Hey Ben, been living in KK as a British expat for 15 years now, lived in Kl previously. Best thing about KK would be that we get a breeze most days as Kl gets a bit too sticky, Airport nice and close to the city, cost of living i would say is 20/30% cheaper in KK overall if you live here long term. Hope it helps.

I believe you've made your decision. The cities you mentioned are exactly what they are. No cap, man. If you have a one-year visa, you can stay for 6 months in KK and another 6 months in KL. Get a 6-month housing contract for each city. KK is a good destination; as a KL resident and Malaysian, I enjoy the food and people there. They are nice and willing to diversify. The feedback of your evaluations shows in the number of videos that you have taken in KK and the amount of tourists visiting the city. The cost of living may be equivalent to KL, but the quality of your life balance is priceless. As long as you can wake up in the morning smiling, the food is good, and people welcome you...grab it! You are a good man, just put a bit more on planning and I wish you have a good life in Malaysia.

I heard you Ben, i heard you. Now i know your living requirements. I can advice you where to live in KK with affordable quality groceries (beef). Full of greenery, gym over the sunset view. I agreed with you that KL has everything that fits into your criteria. But things that could sway you or anyone over to KK have to be: - Definitely a beach island person with hilly dense forest at the backdrop. The sun rises from the Mt. Kinabalu and sets over the horizon; - Affordable and fresh seafood. Nothing else. Ben, i suggest you a few places must visit in Sabah when you come over for the second time. - Mt. Kinabalu National Park (stay at Mesilau budget hotel / lodge / homestay) / Poring Hot Spring (canopy walk) / Consider Desa dairy farm if you are in to it. Best to travel with motorbike / car rental because Grab seems not possible. - Best islands hopping activity is in Semporna if you plan to visit. If not, do it in KK - the opposite islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. - Mari-Mari Cultural Village 1/2 day tour. Experience and understand the 5 largest ethnic group in Sabah. This is highly recommended for foreigners. Even myself as a Sabahan Malaysian born Chinese, i love how they set up the mock villages along the Kiansom river where the waterfall just a stone throw away. - Sandakan Sepilok Rainforest Centre / Sun Bear / Orang Utan Conservation Centre. Witness the virgin jungle surrounded by giant trees tall like NY concrete jungle (listen to Alicia keys's New York) while walking on the suspended bridge connected between Watch Towers. This is one of the best / heart of oldest tropical rainforest (140 millions). This is what people come to Borneo for. - I know you missed Merdeka Day on 31st August. No worries, Come to KK to celebrate the real - Malaysia Day on 16th September when Malaya (Peninsula), Sarawak, Sabah & Singapore (quitted after 2 years) formed the Federation Of Malaysia. Prime Minister will be here to celebrate.

All good suggestions. But judging from Ben's contents, I don't think he will go beyond urban area (concrete jungle). So jungles, parks, lodging, island, sea, sun, mosquitoes, forest etc are out of his interest.

I love both, KK and KL. I’m mainly in KL. If I need to take a break, I would go to the east coast like Cherating, Kuantan and the islands. You should try visiting the east coast before deciding. I’m not sure if you can get fresh meat easily but can do some research. Seafood is no problem. But everytime I plan to go anywhere, I would end up in Sabah haha! KK is like my 2nd home. I would love to move back to KK. For now, I stick to KL mainly due to work. Retiring in KK might be my future plan. Definitely need a car in Sabah though. Difficult decision, all the best.

Hi Ben, you said you were wondering whether you should visit Sibu or Miri. I would say go by all means. Maybe get a cheap flight to either Sibu or Miri. Then use a bus to to to either town. There's always something special about small towns in Sarawak, especially the people, certainly more friendly than city folks.

Seeing that you never went out of urban areas, it easy to understand why you prefer KL over Kota Kinabalu. You are a city kind of person and that is OK. You need the busy lifestyle, the easy way to find food and all the comfort and amenities. I don't think you will thrive in Sabah (beyond Kota Kinabalu). I don't think the jungles, mosquitoes and tropics of Borneo suit you. But that is OK, it's your preference. Keep on enjoying your life, wherever you are. And we will be watching.

Could be hard for Ben to meet the requirements of an digital nomad visa in Malaysia. Things like project contracts, banking statements for the last 3 month and on top of that a full cover health insurance. And in case of immigration, the 90 day visa free stay is within any given 180 day period. Means, they can kick him quickly out or refuse to let him in. With the new electronic registration on the airports they are well in the know whats going on. Thailand will implement it soon and than every kind of border-run will turn into a gamble.

Living in PJ or Damansara near a metro station gives you the best of both worlds. You can easily hop on a train to the CBD, but still enjoy the laid-back, local vibe of PJ, which feels more down-to-earth compared to KL’s city center. There’s a large English-speaking community, so you can easily connect with real locals. Plus, you’re close to cool spots like Bangsar, TTDI, Mont Kiara, and Hartamas. If you’re living in the north of PJ near Desa Park City, you can visit there on a regular basis, you’ll love the lake, parks, and well-maintained facilities-it’s a very walkable neighborhood.

For foreigners that have been to Sabah for the first time, would say Sabah is different and unique. As local, i would say the same, but Sabah has good and bad side. It's already 2024, and we still have the same problems with bad roads, water and power disruption, illegals, too much trash at the river and seas, public transport, etc. Sabahan has been fighting for changes and improvement for years. Most foreigners won't see this problem but Sabah is not a cheap place to live...prices of goods are much more expensive than other parts of malaysia 😅

If you want to make money as an influencer, making videos will give you more views instead of the two Bornean States. Kuching is getting the ART soon but Kuching still wouldn't get you as many views as KL. So, best to stick to KL. Sabah & Sarawak get many tourists nevertheless. In fact... Sabah contributes the largest tourism income to national coffer despite the fact that influencers seems to say they don't get as many views as in KL. We were in Miri last July. We used Grab and Maxim. It's walkable. In fact Miri has very nice sidewalks. As for Kuching... you were only stuck in only one part of the city. Remember, Kuching is a very spread out city merging with Kota Samarahan.
