I was accused of being a McDojo once online. Because some BJJ guy couldn't understand how a martial arts school owner can teach 8 different styles all under one roof. He said I must be a McDojo. Then another commenter mentioned that he had attended my school and loved it. He stood up for me stating that you need to attend the school before you accuse them. He stated that I hired 11 different people and had 8 different styles, meaning that the other instructors taught 6 of the 8 styles. I love how people will assume without any knowledge. I love your channel and what you do. Thanks.

The self immolation photos are probably referring to the monks who protested Vietnam. Those guys did not sit in silence the whole time, there’s video out there that shows the whole process and they end up rolling around screaming in pain. Still gotta give those guys props for being so committed to a cause they were willing to do that.

Judo boy that died: this happened in Taiwan. The instructor appears to have no affiliation with any governing body or the international judo federation. Do you do diligence parents. Make sure those teaching your children are certified coaches with national governing bodies with current background checks.

It's amazing how many times you are so correct with everything you say. The first martial arts class I ever attended was a Gracie Brothers jujitsu and salt lake City. For some reason I was not impressed, but I found my home in hapkido after visiting about six schools.

Frank Dux is almost certainly the greatest martial arts fraud of all time. I’ll cite a # of examples: 1. He never served in Viet Nam; he enlisted after the war was over. 2. He was never deployed overseas-ever. 3. He received no specialized training-ever. 4. Dux would have us believe that the Government bypassed all the US special forces in order to send him, at 19, on secret missions, I guess due to his Ninja training. 5. He was never awarded the Medal of Honor, or any other medals, as per his official military records. 6. There’s a picture of him wearing the Army Medal of Honor. Dux, in fact, served just over four months active duty in the Marine Corps., not the Army. He claimed the military never explained why. 7. The FBI actually wanted the US Attorney to charge ‘The Secret Man’ with wearing fake military medals, which is against the US Code, aka Stolen Valor. 8. He was, however, referred to a psychological evaluation, for expressing ‘flighty & disconnected’ ideas. BINGO. 9. He claims to have been appointed as a Russian Army Captain. Say what? 10. He never fought in the Kumite, but, probably, has some, minimal, martial arts training. 11. In fact, the Kumite never even happened in the Bahamas, according to Bahamas’ Minister of Sports. 12. The video of him ‘fighting’ in the Kumite was actually a French martial artist named Philippe Cadoret, competing in Taiwan, in 1986. 13. Mr. Cadoret’s son contacted Dux and threatened a lawsuit, unless he immediately removed the videos, which he did. 14. He claimed to have sold the sword, which he won at the Kumite, in order to rescue a boatload of children, who had been abducted by pirates. Yes, he actually said this! 15. The International Fighting Arts Association, which allegedly sponsored the Kumite, listed Dux’ home address as its international HQ. 16. His Kumite trophy was purchased at a local CA store. 17. No, Dux is not a Ninja. 18. Two friends, Richard Robinson, and Richard Bender, whom Dux asked to lie about having witnessed Dux’ fight in the Kumite, subsequently admitted lying for him and having fabricated the entire story. 19. He defeated 66 people in a tug of war! Yes, he actually said this! 20. He bilked hundreds, possibly thousands, of students out of their hard - earned money. NOT OK. 21. He never worked for the CIA, either directly or indirectly. 22. He claimed to have been personally recruited by the CIA Director, William Casey, in a bathroom. Yes, he actually said this. 23. Dux claims to have been a hit man for the CIA. If even remotely true, he’d never, ever disclose such. 24. Both the CIA & two US Army Generals, actually publicly called out his BS, which is rare for them to do. 25. The ‘Secret Man’, if real, would never publicly discuss his secret agent, black ops assignments. 26. His stories continually change; lies beget lies. 27. Dux has NO background in intelligence. Zip. 28. He claimed to have been gouged by a bayonet in the stomach on one such mission. 29. He claimed to have been recruited to assassinate Steven Segal. Say what, again? 30. His instructor never existed. He got the name Tiger Tanaka form a James Bond movie ‘You Only Live Twice’. 31. Zane Frazier, a legitimate MMA fighter and a real martial artist, body slammed Dux over a dispute regarding money. 32. Dux sued Jean Claude Van Damn, the LA Times, and Soldier of Fortune magazine for liable - all unsuccessful, frivolous lawsuits. 33. He’s fairly intelligent and is a very convincing liar. 34. Dux now wears dark glasses and the right side of his mouth droops. I feel he probably suffered a stroke. For this, I truly feel sorry for him. But he’s an ultimately a FRAUD & a LIAR.

I totally had an instructor get mad at me for working out with a friend that was an mma fighter said he didn't want me doing that....same guy also I know at least twice withdrew monthly dues from students that didn't renew their contract. when they called him on it he's like well you've been regularly coming so I just assumed. once they said no I'm not coming back that's why I didn't renew, he gave their money back. I wonder how many other times he's tried without getting called

I think it would be hilarious if Dillman legitimately thought he had super powers because all of his "students" were just playing a giant practical joke on him. They just played along with it and he thought it was real.

I don't think they play along. I think it's more likely hypnotism. It's kinda ironic because hypnotism is a legitimate technique in ninjutstu (as in what's recorded in the bansenshukai. )

as an indonesian i want to clarify nowadays nobody knows what the hell is tenaga dalam we learn martial arts that always works like karate, taekwondo, silat etc and also tenaga dalam should not be used as martial arts, what tenaga dalam is it is a strength of a person's willpower to stand against a bad thing, hindus in bali understand it as like some sort of energy that the gods gave us which qualifies how holy we are and wether if we are a good person or bad person and wether if they can withstand the evils of the world and not some kung fu Chi energy bullshit

the guy from Martial Arts Journey goes into the psychology of his aikido training and how when a visiting master came to his dojo he had to make a decision whether or not to go along with the plan. You can fake sparring if there's a cause and effect that you know you're supposed to do. Even if you know it's not real when you get on the mat you can't help yourself but go back to what you've been taught.

