"My he is tenacious isn't he?"
Hot Fuzz (2007) SYNOPSIS: As a former London constable, Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) finds it difficult to adapt to his new assignment in the sleepy British village of Sandford. Not only does he miss the excitement of the big city, but he also has a well-meaning oaf (Nick Frost) for a partner. However, when a series of grisly accidents rocks Sandford, Nick smells something rotten in the idyllic village.

Franks wife is a warning of what would have happened to Nicholas had he continued down the route he was going. She was a perfectionist in what she did who eventually lost her mind when she couldn’t achieve the results she wanted. We see this from Nicholas who is an overachiever who lives for serving the law and is unable to switch off. We see Nicholas becoming more and more depressed throughout the course of the film when he is unable to solve what is going on in Sanford to the point where he starts to doubt even himself which is the start of him losing his own mind. The core message of this film is about striking the right balance between work and play and what a person can become if they only dedicate their lives to one

It didn’t help that Frank Butterman and the rest of the Sanford officers were gaslighting him so much. Before Lurch tried to kill him, even Nicholas was saying Leslie Tiller tripped and fell on her own shears, even though he basically saw the truth with his own eyes. But yes, all work and no play…
@scartee13
@scartee13 Жыл бұрын
That’s actually very insightful! Danny’s mother was as dedicated to Sanford as Nicholas is to serving the law but that dedication turned into an all consuming obsession that cost her her life. It’s good that eventually Nicholas understood that great as it is to be passionate and dedicated about something there has to be a moment in life to jus stop and smell the roses or it could lead to your downfall.

I really do love who Angel invents a whole Chinatown-esque conspiracy to explain the murders and it all boils down to essentially the petty whining of a Daily Mail letters page. It does actually show you that occams razor does often play - a bunch of old insular cooks will kill because they are old, insular cooks.

It was even foreshadowed. Every one of the motives was said by Danny while they were investigating, they were just recited as a throwaway line to show that Danny can only follow the basics...but it turned out it was the throwaway quirks that were important and the major connections were a coincidence.

You have to look at what bothers and irritates most people and it isn't the kind of crime or incidents the police are geared to tackle in the 21st century. British police are first and foremost centralised to the Home Office now at a central government level. Your local police force may be called "West Yorkshire Police" or "Sussex Constabulary" or whatever but the reality is their policing priorities and direction comes from Westminster. PCCs are something of a nothing position with no operational control over policing and in my view were a cheap attempt at giving the illusion of community input. Local villages & towns don't have a say on how they are policed, local community surgeries may be held by the PCSOs or Neighbourhood Team but in reality they won't be prioritising low level nuisance or what I'd describe as "visible street crime" the reality is police are too busy dealing with domestic violence and what is best termed as 'safeguarding' which is a combination of mental health NHS and local authority social service callouts to vulnerable people - detecting and investigating all but the most serious of crime has taken a backseat and has done so for around 20 years or so now.

A lot of people missed the callback that the Andes said to Nicholas in the beginning "oh youre just dying to hop into Popwells grave" and then he literally does. Ive also seen this movie about 200 times and i JUST noticed that when he flashes back to the fountain when he throws the coin in, the entire council is on that plaque....including Frank. Edgar gave it away in a brief flash that almost no one saw in that moment. I love Edgar Wright.
