I once made a cross country drive to visit family (from Alabama to California) for a family reunion. On the way back, I visited some friends in Arizona, left the same day late in the afternoon, and made it to Clovis, New Mexico, and spent the night at a motel. I got up (exhausted at about 10 AM…MT time) started home, and drove straight for about 1,100 miles to get home to my wife. I got home in the wee hours of the morning, and just collapsed in the comfort of my wife’s embrace. Whenever I hear this song, I think of that drive.

As a much younger man studying at university in the mid-2000s, I fell in love with a girl who lived 3 hours' drive away. I would finish my supermarket job at 11 pm on Thursday night and take my little rattlecan of a car onto the motorway, reaching her at 2 am, spend the night with her, drop her off at work on Friday morning, then drive back up to start my own shift on Friday afternoon. That was how we spent our first year together. We married the year after I finished university, and we've never been apart longer than a single night since. This song holds a particularly special place in my heart because of that year.

No wonder he said he would follow anyone on stage......except Orbison! Roy has such a distinctive voice that was so natural only to him. I hear imitators of folks and have looked for Roy imitators but they can't hold a candle to the original. Maybe people will truly sorrow when they realize who we lost when we lose the rest of the Traveling Wilburys. The only semi equivalent is The Highwaymen of which we lost Johnny and Waylon. Both of those groups are treasures. When Jeff Lynne and Bob Dylan pass and then Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson pass, only a handful of people will realize what we lost, but will lose it when we hear Trigger go silent forever
