ability to buy something from your own home that is the kill shot, people have always had the ability to shop remotely, by letter or telephone. The real dramatic change has been the ability to ship an item any where in the world in less than week.

Hi Paul, thanks very much for sharing the interview with us. This also confirms what we already suspect the inner workings of these Rolex ADs. This flipping will only stop when the honest watch enthusiasts stop buying from them. I say pay the MSRP and not a cent more. If flippers find that they can't get a profit out of selling in-production SS professional pieces, they will stop going back for more watches. The high-rolling VIPs have bought a fair share of these watches to flip and have earned enough profit to recoup the losses they cop from buying the undesirable watches. Of course, if the watch is discontinued, this is a different story altogether. Sure I'll pay over MSRP for a 116600; I just can't afford it at this time. cheers, Tom

Hi Paul from a value retention point surely existing Rolex owners should be loving this. It means their current Rolex pieces hold and rise in value as they are becoming hard to get which is why i’m guessing you buy them and stick them in a safe? Maybe i’m looking at this the wrong way. She said getting a Submariner won’t be easy cuz there’s higher demand in bigger countries like the US and UK. The lady gave me a paper where I can write my name email phone number etc. And behind that paper I wrote 2 watches: A Sub 41mm and Explorer II preferably in white but black is also fine. Since I hear many stories that its hard to get and all, I thought I won’t get a call in a month or so. 4 days later, I randomly got a call that they had received an Explorer II in black and I told her I will come take a look at it and then make a final decision if I want it or not. And voila, I bought the Explorer II for retail. This is my first ever Rolex btw. I think it was maybe easier to get cuz there isn’t a high demand since it’s a small island where not everyone randomly thinks of buying an expensive watch, especially in today’s days.

I guess hypothetically, if we was an AD dealers you are using leverage and the Rolex hype to increase watch sales. Unfair "yes" but a business to run,. If you are prepared to buy a watch from a grey dealer and pay double the price, you may as well buy a couple of brand new watches from an AD. When dealing with the Grey market they all quote their business running costs (justifications) hence their mark-up prices. And if they purchased it at RRP then they are more greedy than an AD at est Rolex 37% margins.

If anyone has a better idea to keep the business viable, I'm all ears. They sell luxury, not essentials. Plenty of other great brands easy to buy. Get off your Rolex obsession, people. Even as a VIP customer, my lady Rolex exec. always, but always, checks every short supply sale to me with her manager. That’s proper power - in any franchised model. Hahaha. So the kickback system is to buy other watches simultaneously. So the kickback is on the record as a sale with receipts. The kickback goes to the corporate revenue, not into an employee pocket. A professional flipper just needs to flip the other watches too. I think this ties into yesterday's video you shared, where the buyer said he was able to buy stainless rooter sub from a store with high sales volume. So withholding for other purchases could be a strategy for stores to boost income that wouldn't otherwise have enough sales volume to support Rolex's AD requirements. Maybe this is a network marketing strategy. The flippers could be seen as a hybrid lender sales force for that store. So lesson appears to be to buy from a dealer that sells enough without extortionate sales methods. Alternate lesson is to shrewdly analyze (without self deception) if it is worth your while to flip other watches. Wow, the price of a Vostok Amphibia is less than half the number in rubles as the number of pounds sterling for a Rolex subie. (99 rubles per pound today.) Here's my favorite submariner! instagram.com/p/CCjwKAND13F/

Two groups of people in the comments: 1) those dealing with ADs trying to buy Rolex (both successfully or not) and interested in their alleged business practices, and 2) flippers / existing owners (watches probably 'investment safe queens') / those that have no problem skipping 'the list'. Group 1 appreciate the videos for what they are and the insight. Group 2 find them 'boring' or troublesome as it unveils allegedly shady business tactics from which they profit. Its these videos that probably generate the most views as many are finding themselves in this situation with purchasing Rolex. Those that find it boring or tiresome can always choose not to watch rather than whining? The owner of the channel can do what he wants. For what it's worth I've had mostly great dealings with my AD though it'd be selfish to suggest this content should stop due to that as it is clearly serving a purpose.