I do feel for some of the people that get tricked by martial arts charlatan and belt factories. It instills a false sense of security in some, who think that what they are learning will help them in a self defense situation. Some of these mcdojos have young friggin 12 year olds as black belts.

Wonderfully insightful discussion, with a lot of valid points, while I don't fully agree with every single thing discussed, this still gave a lot of food for thought with those that may not have much experience in martial arts as a whole.

Rob is right, I used to "train" in kenpo karate with a good "community" but as soon as my instructor started drinking the Kool aid, my brother and I left. It's been three years since then and I haven't heard from my former instructor since.

To be fair, let's give em the benefit of the doubt and say the techniques are possible/plausible, how many individuals do you think can honestly work their bioelectric circuitry to such a degree that they would be able to generate force/energy using only the power of their thought/intention to drive the 'muscle' for specified energy expenditure and to such a degree of power and accuracy that they could do damage to a specified target? Any person that saw someone legitimately demonstrating such would need decades of real training from a legit instructor but most would probably think they could do it on their own w/o understanding, and the rest would be con men playing of the legitimacy of that one in a billion with that kind of control and innerstanding. It's not something you would be able to pick up in a couple of years of tutelage, especially under someone that doesn't understand the techs. themselves. Energy manipulation is a basic concept in all martial arts, but having a inhuman sense of the acute instincts required for something like that is in the astronomically low chances at our current understanding of our own circuity. We don't even have a full grasp of the electrical inputs of our neurons to our muscle fibers that are used to generate movement. I've been to a couple mcdojos myself. They have decent workout routines, and their marketing is to notch, but that's usually about it. If they can't spar, they definitely won't know anything more than just a few basic concepts.

This was a wonderful pod cast. One of my friends and BJJ training partners was one of the founding members of the dog brothers stick fighting organization in the 80’s. What’s funny is stick fighting got me into martial arts in 1999. Now I only care about BJJ. Anyways I asked Eric about why and how dog brothers was started the way it was. He said that when he started Kali in the late 70’s early 80’s they would overly pad up at these competitions. They padded up because Kali was “So dangerous and deadly” that’s why this crazy amount of pads were put on. He said he and 2 other guys just stopped doing the pads, and only wore a fencing mask and cut up hockey gloves. Literally nothing else. Shorts and maybe a cup. He throw out all of the BS movements and questionable techniques. They beat the ever loving crap out of each other with sticks and guess what, no one died and only some stitches and some casts were needed over the course of 30+ years. His whole martial arts experience is a on going case study. Today he is a 64 year old beast of a human being, and, I believe, he received his BJJ purple belt from Rigan Machado in 1995. My point is everyone wants to believe that their hands are lethal weapons, their wooden staff is a death bringer to anyone that touches it, they want to believe that the martial art they train is so absolutely devastating they must hold back for the benefit of their opponent or training partner. Eric didn’t fall for the BS and actually figured out what really worked and what didn’t work. He had a whip expert that felt his whip would be absolutely devastating to an opponent. They legitimately tested it. Eric said the 10 ft and 6 ft whip was not an issue, but the 3 ft whip was a problem. They both learned somethings that day.

I'm in Alaska the first martial arts class as soon as he talked to move the next day when you went into class he decided to completely different and you never learned the movie was supposed to be practice with him for 6 years and and it was only a hapkido class and the farthest I got with a purple so obviously he was just BS in you and most of time he wouldn't even show up to class matter fact the last class I was in with him he had somebody else teach your class and then take him a video so he could write the test and see if you pass the second school I was in I did taekwondo and hapkido they would teach you a move and then they wouldn't change the move but they would teach you a move that you knew was complete vs in real-world if you tried this it wouldn't work at all they would laugh at you he had a master that was working with him like his second-in-charge and some of the students refuse to come to class if that one was there because as soon as those young ladies hitl like 13 he wouldn't stop trying to trying to well they would see that he was there they would show up expecting him not to be there and when they saw him there they would turn around and walk out as soon as they got there and that same one was hanging out with some of the other students at a barbecue and there was a student there that was not female but underage he pressured him to drink and was I am your master you have to and the kid didn't want to and he's like you have to because I'm the master and I told you to his mom found out about it had him arrested had a restraining order put on him and press charges I would not let him return to class as long as that one was there and the one who owned and ran the school told the one that was doing leaves things that he would find somebody and pay them off get them out of it and cover it up and nobody would know about it he told him this while me and another student were there that's why I don't talk to that other student he just kind of blew it on the road like it's no big deal it's not my place to do something about it so I'm not going to do anything I'm like well if you don't I will and I'll beat all of you down don't care and the master that owned and run that school was supposed to retire a year or two later and he still running at school and probably around those messed-up individuals to continue what they were doing and act like it's no big deal he's had that school for like 30 or 40 years something like that but nobody knows about it so it's no big deal honesty I'd like to burn down with everybody because when somebody does something like that and everybody goes over everybody knows about it so it's no big deal if you don't get something done with that problem and you just let it continue but everybody knows about it so hopefully no one goes there well we said some about it but nobody I should anything so it's all good but they do know that's not how you solve a problem
