What the fun in fishing like this is I have no idea, but this all too common here at Oak Orchard and Burt Dam. I guess people don't think that salmon can be caught, but if people would actually fish here it would be the best place to wet a line after the fish stack up here. After stepping in this mess and fair hooking a king on a gulp minnow, It tangled some peoples lines and made for an uproar. Funny you get yelled at for fair hooking a fish here.

I agree snagging isn't fishing. Its just tiring. I am going to go snagging in a landlocked lake where salmon are stocked. Snagging is allowed at the certain times in this lake and the salmon are not biting anymore, this is the time they are about to die. If people didn't go snagging, all the salmon would literally just sit and rot in the lake. It's a good way to get a lot of food.

First off I am an avid hunter and love to fish and always follow the rules and believe in obeying the law of the land even if I don’t agree with it, but who made you the decider of what is and what isn’t fishing!? How arrogant of you to think that putting a hook in an animals mouth and dragging it out of the environment which it can breathe is any better than snagging it, and do t tell me fish don’t feel pain, yeah right, keep telling yourself that if it makes you sleep better at night, you simply have been convinced of one more thing by our government and now you’re on your high horse regurgitating it trying to make other people feel dumb because they are willing to risk getting caught. If you wanted to eat that fish and didn’t feel like buying it, do you think you’d be worried about the method you caught it, or better yet if you were a Native American a hundred years ago catching fish for your family to eat and you snagged ten huge salmon for the day, do you think any dipshit like yourself would have the audacity to say “ that is clearly not fishing” no. I think what you simply mean to say is that is not legal, but it is clearly a form of fishing, don’t get butt hurt cause they are willing to break the law to eat, they’ll have to face the consequences if they get caught. You’re just a nosy snitch, go mind your business.

To keep them fish no matter how you hook them can easily feed your family with the limit you catch. Its not about being tree huggers, left or right wing, or any of that stuff. The concept of snagging is outdated, and unacceptable compared to normal sportsmanlike action. If snagging was legalized, it would make fishing too easy, and have the same affect as netting, which is being able to quickly decline a run of fish. Its not that hard to hook a fish in the mouth, and not look like a jackass whipping your rod around, not even giving the fish a chance to run from your hook flying towards them at god knows how fast. Stop being "that guy," and catch fish like most people, not a scumbag.

I'm pretty sure salmon stop eating up to 6 months before they spawn. Whats better; A fish rotting at the bottom of a dam (that is there to provide you power), or a fish in the bottom of someones pan? It may not be that sporting but at least they're harvesting.
@adamg5829
@adamg5829 9 жыл бұрын
I agree that if they've spawned and they will die anyway, then its not doing much harm to keep some anyway. Snagging is shitty but its the only way to catch them once they are in full spawn since they don't eat or hardly at all. But in this video the guy released the fucking salmon, where's the sport in that? took him all of 30 seconds to catch a 35 inch salmon with a foul hook and then released it, why not just keep it like you said and eat it? I hear they don't taste great post spawn because they are devoid of nutrients but do something. Put it out of its misery and eat it or feed it to your animals. Don't send it back in to live for a while longer now with a serious wound that could get infected.

I have snagged a salmon in Alaska before and I don't really count it because later in my trip i caught five salmon on a spoon in the mouth. I don't have a problem with snagging as long as you release a few non spawned out salmon here and there and keep a few but if a person keeps every salmon they catch/snag I don't think that's right. The guy in the video who released it is not bad for snagging it in my opinion. If he were to keep every salmon he caught/snagged I think that is just to much for you/your family to consume and not let them spawn.

Dead carcasses are not pollution. Their dead bodies will provide food and nutrients to insect larvae in rivers and lakes. The insect larvae provide food for other fish species as well as the salmon smolts that hatch in the spring. Animals will drag dead fish into the woods for a meal and the leftover fish will fertilize the soil for the stream side trees and vegetation that will provide shade and cover for the next generation of salmon.There is no waste in nature.

