I like how these form a story through the ads; Segata starts off as a SEGA henchman beating people into buying SEGA Saturns, gets a job as a mall Santa, trains up his knowledge of martial arts, breaks into a house to "rescue" the trapped victims, almost gets killed by the zombies of people he killed, escapes and raises an army to fight the zombies, and once victorious embarks on a career in professional sports before meeting the love of his life and getting a videogame of his exploits made and, completing the cycle, sacrifices himself to save SEGA in a massive fucking explosion. Why doesn't this man have a movie?

I could see those commercials coming over here, but they'd have to change them. The Segata theme would be gone and they'd play it up like a badly dubbed kung fu movie and throw a filter over it. Also, most of those games did not come out in the US. I think, like Sonic R and Bomberman and maybe Sakura Wars did. Honestly, I would've liked to see Burning Rangers, Deep Fear, and Wachenroder make it over. They'd also need to commission commercials for Virtua Fighter 2, Daytona USA, Clockwork Knight, NiGHTs, and a few sports games. Or, just reuse footage from the commercials for games that didn't come out here...

Outside of refusing to bring over the Saturn's good games because he thought 2D was on the way out (which, to give him credit, was sorta true at the time) and RPGs were "too nerdy" to be popular (he said this just a few months before the release of Final Fantasy VII in NA) he did 2 other things that were dumb: 1. He cancelled Streets of Rage 4 for the Dreamcast because he had never heard of Streets of Rage before. (I am not joking) 2. You know how EA never published anything on the Dreamcast? They had plans to publish a lot of games on the system, but Stolar told them to fuck off since Sega had just purchased some sports developer whose name escapes me. Basically he thought that they didn't need EA to make the Dreamcast popular. Good thing Sega ousted him just before the Dreamcast dropped in NA. Who knows what would have happened if he would still be in charge during the Dreamcast's short run. I don't think we would have gotten Skies of Arcadia, Grandia II, or Bangai-O.

Lastly there were carts that combined both of these functions AND allowed your system to play games from all regions.

I saw these ads on a youtube channel for old video game ads and instantly fell in love. Some of the ads here are much shorter than the full length ones though- notably the soccer ones start out serious and fake you out into thinking it's going to be a real ad until segata randomly shows up. But these are definitely high quality and with subtitles, which is amazing in it's own right
