In episode #73 of Weird Stuff In A Can, we ended up with some leftover sauerkraut - in this video, we're going to try using it to add a German flavour twist to a traditional British leftover dish - Bubble And Squeak (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubble_...)
You might have noticed that only one of the half-cans of leftover sauerkraut stew made it into this video - the other one, which was a tomato and paprika flavoured casserole with sauerkraut and vegetables, was too delicious and I couldn't resist eating all of it - so there were no leftovers there.

The mention of fish cakes makes me hungry for the ones my grandma used to make. Canned salmon mixed with an egg and just enough of a half and half mixture of corn meal and flour to soak up the juices. Add a bit of salt and pepper and patty it out kinda thin(less than half an inch thick), then pan fry in about a quarter inch of oil until golden brown. They were good both warm and cold. I have tried making them myself but of course they can't even come close to hers.

That sounds wonderful. I have recipes like that - I think it's important to keep on trying to make them like the ones grandma used to make - getting closer each time, but also knowing that they'll never be quite the same - I think it's a beautiful way to honour the memory of someone you loved

Sauerkraut would be "weird stuff in a can" for me. Sauerkraut is readily available where I live, but it's never in a can. It's always in a little vaccuum packed baggie. We have several nice flavours as well. The red wine flavour is pretty good. I always have it in a potato mash. A smooth potato mash, that is. And then eat it with a Unox smoked sausage and a good helping of gravy. It's a super traditional Dutch meal. I usually also add pieces of apple or pineapple to take the edge off the sauerkraut. Sometimes a few raisins, too.

we have it in Jars bags cans Plastic baggies or even in wood barrels miniature ones ore in stonejars and other forms also :D and a tip of mine try halfed grapes in Sauerkraut

When I lived in Pennsylvania people thought you needed to eat turkey or ham, mashed potatoes and sauerkraut for your New Years dinner in order to ensure good luck, health and prosperity throughout the new year. Leftovers from that meal would be perfect for bubble and squeak. My ex's family always had sauerkraut with their Christmas and Easter meals and they'd mix their mashed potatoes and sauerkraut together before topping it with gravy. Their family were from Pennsylvania Dutch (German) ancestry. My mother's family in Virginia believe you have to eat ham, greens (turnips or kale), black eyed peas and cornbread on New Years in order to ensure a good year ahead. My mother takes this meal very seriously.

Wonderful use of leftovers. My Grandparents had dozens of recipes like this that made at least two extra meals a week. Bubble 'n' squeek with cold meats and pickles was my favourite, but also cottage pie or shepherd's pie using the last of the Sunday roast was another. Love your channel. Keep up the great content like this.

Been rewatching some of your older video's, afraid i might have mnissed some good stuff :) I often also just listen to the vid's, or fall asleep to them, so sometimes even discover i missed something funny or interesting in vid's that i already liked/seen.. Sauerkraut is particularly good when refried the next day! We used to put the leftovers on a buttered slice of white bread, someitmes toasted along the kraut: if there was any smoked sausage left, bonus! Same goes for all of those hearthy winter dishes, which we in Holland call 'Stamppot', which are basically any cabbage type veggies, with usually taters, gravy and meat. Would love to see you do some more classic regional dishes, or try ours! (perhaps in a can?) Also been trying out some of the Conserva shop items you did a few of, think with bread and butter in a can? Some of the dishes are quite good! Aside froma good stocked freezer, does the Shrimp cottage also have a small preppers department? I mean you have all the stuff - dehydrator, jars and probably cans to fill, a good garden and some serious foraging skills! Would make for a nice little series perhaps? Loving the sounds of the frying; love bubble and Squeak. Have never tried it with black pudding but love black pudding. I don't have it too often. No one can fry black pudding quite like my grandma and having it with her home-made rellish I remember it being absolutely delicious can taste it all over again as I write this :) Keep these dishes coming attomic Shrimp. :)

I absolutely love bubble and squeak...and your version has left me hungry!! Anything with cabbage and potatoes is good, but the additional veg, makes it look even better! Thanks for your videos, you are part of my evening unwinding ritual.

While I'm most definitely American my family has always embraced the corned beef and cabbage bit of our ancestry and I've loved making B&S with the leftover veg and hash with the beef. So yummy 😋

I'm not sure why but I was surprised the recipe didn't call for egg as a binder. Also, I find it hard to resist the urge to flip cakes like this almost immediately after putting them in the pan.
