I have found that many people seem to perceive the terms “Privacy”, and “Security” to be the same thing when they clearly aren’t. Viewing these terms interchangeably, and becoming complacent thereafter is a big mistake. A corporation like Crapple, or Goolag, et al, (should) have the best security models in place, as the function of their business relies on airtight security. A model with airtight security could allow for privacy, but this is not in the best interest of our corporate overlords… What good is having billions of people on your networks, if you’re not able to exploit and profit off of them? Decentralized, anonymous networks, and P2P mesh-nets are the future, where security and privacy don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

Apple doesn’t give user an option not to have personally identifiable data gathered by Apple itself when using their services. In fact their privacy policy explicitly says they do gather it. The fact that you get an option to opt out of iOS sharing certain extra NON-identifiable information (when Apple tells you that’s what you’re being given the choice to opt out of) in no way implies you ever had a choice (other than not use the services) with the identify and information they’ve obtained your consent to gather.

Not really. This is basically a BS clickbait study. The App Store app is basically a glorified web browser. The apps and their descriptions are all on the server. Of course they can see what ‘pages’ are viewed on their server and this was all consented to in the Media & Services terms and conditions (and has virtually nothing to do with the optional iOS analytics that you can turn off if you prefer.) If people didn’t want Apple to see them look at an app then they shouldn’t have agreed to it.

If you’re arguing there was no voluntary contract then the specific circumstances would have to be litigated to see, but there can be little doubt that Apple’s privacy policy, that’s right out in the open for anybody to read, and that’s incorporated into the terms that customers agree to to access services like the App Store, is a voluntary contract that one could easily refrain from accepting.

Hearing stuff like this just tires me out. I moved away from Android and Windows to MacOS and iOS back in 2017 for privacy reasons and Apple just keeps pushing people like me away. Ads in first-party apps, tracking when I say not to, it is exhausting. I am seriously considering just using this stuff till it dies then moving to Linux and GrapheneOS. I’m done with giving up my privacy and information for a slightly more convenient user experience. I use Linux on the desktop daily and it is great.

you moved away from android to iOS for privacy? thats what their marketing does. if you do a little research, you realize iOS/MacOS is not that much better than a windows computer and an android phone with GMS. any stock android rom (stock = aosp = only the pure open source android, none of the proprietary google play services) will come with basically no telemetry (minus opt-in telemetry for crash reporting and such). stock android IS private, you dont need fancy grapheneos for privacy. (grapheneos helps you STAY private when using proprietary software, so you dont have to try very hard to stay private when using grapheneos, because the operating system does it all for you, while stock android starts off as private, but as soon as you download any apps your probably bombarded with facebook/firebase/etc trackers) what made you move to apple's ecosystem? was it based on their (incredibly) deceptive marketing? when i came to these realizations, my instinct was to do research and find what worked best for me, which was lineageos (i would use 3rd party software to try and "mimick" grapheneos's features, because im not going to give up my galaxy s5 for a silly google phone)

I think the worst part is the lack of transparency from user to service. Like they have all this data collected that isn’t available to ourselves. For example if I read an article 2 days ago. This is the foundation of the data brokering industry. They are using a loophole to claim it is anonymous, but rely on the opposite being true for the data to have value. Truly randomized data would have little value, for the purpose of targeted manipulation.

this is the case with practically any proprietary software that claims to be "the private choice" i mean, look at anom. a device made to be used by people who care about privacy. the only reason they didnt get caught was because you couldnt inspect what the device was doing and had to trust it wasnt tracking you, which it actually was. they locked it down so hard you couldnt even unlock the bootloaders on these phones. proprietary is never private, and you should always take these claims with a pound of salt until you can inspect the code for yourself.

As for Google Camera, I find GrapheneOS Camera adequate enough for most situations-and for those times where I'd like to take the full advantage of my Pixel 6 Pro camera and Google's AI algorithms, I have a separate profile that has GSF, Google Camera and Google Gallery (needed for Magic Eraser and such features) installed that I can quickly switch to, take as many pictures as I want, and then logout from it back to my main profile which doesn't run anything Google. Best of both worlds!

as a software engineer, i can say that this is an incredibly normal practice that is done on basically every device, and on every platform you use. i attended a conference at Hulu's HQ recently where they went into detail on how they implemented this same kind of tracking in disney +, espn, Hulu, and their other platforms. This info is typically not connected to advertising to individual users. 99% of the time, it's used to test user engagement with new features to see if the feature makes the platform better or not. They roll out a new feature to x% of the population, then see how people interact with it compared to a control group. Apple definitely should respect the toggle to turn it off if they have one, but the actual information they collect is not that big of a deal imo.

