Russian 12ga Slug looks like mini TANK round!

Today we demonstrate some advanced Russian sabot slugs. This is basically a large caliber bullet (13.5 mm) that obtains stability by small fins like a mortar round. We received 7 of these to test out. 6 were loaded with 30 grains of Longshot, and the 7th with 40 grains. Normally, it takes hundreds or even thousands of test shots to determine the correct powder AND the correct quantity to find the "sweet spot" where the slugs perform their best.

Hey hey Jeff!! We have the "Paradox" rifled barrel extension :) Sadly no fully rifled shotguns, unless you have a license for rifles.. As usual I was smiling during most of this video. Fun Fact.. When I shoot at longer ranges with the Saiga 12K, the slugs very often print to the left. Both Poleva 6 and 6U and Brenneke.

I wasn't sure how these would do with a paradox nozzle. It seems most of the time the shots go left more often than to the right no matter what we are shooting and what shotgun we use!

The last two graphs in Russian were comparing the speed drop of the slugs, first the speed at 50 meters and then the speed to distance dependency and the PPD was the fastest of them all.

Thank YOU, Jeff. You're the only channel I actually have the bell alert clicked for. Don't forget, V^2. That's why a 556 is straighter and imparts more force than a 762. You can have 2oz slugs at 800fps, but a single 1oz at 1600fps will impart much more force. Short physics lesson, F=mA. Given that m is a constant mass and A is the acceleration in the negative y-axis of the projectile striking the target we can isolate deceleration as a variable as the rate of change of the velocity of the projectile. Fuck, I'm rambling on here and I've got a few in me. The point is the higher muzzle velocity, the higher the force imparted on the target, exponentially. I love watching you load the hot loads, 40+grain because I know they'll hit like a hammer and fly true like an arrow. If you ever want a short course in kinematic physics, let me know. I'm a graduate student from MIT and can help you from D = vt + 1/2at^2 to fluid dynamics and flow rates. My supersonic fluid dynamics is a bit rusty, but with some simulation we could figure anything out. Yours, Jack

What charts say: 1st one, axis x is "distance, meters", axis y is... I dunno, speed? Deviation?; 2nd one, speed on 50 meters (speed out of the muzzle is 450 meters/s), comparison with other bullets and slugs (including PPSh, Arrow, Poleva-3, etc.), in meters/s; 3rd one, comparison of calculated speed of different kinds of 12 gauge slugs, x is distance in meters, y is speed in meters/s I hope that was helpful.

First chart is rotation speed, revolutions per second. This slug has comparatively low rotation speed because of small fins and overall weight above average.

Jeff you talked about barrel harmonics. I think that might warrant a short video. You could load the same slug with different powder loads and show its effect on the barrel of the shotgun in slow motion. Not sure if it would be really visible though. But I think that would be neat to see if possible.

I feel like the fins are silly on these given the supersonic shock front would prevent them from doing jack. But the sabot design and gas seal is spot on. Feel like many of the previous slugs that used sabots would have worked much more effectively if they had a similarly contoured design with a lip to propel the slug direct or from rear or the center of mass for longer slugs. Attempting to transfer all that force through the rear of the stabilizer or rear of the longer projectile i feel is the chief flaw in many other slugs designs. Seems unlikely you could build a long slug or stabilizer rigid enough to not fail, warp, or go cockeyed under the forces of acceleration otherwise. Feel like this is the key design feature that makes these slugs so rock stable. :-) Great slugs. Keep up the good work Jeff.

Just a side note a 40s&w round will split that polycarbonate piece. They are very brittle and to test it for ballistics it needs to be in a much larger sheet and secured. Love the slo mo

10:28 - some of the foster slug's energy got dumped into angular momentum to rotate the chair, doug, shades, hat. the PPD hit dead center so the force torqued everything straight back. also, it's easier to lose hat and shades when you're nodding than shaking your head. I agree the footage shows the PPD carried much more energy

i think the reason why they shot low is that the slug traveled so fast the faster a round goes, the less time there is for the recoil to make the muzzle rise, that is also why .44 specials tend to shoot higher than magnums.

Sabot projectiles in tanks are usually fired from smoothbore barrels since spin stabilization doesn't work for projectiles with their thin length compared to more squat full caliber AP

Jeff we shoot deer at a hundred yards or more with Foster slugs on a regular basis through smooth boreof course we use a lot of Ithaca model 37 what are different than a regular smooth bore barrel so far the farthest shot was with a 20 gauge with Ithaca Patton smooth bore barrel at 225 yards
