I once saw a film about a prestigious dog show which was won by a shih-tzu (a tiny thing that looked very much like a mop). Immediately afterwards, the owner placed the dog on a huge block of ice and explained this was necessary because the dog was prone to overheating after exertion - the"exertion" in this case being strolling around the hall a few times before the judges. And this poor, basically unviable creature was awarded the main prize, setting an example for other breeders to follow.

I had one. She was a sweetheart, but was abused in a puppy mill and was terrified of men. It took me a year to get her to fully trust me, and from then on, we were inseparable. The only person she ever attacked was a guy in cowboy boots messing with her. The poor dear broke her teeth on that tough leather, so the vet had to pull them all out. The irony is that both the dachshund and the chihuahua are examples of dogs that were bred for functionality. Dachshunds were bred for hunting animals that lived in tunnels (I forget which animal specifically) and chihuahuas were bred to be _living hot water bottles._ Of course, they're so neurotic that I can't imagine them actually working out well that way, but there was an attempt.

Dachshunds looked *very* different when they actually hunted badgers. Look up some historical photos. Now that they no longer do anything useful, the legs have got shorter, the backs longer, and the heads narrower and weaker. Similarly, the land race breed that eventually became chihuahuas looked very different - they were much larger, had deer shaped heads (not the ridiculous "apple head" they now have) and longer snouts

My point was that those unique features were not created at random. Working dachshunds did still have stubby legs and long bodies. It's just that their legs were not _as_ stubby and their bodies not _as_ long. To be clear, I'm not a fan of the direction that former working breeds have gone. Breed standards put forth by the AKC in particular are a disaster. I think they should maintain the working dog standards that they had and the focus should not be on exaggerating those standards, but rather on improving their health and lessening genetic illnesses. My point was merely to correct the misconception that certain breeds exist solely for the lulz. As for the chihuahua, there are records of them going back at least two hundred years, as well as a description of small dogs being in Aztec markets from a letter from 1520. As for the "land race breed," if you're referring to the Xoloitzcuintle, the chihuahua is not descended from that. They're both descended from the small dog mentioned in that letter. Xoloitzcuintles were bred to be larger, while retaining the original breed's hairless trait while chihuahuas either kept the size or got smaller, but lost the hairless trait. Again, though, the fact that "deer head" chihuahuas are considered a fault is stupid. 99% sure the "apple head" comes with health issues and should be considered the fault.

Yeah this kinda seemed poorly researched. Some of the origins of the breeds had "reasons" outside of just looking appealing. Tbh dogs aren't the only organisms that have been bred to incredibly unnatural standards. Corn, strawberries, apples, avocados, wheat, etc etc. Are all so different from their native ancestors. Our modern day forms are much bigger, have a higher sugar content, and tend to produce fleshier fruits. Is it unnatural? Yes. Would they survive in nature? Most wouldn't or they'd began to adapt and change. Is it good? Not always. Some of these organisms will have a lower quality of life. But is it bad? Not always. Some of these species are more drought or disease tolerant. Selective breeding isn't always a bad thing but it isnt inherently great either.

DesuNinjas Yeah. If I ever see a small dog charging at me, I make myself look as large as possible and since I'm very good at imitating animal calls, I use my most threatening bark. It makes them stop in their tracks. Even works on larger dogs. Body language and confidence is everything. Flailing or swinging a purse around makes you look like a prey animal so you have stay rather still and stay very calm. It does depend on whether the dog is insecure aggressive, fearful aggressive, dominant aggressive, territorial aggressive, or actually red zone aggressive. Red zone aggressive dogs are those who actually charge at people or animals who are doing absolutely nothing. Insecure aggressive dogs are those who will mock charge and bark furiously but not really make contact. Fearful aggressive dogs are those who attack when something or someone which scares them invades their personal space. Dominant aggressive dogs are those who've become dominant over their owners and will attack their owners if the owner doesn't know what they're doing and tries to make the dog do something. Territorial aggressive dogs are the most common and will bark at, mock charge, or attack anyone of thing that enters their territory that the dog views as an intruder. Territorial aggressive dogs also tend to be dominant dogs and will protect their owners to the point of being possessive. It's important to note that a dog can only be considered dominant if the owner has little to no control over it. It's also important to note that a dogs behavior is a direct result of how its owner treats and trains it. There are no bad dogs, only bad owners. I HATE that. There's a difference between a chonky cat and a fat cat. Imo, a "chonky" cat is just a big cat. My cat weighed 15 lbs at her heaviest, but she's just a big cat. She's not fat, she's just long and tall and muscular. She's indoor/outdoor so she gets a lot of exercise (not saying you should let cats outside, her situation was very specific, most cats can't survive outside) and she eats a decent amount. She has access to food all the time but she's good about not eating until she bursts. Some cats lack the self-control to have food out all the time. Some cats need mealtimes so they don't eat themselves to death. Some cats need walks and long play sessions to stay active and not get obese. Obese cats are miserable. It's torture on their joints and they can't do normal cat things. Nothing cute about a dying cat.

Hard agree on Chihuahuas… I had one, my Princess Maiya who was a real Mexican chihuahua and had long hair, healthy features and was really chill and adventurous. Every “purebred chihuahua” or the stupid flavors like teacup or apple head or whatever the fuck.. those are the monsters! They have all kinds of issues! My princess had evolutionary reasons for all of her cuteness and that’s why I loved her. He had a furry tummy and paws to protect from hot sand, and her fur repelled sand and dirt like magic! She was the most chill homie I’ve ever had and everyone who owned a chihuahua would be like “She’s not a chihuahua, is she?!” and I’m like… yeah, just not a fucked up inbred one. She’s a dog from chihuahua Mexico, not some wolf midget with the rage virus! Damn… My sister payed a ton for a special chihuahua to match her Rottweiler and that dog is fat, angry, refuses to ever listen, she’s missing half her teeth and going blind, she honks and spazzes out all the time, and her neck is fatter than her head so she slips out of her leash. No she’s not over fed or overweight, she’s just built like a furry snowman or football… she has a tiny head and big body.. lmao she’s so ugly and miserable but she’s my little buddy. She’s the family cockroach. Every other dog has passed away and she’s the last one standing, a grumpy old bitch who refuses to listen or move when told. My Maiya was perfectly healthy until 15 and got sick and passed away within a day… it happened so fast and it was a rare occurrence. My buster, Basset Beagle got cancer but lived a long happy and healthy life until the end. Dolce (the old half dead one) is still around but her big brother Diesel the Rott had that stomach flip thing from choking on something and he died years ago… Dolce had another brother Danny Doodle who was a beaten and abused mini pin my sister stole and he had brain damage and eventually he got outside and got hit by a car… :( So yeah, Dolce and Me are the last ones standing. I have lung cancer so we just lay around miserable together and wait to see who dies first… haha I know it’s fucked up, but that’s life.

Dachshunds were bred for functionality not just cuteness fyi. They went in small tunnels hunting for small prey. Nowadays we have merle dachshunds n shit being bred only for cuteness but original dachshunds had a purpose and are healthy.
