She was mimicking New Order Amish so some of the rules are different. A lot of Gen Z Amish (those in their 20s) do have secret phones too but it's usually the ones who are planning to leave so they can connect with those on the outside so they have somewhere to go, as leaving the Amish is permanent and their family will never speak to them again. Men who own construction businesses have phones as well. The rule is it just can't be inside the home. Modern kitchens are allowed if they sell food as that's a federal law that religion cannot bypass. Some communities will use this so they all can have modern kitchens, one neighbor selling pies and pastries, another with dairy products etc. Obviously she was still lying but not everything she was doing was rule breaking and a lot of what she saying was plausible, just a really weird thing to lie about

You can still struggle with school work and “complain” while also being sad that someone else cannot go to school. But that’s besides the point.) @leileyaravencroft6 ай бұрын
I have heard it varies on the Amish community. The core values are the same but there are some things that are different such as I remember hearing that in one Amish community they did have a working phone and a car. If memory serves, both were acquired because of an insane emergency that occurred that resulted in the death of a beloved member. I think they weren’t able to get a buggy because the ones that were there (I believe it was about two or three) were out to sell their wares and they didn’t have any phones so that member had passed on. They prayed on it for some time before the Elders decided on one phone and one car for emergency purposes only. Both the phone and the keys to the car were being held by the Elders.
@lumini31726 ай бұрын
I’m ex-Amish and yes, as the person above stated it does vary among the communities. Some examples being: No electricity is usually a base rule, but even then some communities allow things such as battery powered items and solar power. Music is allowed in most communities, as long as it isn’t “secular”. Some communities have lesser dress codes while some are very specific and strict-my mom was given a stack of papers going over what was and wasn’t allowed in the church her and my father attended. Makeup is one of the only ones that I think every community frowns on. So yes, it does vary. But it does not take a genius to see that Sarah is a fake. Even if she were Mennonite she would be suspicious but Amish? There’s no way she wouldn’t have been excommunicated by now.
@anactualprayingmantis50546 ай бұрын
@@lumini3172 I guess the community in my area has more strict rules. There is a fairly large community here. They aren't allowed to listen to any music. They won't even go to a hospital unless someone is literally dying. Obviously some of them break the rules. I know some of them have secret bathrooms with running water in them. Which is something they don't agree with here.
@lumini31726 ай бұрын
@@anactualprayingmantis5054 That’s understandable. Some communities are far more strict than others, that’s for sure. Some of the rules that Amish communities have are so wild, though, because on top of not allowing running water I know some that don’t allow bikes either. The reasoning is “it would be too easy for you to go somewhere you shouldn’t,” as if you couldn’t go to that same place with a horse and buggy lol And of course the rules don’t stop people from doing the “bad things” in secret. It’s interesting hearing my parents telling stories of their own rebellions. My dad once got caught with a cellphone and my mom was caught with a Polaroid camera. The phone, camera, and pictures from the camera had to be destroyed. My mom never stopped feeling heartbroken over the pictures she lost :(

In ex-Amish with lots of Amish relatives and even my conservative, Amish-apologist family will admit that there’s a number of issues in the communities regarding abuse of…well, any living being, really. Children, women, horses, dogs, cats, cows, wildlife, it does not matter. If it’s breathing then it’s at risk of being abused by the Amish. This is not to say that every Amish person is a horrible, abusive creature. There are some great ones out there. It’s just a simple fact that the large majority of the communities see animals as nothing more than expendable tools. The kids can be just as bad as they’re raised to believe the same thing. I’ve seen lame horses still being used to pull buggies and do farm work. I’ve seen kids throw kittens by their tails. I’ve seen dogs kept in tiny cages covered in their own feces. I’ve seen carts with far too many kids in it beating the crap out of the pony struggling to pull it. Once an animal is too old or sick/injured to continue their job or the owner gets a new one that they can abuse instead, they’re either shot, abandoned, or taken to the nearest auction/kill buyer. Very, very few get to have retirement after being worked into the ground. As for women and children, well, it really isn’t rocket science. They’re practically still seen as property. They’re beaten and treated almost as bad as the animals (sometimes just as bad). It’s a horrid thing to witness and hear about. It needs to be stopped.

