My brother in law Jason and his family recently moved to Colorado. That means I have a new shop helper and he has a new house that is in need of furniture. When I saw their small round kitchen table in its new larger home, I knew we had to do something. The original top was only 36" in diameter and actually looked oddly small for the base it sat on. So I offered to make them a new 48" top that would also match their newly-refinished red oak floors. A quick weekend project! Here are some of the products shown in the video:

That top is absolutely beautiful. For removing the part where the jointer doesn't reach, I fasten a thin piece of hardboard to half of the base of my trim router. I then use a flat bottom bit set to the bottom of the thin piece. The added piece then rides on the jointed surface and the bit trims the rest level to it.

This is a great video to show that sometimes it's a good idea to up cycle a piece of furniture instead for building a completely new one. I'm sure Jason and his family will enjoy their "new" table, and think of you often when they use it. Awesome Job Marc!

I just tried osmo top oil on a red oak tabletop I'm building for a client. It's a really beautiful finish, I'm very happy with the results I got. The only other comment I have is that I think your technique is more complicated than it needs to be. I simply sanded up to 220, and then applied osmo using the same squeegee that you used. Then wiped off wet spots using a soft cloth. That's it. No buffing, no sanding pads, no wood filler, nothing else. Your finish might be better than what I got, but this is so good I just don't care to make it any better. Really an amazing finish, thanks for the tip to use it.

Hi mark your videos got me in to you tube and you have taught me so much so feel a bit stupid trying to give you a tip, but for temporary router trammels instead of sticky back tape try drilling a hole through the trammel matching the diameter of one of your router guide bushes, centrally where you want your router bit to cut. Then simply insert the guide bush in to your router and pop it through the hole in the trammel. The best bit about this apart from speed is is the router can rotate as you go around. Sorry you probably get sick of keyboard woodworkers trying to give you tips you already know.

The real question is “what does it look like after a year of use after spillages?” Right now I am sitting having breakfast off a similar round table that is over 20 years old. I finished it with polyurethane. It’s top is one piece of cedar of Lebanon with lovely grain showing through. It has a couple of gouges but no watermarks or stains. Basically it is almost as good as new. It has had no attention other than wiping off with a damp rag after meals. So a showroom patina might sell a product, but that’s not enough for me for a horizontal top or a kitchen work surface. . .

Mark, I really appreciate this video, as this small project is a lot more representative of the work I do, though I do love dreaming of your big projects for some day in my shop. It's these simple projects that serve as a great way to practice technique and attention to detail, and I learned a thing or two about some basic methods to help me improve my accuracy (router jig), and I really like your thoughts on the low-VOC finish. We also like using wax on some of the mechanical parts in our puzzle boxes. It works great for kind of lubing them up and so they can move back and forth.

The Osmo looks like a nice finish, and I have been tempted to try it, but when you look at the price of this stuff!!!!!! In a weakened state I purchased a 'sample' of 125ml of the polx oil satin, and with taxes and shipping came to $40.17 canadian, Can't really complain as I can't remember being forced to buy, but it won't stop me from grumbling about it when I try it. Thanks for the great video and attention to detail.

I'm working on a test piece of pine. First very thin coat of Osmo hardened nicely. Second took over a week. Third is still gummy/sticky after two weeks. Help? Eventually for a pine kitchen countertop.