There is tons of software that can be trusted; particularly open-source software, free (as in liberated) software, and non-profit software. ISP have laws to follow and a reputation to keep. Whether it's a lot or a little, there's always "only so much" of anything that one can do regarding _ANYTHING at all._ However there are many effective things that can be done for online privacy. Just look at a channel like Naomi Brockwell or Rob Braxman. Yes there are a lot of things that infringe on one's privacy, but they can all be avoided or minimized, so the more privacy invasive stuff that exists, the more that can be done.

@@MsHojat I agree with everything you said, but I am simply saying that if you yourself don't have the skills necessary to code or design all of this stuff, you have to trust someone at some point (including the open source community), or either just not let yourself be too concerned with it. I do certain things to help ensure some privacy in certain areas. For example, I use Signal for messaging and I use a trusted VPN when I am not on my home network. And on my iOS devices I have made use of the "Request Apps Not to Track" features, which I can definitely say has cut way down on the number of "personalized" ads I see, and therefore the data that some companies are sent. But yes, again I agree that if you are willing to put in the time to figure it out, and you are willing to not use iOS devices, there is quite a bit that can be done to to help you have a greater degree of privacy online.

@@Super80sMan it doesnt take a genius to install lineageos/grapheneos/calyxos onto an android phone or install debian/ubuntu/linuxmint on a windows computer. in fact, my 10 year old brother can do it.. the only excuse left is not caring enough to do it. also, reading source code is alot easier than writing source code, and you dont need to be a C++ genius to understand that a specific line of code is sending telemetry or not. (you only need to know very high level stuff about a language and the operating system) because of that, no one in any of these big open source projects wants to get caught sliding in malware into open source software, since it'd be very easy for them to get caught and would happen extremely quickly (there are legal repercussions for these things and most people wouldnt want to get in legal trouble for this when they could make alot more money attacking people in different ways)

And then there's all the extra processing needed to collect all that data...

Generally hardly any data is sent by mobile data network. It will save the data and upload it once it encounters wi-fi. There is a setting that allows this to be the case even more. Also the data can be compressed to a very small amount. Sending location every minute if done optimally would theoretically use like a few kilobytes per day or something. That said, data collection could use more battery energy.

who cares about extra battery consumption when you realize iOS doesnt even disable the radios in your phone when you turn them off anymore. iphones are so bad for privacy its hilarious. do you notice how much battery the radios in phones consume? (especially keeping a connection with cell towers, that can be quite difficult if your in an enclosed building, like a school). when i was forced to use an iphone, i always enabled airplane mode and that saved considerable amounts of battery compared to when i just "turned off" the radios on the phone (airplane mode actually turns them off because otherwise it could be dangerous).

Watching people’s stock market behavior is really suspicious. Someone is probably taking advantage of all of those data. Also, I’ve seen the KZbin app recommend videos based on things I’ve said despite never giving KZbin microphone access (no camera access either). The recommendations had no related search or watch history at all, so it seems clear to me that Apple is lying about some of its app permissions, and Google is being just as creepy as ever. GrapheneOS is the way forward, but I’ve already got my hands full trying to ditch Microsoft by moving to Linux. Even if I wasn’t already working on switching operating systems, I’m not too enthused by the hardware available for GrapheneOS and CalyxOS. Why do phones have to be so ridiculously huge? I want something the size of a 2016 iPhone SE or a UniHertz Atom L, not a tablet masquerading as a phone. At least my iPhone SE is easily replaceable at its $60 eBay price tag, but I clearly pay in other ways.

Apple isn't lying about it's app permissions - they just never stated where they are enabled to what extent. The simple truth is - just like in this video - Apple considers privacy very differently than the average user. For them it is okay to collect data about you; just not in the dev department. This is why the toggles for analytics exist. If you want to share that data with devs, they'll get it. If not, bad for them, but Apple still gets the data. One way or another, it just depends who is allowed to know it and what kind of NDA they've signed. There is no de-Appling an iPhone for a reason. Because there isn't supposed to be a way to escape it.

I'd argue Apple's definition of "private data" is data that can identify a specific person. Thus, collecting anonimised data is not in violation of anyone's privacy. Which is also why the court case isn't about privacy violations per se, the whole argument revolves around the claim that the phone's settings leave people with the impression no analytics will be sent, but some are sent anyway. I think it is safe to say they intentionally don't mention anything about identifying information in the court case... They'd have to prove the data being sent can be mapped to specific people to win that argument. I suspect if they could win that argument, they would have made it, but they didn't...

