From what I can recall about this story, the car used a pump brake system where if you hold it down, it will stop. The flaw in this system is if you if you press it too much in a short amount of time, the brakes get weaker and weaker until it doesn't work.

Most modern cars have a vacuum boosted braking system. Repeatedly pumping the brakes will cause the vacuum boost to run out. The vacuum boost only recharges when the accelerator is lifted. In this case, the accelerator was never lifted and it never had the time to rebuild that vacuum boost. That's why the brakes have got weaker.

I worked for Lexus when all this happened. It was from doubled up floor mats that people were installing and we had to shave down all of our gas pedals in case someone put rubber mats on top of carpet mats and it got the accelerator stuck. Also we did a computer reprogramming so if the brake and accelerator were pressed at the same time it would cut power to the engine.

I’m at Ford and see it all the time. People double mat and it’s either sliding around under your feet or the pedals are flicking the corners just trying to catch. If you look on the mats they even say don’t install on top of another. It’s almost as bad as dirty windshields and a buncha shit covering the dash. I don’t think that was the case. It happened to me in a toyota camry. The gas pedal doesn’t get stuck. The gas pedal will be in its original position, but the machine accelerating itself.

Actually, there was also a theory about power assisted breaks, usually people step on the brake, and let go for a second and step on it again, because of muscle memory. Now, if you let go of the brake with power assisted brakes even for just 1 second, you can't stop the car accelerating.

My wifes boss at the time was the sister of the mom in the car who tragically died with everyone else when they ended up crashing. It was a very traumatic event that impacted a lot of people beyond the family. They later sued Toyota and it was settled out of court. There were other similiar events with other cars and the story into how Toyota covered up several missteps in production and slow recall efforts is shocking but not at all surprising. God bless.

My mom did this in 1982. Brand new car reversing out of driveway and the car suddenly accelerated she was screaming that there are no breaks but in fact she had her foot plastered right down on the gas pedal. The car kept reversing off the driveway went across the street hopped over the neighbor's driveway and split his pickup truck in half. Me and my brother are both in the back seat we all got out without a scratch. Apparently, this is an illness that can happen to any one of us where we get confused and it can shut down our common brain practice between gas and break.

I read a lot of these comments and could Not find anyone suggesting to simply turn the car off. It can't continue to accelerate if the ignition is OFF. Just turn the car off and steer it to the shoulder while doing a controlled braking. The steering will not lock as long as you keep it in gear.

No i watched the full video and some cars have a special brake system( the name of this was mentioned in the vid but i cant remember, waiting for some one else) it will cause your brake to fail AFTER you hit the brake( and it works)then let go for any reason. In case people don't know your car had a built in safety feature for this exact scenario. You can move your shifter from Drive to Neutral without hitting the button. Just push it toward Neutral and it will release the transmission. This prevents the engine from providing power to the wheels. Once you have done this, quickly pull over and turn off the engine so you don't burn it up.

In case of a runaway, braking will overcome the engine's power, but heavily load the brakes possibly breaking something Shifting to neutral will disconnect the engine from the drivetrain, and the brakes will still have normal power from the engine Turning off the ignition in gas cars wil stop the engine from making power, but you will have limited brakes. So brake once, don't pump the pedal (Also diesel engines can still runaway with the fuel pump off if they suck up flammable vapors)

That's incorrect. I've seen this happen before & Everytime the drivers tried to use the break it didn't work. 911 operators even try to have them shift into neutral and even that doesn't always work. In our particular case, my grandfather had his car in reverse and couldn't stop it. He pressed the brakes so hard he broke the chair as he was putting his full body weight on the brake. Eventually a mailbox and a car stop helped stop the car. Unfortunately my grandfather never drove again and the recall happened a few years later.

It’s called muscle memory. In the Toyota he was driving he might of thought the gas was the brake. In Toyotas the place where the gas and the brake are different from where the gas and brakes are in other cars. So he probably thought the gas was the brakes.

The brakes were power assisted. The reason of the acceleration was the carpet of the car holding it down. Since the brakes were power assisted, when you hold them down for a short time then release, they get weaker and weaker everytime you do so.

So If your car doesnt have power-assisted brakes, and take off the brake pedal when your car is accelerating, you have lost power assist and cant do anything, but, i found a way on how to stop the vehicle. 1. Turn off the vehicle 2. Brake and swerve between traffic when at high speeds 3. If its not enough use the handbrake and try to stabilize it. I might be wrong but thats all i know.

Somebody did investigate this on a toyota camry just like this one, it turns out because of the specific breaking system toyota used then, when he tried to brake with full throttle, the car did stop, but next time, he did the same, stepped on the brake, while full throttle, only this time, he took his foot of the brake while still holding the accelerator pedal, pressed brake again, and it wouldn't work anymore. So if Mark's acceleretor did get stuck somehow, that means he literally had no brakes

This happened to my brother before, all he had to do was turn the car off and then it stopped accelerating. If this ever happens to anyone don’t forget just turn the car off and pull over, sometimes the cruise control cable can get wrapped around and make the car get stuck accelerating.

I remember hearing that if the brakes are malfunctioning, it won't work no matter what you do. He could have had his foot on the brakes but, nothing responded. Once panic sets in there really isn't any way to help much. I say he did have his foot on the brake, noticed they were not working, panicked and crashed.

That’s a bad idea. Because you lose your power steering if you turn the car off, and you lose your power brakes. You will decelerate, but you’d most likely plow into other vehicles.

Disclaimer: I did my best to verify everything in this comment but I may have missed something, or might have understood something incorrectly. I think you don't want to turn off the engine: depending on the car it might disable power steering. While without it the car is still absolutely controllable, it gets harder and the difficulty increases as the car decelerates. It also likely to lock your steering wheel (remember that anti-theft mechanism?). You probably don't want to add extra difficulty on top of the already serious problem you are facing. What I would do is put in Neutral, or shift the gears down one by one to reduce the effect of the engine and the car's top speed, apply brakes (maybe engage the handbrake carefully), exploit uphill roads (lots of them over here) to lose speed, WARN the other drivers, stop at the edge of the road, turn off the engine. I may ruin the engine, but I really don't care if it increases my chances of making it.

The brake pedal got stuck due to a design error and poor attachment to the car mat. This caused the carpet to slide forward, thus preventing the driver from pressing the brake pedal all the way. Unfortunately, this was not the only case, nor the only deaths, that occurred for this same reason.

he is not stepping the accelerator pedal, according to my friend, the incident happen because the pedal stuck and the brake malfunction due to the overused, what does it mean? brake can get weaker if you only step on it for 1 second while accelerating, so if your car keep accelerating without even stepping in the pedal, step and hold the brake, if wont work, keep braking while turning your gear down one per one (manual) if your on automatic, put your car on neutral, that will stop the car from accelerating and slowing down slowly. if you are in these condition, turn on hazard to alert everyone that you have problem, get help while you can, if you came up with intersection,try finding emergency lane or empty lane. try hitting something to help slowing your vehicle, dont care about the damage, care about your life.

I had a runaway gas pedal once (stuck throttle cable) on the highway. It's called "step on brake, pull over, take key out. This was an old Toyota. You can take the key out of the vehicle WHILE DRIVING and it will shut off.

Me being a young and daring kind of girl at the time actually saved my life, as I decided to turn off the ignition!
