Thanks to the updated Edge Browser for the Xbox Series S | X consoles, you can access a vast list of emulators in the browser and you DO NOT need your Xbox to run in developer mode. In this episode we take a closer look at what's possible and how well it performs in practice.

It's really easy to underestimate of the speed of modern CPUs. "If raw power doesn't solve your problem you haven't used enough of it." PS1 emulation via javascript drives home that point rather well. The fact that we have reached the point where interpreted languages can run something as heavy as an emulator is just impressive.

JS is not interpreted anymore for the most part but compiled just in time by browsers. But was is shown here is probably not JS but WASM.
@guspaz
@guspaz 3 жыл бұрын
I think people don't realize that over the years, javascript runtimes switched to just-in-time compilers, and then optimized to asm.js as a compile target for any language, at which point you're not so different from something like the Unity engine which is doing the same thing with C# code using Mono. Beyond that, all major desktop and mobile browsers (including Chrome, which the new Edge is a reskin of) support WebAssembly, you're now running code at near-native speed in browsers. The weak point is still the hardware interfaces, as you can tell from all the sound issues that MVG encountered in this video. At this point, a browser is just a wasm compile target for C/C++ code.
@MrSlowestD16
@MrSlowestD16 3 жыл бұрын
@@derek7808 Sorta, it's still interpreted because the output of JIT is byte-code, much like Java. It's not native CPU binary instructions, so you need a "VM" to execute it. @@guspaz FYI: Edge is not a simple reskin of Chromium. MS Edge adds features from the Legacy Edge and Internet Explorer to its Blink engine: one big one is the scrolling. Try scrolling on Edge in Windows. You will find that no other Chromium browsers scroll this smoothly. Microsoft Edge also integrates the entire internet explorer engine in its chrome, allowing you to use “Internet Explorer Mode”. Finally, Edge serves as Windows 10 and Windows 11’s WebView control, which required deep integration with the OS. So, yeah, MS Edge is not your typical Chromium browser.

@@FirstNameLastName-xe4mx this isn't about high- or low-level programming languages, it all comes to whether the build system can reason ahead about the code or not. In Rust, Go, C++ or Java, compiler has so much information about typing, access, etc. that it can perform optimizations and make simpler machine code. In dynamically typed languages like JS, this all has to be deferred until runtime, because only then the system will know what data types are used. Webasm is like C, it requires many compile-time hints.

What are the bottlenecks you’re seeing in JS? I think “js is slow” is a common talking point but who is actually proving it with benchmarks? In my experience and benchmarking it’s definitely fast enough. Even for emulation as we can clearly see in this video. The more interesting thing about WASM isn’t speed, but convenience of creating a web port. WASM is a compile target for the same source code that the original emulators are often written in, so theoretically the engineers who wrote their emulators in C++ for example could simply change their compile target to WASM and BAM! It should work in the browser, no need to rewrite the thing from the ground up in JS. This is incredible.
@megan_alnico
@megan_alnico 3 жыл бұрын
@@nateadams4770 JavaScript is a dynamically typed interpreted language. Historically dynamically typed languages are difficult to optimize, there's just not a lot for the compiler to reason about beforehand. Combined with the fact that JavaScript is interpreted makes it ill-suited for performance dependent systems. WASM is is an extension of the JavaScript language that adds what is best described as a kind of type safe byte code, very much in the same vein as the byte code used in C# and Java. While not as performant as purely native code, it's still orders of magnitude faster than traditional JavaScript. It just happens to run in the same JavaScript engine and is integrated into most browsers. So what you're seeing in this video is not actually JavaScript proper, it's a special extension to JavaScript facilitates efficient execution. Don't get me wrong the JavaScript interpreter stuff is always getting better but WASM has an architectural advantage.

I'm developing a quite ambitious high-res metroidvania-like game in a web based environment (since it is incredibly easy to deploy to different platforms) however sound popping, as well as short loop breaks can be an issue when starting new sound processes in the browser... However, when you develop a game for scratch with the technology in mind you can circumvent those limitations. That's harder to do in emulation and really it's something that needs to be fixed with the browser environment, or somehow circumvented by the emulator developers themselves.

But a USB 3.0 external drive (just plain USB 3.0 with 5gbps throughput) caps out around 450-480MB/sec depending on the cache of the drive, so it's a wash between using a internal SATA drive and using a external SATA-over-USB drive on XB1 or XS. Once we finally get WebGPU in browsers, higher-tier emulation like GameCube/Wii/PS2 will be within reach, because that will make complex, high performance graphics possible. Currently, the options available for graphics on the web are quite limited, so there's a limit to what's feasible. WebGPU will supercede WebGL, which is the highest performance option for graphics on the web right now. They can be compared similarly to DirectX 12 vs. older DirectX on Windows, Metal vs. OpenGL on Mac, or Vulkan vs. OpenGL.

That's really not their intention though, their intention is simply to provide a capable & performant web browser that gives a normal web experience in line with what users expect from a typical desktop PC and these emulators working at decent speeds is just a side effect of that. If anything this is an advantage to hackers as it provides at lot more potential attack vectors for breaking the system security to run their unsigned code, browser attacks have been successful against some past consoles and is likely why Nintendo & Sony don't give us a web browser on the Switch or PS5 (well PS5 does have a hidden one but it clearly wasn't intended for people use).

The web emulators are almost definitely using WebAssembly as opposed to actual JS, at least for the backend. WASM runs at about 90% the speed of actual assembly so it's not too much of a surprise that you're seeing such good performance on the browser. Even real JS should run pretty fast though, it's only like 2-4x slower than native code on modern engines like V8.

Well its not redundant if you have friends, many xbox games are cross plataform, i use my XGP Ultimate to play on both pc and xbox at same time with my cousin(pratically brother), man its so much fun being able to play games that i like with him like old times next to each other, so as much as people say its redundant, for having both pc and xbox is bless, i like online gaming but classic multiplayer couch gaming is what i love ever since old times and simulating it by having both and being able to play Xbox games at same time on both plataforms with only one time payment is perfect, spcially when local multiplayer is really scarce these days, as the vast majority is online multiplayer for one person per machine only, if you have a friend or partner, make this couch or room multiplayer thing with xbox and pc, its awesome.
THIS is why you NEED an Xbox Series S