There is nothing that GrapheneOS would prevent you to do that you can do on a stock Android if you really want to. As for the Google Camera, to quote myself from another thread, "I find GrapheneOS Camera adequate enough for most situations-and for those times where I'd like to take the full advantage of my Pixel 6 Pro camera and Google's AI algorithms, I have a separate profile that has GSF, Google Camera and Google Gallery (needed for Magic Eraser and such features) installed that I can quickly switch to, take as many pictures as I want, and then logout from it back to my main profile which doesn't run anything Google. Graphene's camera app is not as good as the Google one but you can install the Google one and get all the functionality. For instance, the graphene camera app does not allow me to record 60 frames per second video. That is a trade-off, but if I want 60 frames per second video I can head over to the Play store and install Google's default pixel camera app and use that just fine if I am willing to deal with privacy compromises

They make it pretty clear what services are covered by the Media & Services terms and conditions (so much so there’s even a separate sign-in and separate terms and conditions acceptance for it.) They also disclose the fact that these services require acceptance of these terms on the box, and make the terms available before the purchase, and take the phone back no questions asked if you disagree with it. There’s really nothing at all wrong with the way they’re running their storefronts. Your issue is with them blocking sideloading and third party app stores. I agree with you actually that’s the abuse of their position and should stop. The fact that they could protect your privacy even more than they do now is really just something to complain about (and not very potent in credible terms given how far ahead of their competition they are in the privacy front coupled with them meeting all of their legal obligations, even the stringent EU and CA ones, regarding privacy.)

Another interesting thing to cover would be ungoogled-chromium. As we all know, Google Chrome contains lots of trackers and collects sensitive data on anything they can get their hands on. Chromium is the foundation of Google Chrome and although it is opensource it is still technically being run by Google since most of its contributors are working for Google. ungoogled-chromium is a fork of Chromium, similar to Graphene OS for android, which remove everything Google related from Chromium, including trackers and analytics. I’ve been using it for a while and it’s great! Maybe a nice idea to cover in one of your videos if you haven’t already.

no, that just helps the chromium monopoly. at the end its still google in control of the code, and while any spyware they add can be removed, any features they decide to remove (ie. ad blocker support) cannot easily be re-added without considerable effort. so while google cant add spyware, they can remove any features they want from chromium, and in turn nearly any forks of it (unless you want to pour weeks of effort adding those back). better is to promote browsers that arent controlled by big companies, like firefox, because its not very likely that mozilla tries to remove adblocker support or something like that, since they dont care about ads anyways (that isnt their business model).

The trade-in deals thru Apple may suck but the deals Best Buy and T-Mobile offer seem out of this world to me an Android user. In terms of privacy, I think Google spies more when I use a laptop and their search engine than when I use an android phone. As an Android user, I’m more concerned about 3rd party data collection (3rd party apps, OEMs, carriers, etc.) than I am 1st party data collection (Google) on the Android Operating System. Google allows its users to manage and control the data it collects, even if you want to use targeted advertising and some of the data Google collects is useful to me. One example is the Google Maps timeline feature, I use this quite often to write down hours I’ve worked if I don’t remember the time I got to a certain location. 3rd party data collection is a scary place, big companies like Facebook, and Amazon gives users less control over the data they collect, 3rd party apps and games often sell user data, and then there are apps like TikTok which, under Chinese law, can be compelled to provide a hostile foreign power data that individually is useless but collectively can compromise the security of other nations.

As a developer, I can say that in the applications I've developed, I also collect information about everything the user does, every click, every scroll, every button press. At least in my own applications, this data isn't used for advertising or anything malicious. We use the data to replicate the actions a user took before an error occured, so that we can track software bugs. In complicated software environments, software issues can be extremely hard to track and replicate, and so knowing the whole picture of what the app and user were doing at the moment an error occurred can save thousands of hours of developer time. I'm not saying any of the valid uses for such information justifies ignoring user opt-out preferences, because it really doesn't. But I hope this provides some insight into why this kind of data might be collected, and what it can be used for. Though i'd bet my last dollar apple is trying to use it for advertising too.

By doing deep packet inspection, you can find out what data is being transferred from your device, even if encrypted (as it's your own device). Now here's the problem. If I published the data extracted my friend's phone (even with consent), apple would sue the hell out of me because I revealed exactly what data is being collected, and by which server (an apple server). To an extent It is not possible to provide some services such as stocks and news without collecting the information on what your watch list is, etc. because the server needs that information to serve a response with the relevant data. This may have been mistaken for analytics.

I get what you are saying but it’s not settings, preferences or App data that is being talked about. Maybe they try and spin this into “server side processing that helps add functionality to Screen Time” or something. The thing that was shocking was the comment about “Analytics” which are the actual files your device records about HOW you have interacted with a certain thing. I usually think of the “Analytics” files containing a list of what files/apps the phone accessed/used at what time. Anyway. I’m with Louis on this: They collect more info than they need. They are not transparent about what they do with it. And they are not transparent about how long hey keep it. It IS attached to a device ID so is it anonymized, used for personalization, or is it info that is utilized by every part of the Apple services ecosystem? And then can we trust that this is not used or sold to ANYONE else?

