At 27:35 or so you point out the separation of the laminated tab. On my day old closed cut valley cuts, every tab was lifted. Roofer had not dog eared or nipped, so I inspected the combined 50 feet. All along the cuts, triangles and partial tabs where lifted like pockets. I was using tar base sealant/adhesive. How every tab was lifted/pocketed, is beyond my imagination. I was using a sharp hook blade to nip, but would a dull blade cause every tab to separate like that. The bottom of the tabs remained bonded. I did try to hit each lift with sealant, but man there was tons of them.

Good old fashioned couch cushions bro! Anybody's throwing out a couch on the curb, rip the fabric off the big cushion pieces and use those. We usually spray the shit out of them with Lysol or bleach and let them dry out for a day and then we kneel on them all day long all summer. It even helps out on rubber roofs when we're doing detail work

Thanks for the video A DIY guy here who just installed one of these roof vents for a bathroom fan. I've done a few roofs on garages and out buildings but never on my house. Very scary cutting into your roof but I watched this and a lot of other videos carefully and I think it will be fine (I will keep checking on it. The roof has less than 10 years left so I'll get the pros to take a look at it at that time and maybe fix and replace if needed. The installation instructions that come with the roof vent aren't very thorough so videos like this really help. Thanks.

Icing the entire surface is good IF you upgrade your intake and exhaust venting mightily! Just incase anyone else caught that. Ice and watering the whole surface can in some cases cause moisture to be trapped ironically enough. The moisture in the attic does breathe through the roof deck and through the underlayment and "out" of the roof. So in those circumstances make sure you get your ventilation moving better than ever so you don't rot out the roof deck with ice an watering an entire section. And my guess is thats true for Indiana just as much as it is here in Wisconsin! God bless and Awesome video!

Never miss a video! Only thing I would have done just because the flanges on these vents are so small is put a piece of ice and water to go on top the shingle making a “bigger” flange.

I thought buying a vent with an integral round pipe was a good idea until it came to sliding it into position. Fortunately, my 25 year old shingles still had enough flexibility. I plan to have a new roof installed within the next year so I didnt caulk the flange down. Hopefully, my shingle will prove to be watertight.

Really appreciate this video, especially because making it added a bunch of time for you up on that hot roof. One small suggestion, and maybe it's just my personal preference: if possible, maybe put the camera on a little tripod to get a steady angle, so it's not whipping the view all over the place. As I said, though, that's minor given the value of the video and the fact that you were already putting yourself out to make it. Thanks again.
@GrandRoofingInc
@GrandRoofingInc 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks I've considered that and tried it but it adds even more time constantly moving that camera in and out of View. Simply Having the camera on my head looking everywhere I look is the easiest. Unless I had a second person tagging along all day to run the camera, but that would probably cost even more then the time it would take me to move the cameras.

Great video i have a leaking roof vent and only leaks when raining hard with wind . My friend who is an experienced roofer helped me install the new roof on my garage and with a vent without the flexible hose. It's just a small garage does it really need a roof vent ? It didn't have one before and years later the roof started leaking everywhere but didn't look that bad so replaced it with a roof vent. Luckily I think I have a few pkgs of shingles.

I just use soft plastic/rubber kneepads. Works great. Doesn't damage shingles even in the Florida heat, unless I twist on them, which I am careful not to do. The straps take a couple week to get used to and may cause some redness, but that goes away after the skin toughens up some.

My 3rd layer sits flush on the top of the box. Should I got back and put another hole in the roof slightly lower so I can stack my shingles like your did on layer 2 instead of layer 1?

Old couch cushions.. take the foam out and put it in a trash bag then back into the cover. Then if it gets rained on it's not that wet and dries quickly .get a set of 2... they also allow you to walk on a steep or hot roof without scaring the shingles up. It was leaking under the left side and getting trapped by the tar and overflowing the bottom cut. I've made good money because people don't understand that you can't caulk/tar a vent in. If installed correctly it doesn't need it and it will only make it leak, not fix it. If you are going to caulk it, it must be done under the vent, not on top.
