Only buy a Mercedes if you love to drive, love automotive perfection, can afford one, and can afford the repairs. They are some of the best cars on the road, don’t require more maintenance than most cars, and are reliable if maintained properly. When work needs to be done, it’s going to cost more than a typical car, but if you can afford it, it’s worth it.

100% in agreement. And frankly, if you build a relationship with an independent German automotive expert, maintenance costs the same as any Toyota/Lexus or Nissan/Infiniti because I’ve owned them all. And Mercedes-Benz is still the best. Lexus IS close but just is not the same...

The one I have now is a 2006 E280 (W211 Facelift ), bought it with 75K on the clock for £4,300. I am just moving into my 3rd year with it and it is such a lot of fun to drive. Both have been very reliable. The only things I have had to fix are is the MAF sensor on the first car and the MAF sensor and Solenoids on the second car. tasos vougiatzis Awesome! I have 2 w212 e350's. Ones a 2013 and the other is a 2010. I first bought a BMW because I have a few BMW's from the 80's and they're great cars, the engines are bulletproof. So I decided to buy a 2013 BMW 328i coupe with the 6 cylinder. 2 weeks after owning it the thing already wouldn't start LOL. Took it to the dealer and it needed $3,000 worth of work right out of the gate. Oil was leaking into the wiring harness causing everything to short out. To make a long story short, I canceled the finance deal and gave the car back to the dealer and bought a 2013 Mercedes e350. It's been a great car so far, 85,000 miles trouble free. You can tell just by the interior and the way the car feels it's much higher quality than the BMW. So then I ran across a deal on a 2010 e350 with only 35,000 miles that was highly optioned with the AMG package so I scooped that up as well. Moral of the story, New BMW's are garbage. I heard some rumors from the inside that BMW is actually wanting to sell off the company because the family that owns it doesn't want to deal with it anymore. Hopefully whatever company buys it will turn it around because right now, Mercedes is walking all over them in terms of quality.

A friend of a friend's father was driving his daughter's Mercedes while she was out of town. Every time he started the car there was some type of warning message. He didn't know what it was and ignored it as the car still worked fine. After a number of these messages the car would no longer start. He ended up having to tow it to the dealership. Problem - the warning message was about changing the oil, and once the predetermined mileage had registered, the engine automatically shut down. Crazy. Time to build basic cars at reasonable prices for the masses. Think of the resources and energy wasted manufacturing all this crap.

It's not that bad, I own a CLS 500, do my own maintenence, recently changed the SBC pump (used) for 300 euros, more or less the same in dollars, I have my own diagnostics tool, was like 400 bucks. Definitely more difficult to work on then some other brands, but not as crazy as you make it sound. If you are mechanically inclined and know how to use google, find cheaper parts than it's really not that bad. CLS drives like dream, feels very luxurious, and when you put your foot down, it's all smiles. Can't get that on an old Toyota, in fact, I've driven many old Toyotas, and to be fair, it feels like driving a trashcan.

My mom drives a 2006 mercedes e class (w211, 220cdi) and it currently has just shy over 400000 miles on it and was dead reliable so far. She owned since it had 12000 miles on it and it never let her stranded. Same story with my brother‘s 2005 w211, which has about 250000 miles on the clock. I mean sure you have to do basic maintenance things like breaks and stuff, but you might as well go to an independent dealer ones your warranty expires, since there are no collector cars and if you have a good mechanic or do the work yourself, they aren’t expensive to own. One tip for all of you looking to buy a mid 2000s mercedes: don’t choose the airmatic suspension or the abc suspension, as these kinds of suspensions all get weak not because of the mileage, but because of the age and it is expensive to maintain these systems cost effectively, that’s where scotty is right. Ah, yeah I‘m from Germany so the situation in the us might be different.

Brake system on that is called Sensotronic Brake Control. Or SBC. It does have to be deactivated and reactivated when servicing any brake component. The system is made to prime the brakes if someone say, opens a door, or touches the pedal at all. It’ll put 100bar or pressure the the caliper for just a brief second to test the system. If the calipers of off and sitting open on the vehicle with no pad or rotor it’ll blow a piston out. With the struts, don’t have to be replaced in pairs. When you replace them it’s a good idea to have a level calibration done when an alignment is done. But even that isn’t generally needed. Mercedes Benz are great vehicles, and it does take some extensive training to repair these vehicles and know best practices.

So all we have to do is buy a Mercedes that doesn't have Senso- tronic brake control and/or Active Body Control...I've had four C and CLK 's and have never had to repair anything,,, just routine maintenance,,,very well engineered cars..actually can be economical to run, beautiful to drive and very safe as well. Thanks for keep the used car prices low Scotty.....Keep up the good work.

Yes I know what I am doing these are very simple things on regular cars that are difficult for mercedes. So you know how to change the battery on a late model mercedes? Or how to replace the tires? You need a damn proprietary for all that $hit. Thats why AAA won't service them.

@@BloodlineMedia Isn't that simple the computer/s have to be reprogrammed every time you replace a battery. You also have to know the power output, capacity and how much charge that new battery can accept.. They also have to be reprogrammed when the tires are changed. Things so simple have to be so complicated with these new german cars.
@rchot84

@@BloodlineMedia It's simply not cost effective to waste 1000 dollars on a programming tool (keep on mind other german brands will want you to use their programming tool for their cars) and you make the same amount of money as you would from a regular car. That's just the simple stuff that everyone should be able to do, but won't because it is a German car. I could just imagine what one would have to go through to replace an altenator or pump or god forbid an electronics problem. Also german cars use cheap material for parts that wear out fast and cost a lot just for the replacement.

We had several GL's come into the Mercedes shop my father owns and they wouldn't start. Come to find out that there's a wiring harness on the rear bumper for the parktronic system that's connected to DAS (DRIVER AUTHORIZATION SYSTEM) and when the connections corrode they prevent the car from starting. The wiring harness costs $45. The replacement costs about $700.

I disagree with you Scotty!! I have owned Mercedes since the early 90's, never had any problems with them! Depends on which car, like the S class, yes it can have problems, airbag suspension, etc! I have always bought the c class and e, best cars ever!! My last Mercedes was a 2009 e350, 241k miles, not one problem, not one check engine light! If you put premium gas and full synthetic oil they will out last any American junk and Japanese! My father had a Mercedes with over 600k miles, no rust, original engine and transmission (no rebuilds), no major problems! Some people dont take care of their Mercedes right, so know who you are buying from when getting a used Mercedes! The best or nothing!! :)

The only issue that recently occured was a fault in the parking sensors. But over my 5 year ownership i cannot complain. It all comes down to how you look after your car. If you want a mercedes go for it, just find a well looked after and maintained example.

2.0 Lyf Pop I bought the W204 the 08-14 c class. I chose the C300 because of the n/a v6 engine. Done all the work myself so far. Serp belt, air filters, breaks. Very easy to work on. Make sure you buy one that has a good maintenance history. Mine was a 1 owner all services done thru Mercedes dealer. Make sure they did the transmission service every 40k miles. Spark plugs are 5 years every 80k miles. Oil is every 1 year or 10k miles. (Euro spec mobile 1 oil at the very least). I wouldn’t push it to 10k imo. Do research it’s really cheap to own. About the same to maintain as my subabru.