FYI before salmon die they do something called reproduce. So if you wanna go on the fact that they are gonna die and we might as well catch every single one, then there would be no reproduction and no population left. Sure in some places the runs are stocked, but almost all stocked rivers support some degree of natural reproduction. And rotting salmon carcases is part of the life cycle, as said by mojo. They take all the nutrients from the system to grow, and their death and decomposition is their way of giving back the energy and nutrients

What all you nay sayers are not realizing is that DURING the spawn, most adult Salmon actually go through a physical change where their internal organs start shutting down, their mouths form big hooks, and they dont hunt for food. They turn bright red over most of their body and the physical changes mean it is the end of their life cycle. They become very aggressive and then they die. Looking at the size of the water way in the video, it looks fairly deep with a good current. Where I'm from, MOST rivers are barely even the size of a 2 lane road and less than 4 or 5 ft deep in the pockets. Few areas are any larger. If we relied on conventional means we would fail because they aren't interested in food- they are interested in spawning BEFORE they die. It may not be the prettiest way to catch a fish, but if it's the spawn time, its the ONLY time it should be aloud, and ONLY in certain areas. Besides- it's all about luck if you snag one cause you are casting blind without anything to attract them. Dragging a bare hook along and actually hitting one is not as easy as you'd think it is.

You have to be the biggest idiot I've ever seen form a sentence in my entire life. THEY'RE SPAWNING! THEY DON'T WANT TO EAT! THAT DOESN'T GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO FORCE FEED THEM WITH YOUR MEAT STICK! No shit they're not hungry, you mo-mo! "But if it's the spawn time, its the ONLY time it should be aloud, and ONLY in certain areas." I can't believe you justify this shit! You need to quit your job and go work on a sein trawler, b/c the oceans are just teaming with fish right now! In the future, when salmon and trout populations have been nearly extirpated due in part to that mentality, my hope is that the law can cut off one of the hands that you use to snag your fish. They can't use their mouths for physiological reasons, then we'll remove one of your hands and let you snag all you want. You have no respect for the process, and no respect for the fish, which means you should have to give something back for such a narrow, idiotic mentality. Oh, and I'm sure it's not just salmon you're ripping. Browns and steelies are probably getting the old 1-2-PULL from you as well. Die off.

Tell me, are you a vegetarian? you ever seen what they do to all those higher form animals you meat eaters eat? You think snagging fish from a river is even remotely that bad? You need to go find a big ol bong, and take a big ol hit, and find a tree to hug.

I can understand snag fishing once a salmon's life is used up. In one sentence i hate the idea, but if they're going to die off anyway then whats the harm in catching some for food? But thats where it ends for me, if you're there for the "sport" of snag fishing then you're missing a major piece of what makes fishing fun. I can't respect people who snag fish for sport, even if the fish will die soon, its just a lousy way to say you caught a fish. If you want to get a meal out of it well i can at least understand that, i don't like it but i can understand. If i catch a fish from a foul hook, i don't count it as a catch and i won't keep it. Its illegal to keep a foul hooked Steelhead in PA unless they are locked into a creek/river and are going to die anyway, thats the only exception PA will make to the rule and i'm glad they have it that way. Now i'd imagine these fish are nearing their deaths, but for goodness sake keep the fucking things, the least you can do with it after damaging it with an intentional foul hook is kill it and eat it or feed it to your pets or something.

I've seen people walk into the middle of a stream while a snaghole is fighting a fish and take their cigar or cigarette and singe their line. It's such a moment of relief. The old mentality was, "what's the problem with snagging, everybody does it," but it's change more and more to, "If I see somebody snagging fish, I'm gonna put down this rod and get weird on them." It's changed a lot in 30 years, which is awesome, but there are still leeches and maggots roaming the banks who've never been taught to respect the spawn process. My old man told me this about snagging, "if you can't get 'em to bite, then you haven't earned the fight." A-f*ckin-men.

Ok just to clear everything up for everyone being ignorant this is very illegal I fish here all the time and this kind of stuff ruins it for the people that are doing things legally it's not very hard to get a salmon to bite you just need to do a little research and apply while out on the stream the dec around here take it very seriously for a good reason

snaging is for people that can't fish. and why keep dark fish.
@scoutrecon78

They snag because the fish are at the end of their life cycle after spawning. and the salmon are dark because of the river.

They are dark because they are literally slowly decaying...its part of the salmon life cycle...they spawn and die...has nothing to do with the water

Snagging is a pathetic way to play fish, that's just a forgone conclusion nowadays with our rocket science rods, mil spec reels, and fluorocarbon lines - let alone barbs on hooks. The real knobs in the video are the guys 40' up the opposite bank who are fishing - what do they think is going to happen once a fish runs over their lines? Despite fish snagging being an acceptable thing once when I was a lot younger, I love how my local hole that makes kings accessible to the average person - the regulars will run you out if you snag & try to keep it, the verbal assault will leave you pushed to the edge of the hole & even then you'll be lucky if you ever come back and not hazed again. Buying a fishing license doesn't give you a right to reap fish by all means available - 99% of locals here fish that way & you're fooling yourself if you think you won't get dimed out when the DFW guy rolls through.