Not an apple fan or product user, I am a software developer and I understand that the developer of the app controls the flow of data and the network requests made. My point was that the stocks app Making requests to apples server may have been how they provide the data and not for analytics. Just pointing out one potential flaw with the study. If it is analytics then it is a shame that they are doing that.

@@zwerko The data is provided by Yahoo, but Apple stores and forwards that data for caching and knowing what alerts to send you. The app wouldn’t work without that data. This video, like a bunch of Louis’s is a bit overblown and click-bait.

Fair point then-if they aggregate/customize the data on their services they obviously need a way to know how to package it for your needs/interests (least they forward you all the stock data and have it filtered out locally but I guess that would be very costly in terms of bandwidth and processing). But then the question is-are they using that data only to provide you the service or are they also capturing it for telemetry sake, and if latter, how much PII can leak via those means. It's probably buried deep in their ToS and privacy policies and, like most companies out there, they are probably not doing a great job of keeping these up to date anyway.

yeah i feel burned. I got an iphone for the first time in years because I heard they were better with privacy than google. Which is still true but as time has past I realize that I can't trust any of these companies. Will probably make the move to Graphine os soon. I can recommend a macbook. I use it as my daily driver. It’s a mix between a windows laptop and a linux laptop, and well done. I don’t know about apple’s practices on macbooks but I do appreciate it. It’s very good for software developers and people editing photo/video. That’s my 2 cents. For my phone though, I switched from the s21 ultra to the iphone 13 pro, although I think I am considering switching back. The most limiting factor is that my car only supports carplay and not android auto.

Its also important to consider apple uses data to train Siri's AI so it can predict what your going to do when you pick your phone up. Not all data collection is totally malicious it would just be cool if users could have the options to opt out of whatever they want instead of Tim apple being the only one with access to that setting.

Graphene sounds like a great idea, but is pretty limited to what you could do with low effort, like, not wasting a lot of time trying to do stuff samsung does effortlessly. I have been using samsung for like 10 years now, i love all the extra features i get from my phone, tablet and watch and use them on the daily for studying and entertainment, but i hate how much data they collect. I try to limit the data collection as much as i can by opting out of stuff but i know it's not enough, and I'm kinda getting more lax about it as it is just getting more annoying. Another annoying thing is that the privacy focused hardware and software is on average years behind the current standard.... So it's hard switching to them.

@@YounesLayachi i mean, it's not that i know jack shit about them, i just do not know if it is actually worth all the effort and "sacrifices". google/microsoft/facebook will most probably eventually get info even if i take all precautions, something will slip through the cracks. take for example my uni, they use microsoft sharepoint for everything. those fuckers (microsoft) will not serve you anything on the website if you do not enable ALL cookies. I'm not going to make a virtual machine on all my "private alternative" devices to be able to casually check my schedule or download some lecture material... Out of curiosity, what are the things you do on a daily basis that necessities a Samsung device/tracking (+Google tracking) that would take a lot of effort and not be as effortless on GrapheneOS? Short of services that absolutely require sharing data with the 'mothership' (but then why even bother w/ a privacy/security oriented OS if you have desire to use such services) and stuff that requires super-privileged access (only Android Auto comes to mind), I can't think of such a thing.

I think the apps mentioned here are not ones we use very often. So yes, it sucks that they are collecting data but it doesn't really matter too much as compared to say KZbin, Facebook, or TikTok. The App store is well . . . a store and to run it effectively, they need some information about the people using the store. So them collecting some data on the users to use within the store should be okay. Now if they are sharing this info with other companies so these other companies can market their products to us within different apps, that would be a big problem.

When we open the app store, it is able to show us (recommend) apps that it think we would like. The better it is at doing that, the more satisfied a customer would be. How else do you expect to discover cool new apps? Now of course there must be limits to how much (and what) data is collected, but the type outlined in this video is perfectly fine.

I don't understand why one would think that that would not happen. Like I said above, this is a store without eisles for us to go through to discover products. So they need a way to market apps to you such that you are able to find what you're looking for and discover new apps at the same time and what they're collecting is extremely basic data. And like I said, it's the App Atore. It's not a social media platform. Personally, I open the App Store maybe twice a month so I don't think it's a big issue.

Honestly the only reason I have not used GrapheneOS is it isn't supported on my device, and there are zero alternatives even in the same ballpark when it comes to being privacy focused. I was really, really hoping Linux Distros would pick up more traction in the mobile space faster than they have. I hate, hate being shoehorned in to two ecosystems that are beyond scummy; I don't even use Windows outside of a tightly controlled VM. It might seem paranoid, but damn it I'm tired of being the product for all of these software companies.

which phone do you have? it may be supported by lineageos. and it may be possible to port lineageos to it quite easily depending on the SoC it has. also, does the device support GSI? you can get degoogled android with GSI (it may be unstable tho, you definitely want to test drive it a little bit before using it long term).