@@lumini3172 Wow, I wasn't aware of that, thanks to both you and OP for highlighting it. I knew about mistreating kids because they refuse modern medicine, and I figured their views on women were outdated, but I didn't know it was that bad. That's horrible and I'm sorry you were exposed to such a toxic mindset. But I'm glad you're out of it and have realised how damaging it is. I hope you find peace and healing along the way on your journey. 🫂

If you're gonna homeschool your kids do it right. If you're going to raise kids at all, they are actual human beings, value and respect them or f&$k off.)

She’s not actually Amish is the fact that she 1. Has access to electricity 2. Has a phone and 3. Is on TikTok and posting on TikTok. Amish people are not allowed access to any modern things.
@luciaramirez71916 ай бұрын
It depends on the social class of said plains communities like the Amish. Typically the weather a community is, the more “English” they are. They’re allowed to use generators for electricity in their homes, drive diesel/gas powered vehicles/farm equipment, have phones since they run on a battery, and are more involved in the “English” (modern) communities. My uncle owns a concrete company in Indiana where he works with some people from the Amish community who have access to these resources, it really just depends on the wealth of the church and community. They can still be corrupt and sick, even if they have these amenities though:(

As someone who was homeschooled for a while (and had to go to a co-op run by a church), homeschool kids are weird, even the ones who go to homeschool co-ops, but some of us do grow out of it again
@ellaelliott44155 ай бұрын
Yeah there was a kid in my school at one point who was homeschooled and we could kinda tell. Socialization was different, views on how to interact with the world were different. But I feel like once the real world isn’t something optional to understand based on how you were homeschooled adjustment can happen easier…? Kinda guessing here. But co ops are different from school socialization, even if it does provide a social space. If that makes sense.
@CatsinHats46 ай бұрын
Fellow homeschool kid here!! Thanks for giving us a good name! So many people say weird things about us and I’ve had people try to make me feel bad about it. Between co-ops, sports, music lessons, band, field trips, and all the free time, I typically got more meaningful socialization than the kids who went to public school. Not to mention the lack of fist fights, drugs, sex, school shooting threats, harassment, and bullying. I wouldn’t trade being homeschooled for the world and I’m thankful to my mom every day. I’ve graduated now and never once regretted being homeschooled. Also public school kids legit are so weird like why do you all look the goddamn same? Why do you all legitimately fight over petty shit? Why don’t a single one of you know how to do math? Why are you all so goddamn judgmental? Why do you “make friends” with people you don’t like and have nothing in common with? Anyway not the point. The point is you just got 10x cooler in my eyes Cooper 😎 P.S. if you think homeschool kids are weird, ask yourself if what you find weird is 1) them actually being homeschooled, 2) the fact that they dress/act how they want and have interests that aren’t popular as opposed to strictly following what society wants them to be, or 3) if they’re actually just disabled. The amount of people who have looked at autistic kids and gone “I bet he’s homeschooled that’s why he acts weird” is ASTOUNDING! Get your ableism in check people!

@bunnyellabell oh interesting, I knew there were different groups but I didn't realize some were okay with that stuff. I've only ever seen 2 buggys, the one time I tried going to an amish furniture store, they weren't open, so ive never even talked to an amish person
@leileyaravencroft6 ай бұрын
@@bunnyellabellOooh. I just pointed that out. There are some things that are shared between the Amish communities but there also have varying levels of strictness. Like for instance, many people believe ALL Amish are against technology when that’s simply not true. The truth is many don’t but there are some who allow one phone and/or one car. I knew of a community that had both due to the death of a beloved member. Other aspects that are different is some will socialize with outsiders. Mind you not heavily but they have friendly acquaintances. And one important aspect is that there are some that have a rite of passage ritual sort of speak. This is that once an Amish child reaches a certain age, they are allowed to leave the compound and see the outside world. They aren’t homeless, there is a half-way house of sorts that they can live in. They are given a set time frame to experience the outside world before making the choice of returning to the Amish community or staying out in the world. Mind you, if they do choose to live outside. Chances are they are not allowed to return. It is seen as they had made a permanent decision to stay outside. The same decision is given to the outsiders who wish to join and they can do so but will be given a similar time frame to make this decision. And yet another difference is that there are even some that will take their sick loved ones to the hospital. The sentiment is that God blessed certain people the ability to help the weak so to them to deny this is like spitting in the face of God. I will emphasize that this is not a common core belief. In fact, it’s quite the opposite and very rare. Most of the Amish stick to the core principles that they are known for, down to shunning *any* outsiders.