Would love to have an Oyestersteel Sky dweller, I guess I would need 3 versions. Blue, Black and White dialed. I think it's funny that, the sales gal says the one guy came in and to get his Rolex had to buy a Breitling and an Omeeeeega. Sadly for Breitling that's the only way they would sell some of their watches (Oh, and today if you buy a Rolex you can get a Breitling) Because any other day you could buy a Breitling at 20% off in a Breitling AD, same for Omega. Just saying. Frankly, like many others I am not pissed at Rolex, just the ADs you will rarely win one over. I love all of my Rolex watches, but I am probably done (probably) buying them from an AD if I plan to buy one. Actually, that should probably be my new strategy. I travel a lot and if I stumble across 1 I will buy it. Or as many as I can. Otherwise, there are a few other watches I want. IWC, Breguet, Patek (no, not a 5711🤢) unless I could buy at list and flip it 😃. Paul, personally Rolex can end this problem, the easiest way is to make more watches but then, of course, they wouldn't hold and or even appreciate in value. We only bitch and moan because we can't get them (hence the value proposition) and of course the horrid treatment by the ADs which to me as a former Retailer doesn't make sense. I know you will hate this, maybe, but if Rolex really cared about their true clients (the end users) cause anyone who buys is a client, they could end this. If I ran Rolex I would discontinue ADs and only have factory (Rolex Owned) Boutiques 1 in each major City, in most countries, and sell online. Online would be for standard models, like if you just wanted a Sub or Datejust. The Factory stores would have all models in stock for show no or very little "walk out" sales. Maybe not even working models (saves them money and they wouldn't get robbed.) Then we could all see, hold and lust after models that most of us would never get a chance to see. They would also be able to employ better-qualified watch sales people to help you in your experience. They could help you buy a "stock" model or customize it through the custom division software, (dial color, rare stones, blah, blah, blah)Then you would place your order and have it delivered either to the Rolex Boutique or a second tier qualified/certified, Authorized delivery servicing dealer (what we would call ADs) those dealers would get a "commission" then everyone is happy. Oh, not the current ADs, but who gives a F^c$ about them personally any longer? Rolex makes more money, they don't have to make any more watches and flood the market killing the secondary market but still preserving the value prop for people to "invest" in the Brand. They can track original purchasers better to cut down on unauthorized resellers and pure flippers. Lastly we get the watches we want. And could really create some cool 1 OFF-custom pieces. How would you end this problem with the ADs, Paul? What would you do if you ran Rolex?

Do all Salesperson work on commission? i was told by my Rolex AD he does not get any commission on the watches he is straight salary. I said what incentive does any of the salesman have on getting a person a hot watch, if there is not commission? No need to call anyone, or sell anything if you dont have comission.

i been triying to buy a gmt master for the last 6 months with a local AD , i always pass by the same store and every time i am there , there is a the same customer buying a Rolex from the same sales person . every one knows this customer is a flipper . i was comment that with tje sales men that help me. AD sales to flippers and has priority with these customers . Rolex and the AD are the ones supporting flippers.

4 subs in a month. Noooo will never see one. I guess this is a UK AD so most likely goldsmiths. Interesting and thank you to the lady for the info. Puts some perspective on it. Personally I love reading about looking at and buying watches. If I cant get Rolex I'm buying other stuff. Lesser brands and used.
@dr.supersnake46274 жыл бұрын
AD’s know who the flippers are . How many sports watches the same person needs as the lady said !! We would like that this practice ends so the integrity of the brands remains where they should be. Manufacturers should somehow investigate and take care of this issue.

Well done Paul. I will say that 5 subs a month is far more than I would have thought. Unless that included bi metals. I wonder how many LV models they’ve seen?

He does but rightly so. I am not a flipper as I am lucky enough to have some of the desired Rolex Sport models but the ADs I deal with still make me feel I have to do a song and dance with them before they supply me a watch. It is super frustrating so I feel sorry for Jo Public who has no history with the AD. I understand why Paul does these videos, it’s speaking out for the majority of the public.

Nothing new tbh, I know about this since 2-3 years. That's the way it is. It doesn't matter if someone has the cash and would like just the one steel sport Rolex for life, if you are a "nobody" you will never get one. Buy the crap no one wants and you might be able to get the one you desire... maybe.

Rolex professional two tone is still obtainable at ADs. If you want a tool watch buy Omega. Rolex is mugger bait so in the long run you’ll be better off wearing an Omega.

Surely AD’s want a mix of existing clients and new business. If you won’t sell any new customers the watch they want how do they expect to grow their business?

Unfortunately a lot of AD’s are being tarnished by one rogue shop. If you want to walk in the door and expect a watch that day - go to another brand If you build up a relationship with an AD your work will pay off. Flippers are blacklisted. Period

It this is not news. Everyone knows how Rolex ADs operate... I’m after a New Air King or Explorer 1 and was in London today and visited 4 ADs and same answers all the time... “ we currently don’t have any but if you email us your details we will let you know if one of the watches you want come in” 🙄

How is it possible to miss the point, it’s made constantly, repetitively, simply using different reference points. I’m no Rolex fanboy, I own a bunch of them along with other brands, and I accept that if I shop more with a particular AD I will likely be treated differently, in exactly the same way as if I buy coffee at the same cafe each day. Why does everyone thinks it’s unfair of the frequent hi value customer gets treated differently from the one off......that’s the nub of it......so no not missing the point at all
