@Soli - That’s because most dieters approach it as temporary. Once they lose weight, they simply return to their previous terrible eating habits and unsurprisingly regain the weight. Studies of long-term weight loss show that regular calorie counting is what keeps the weight off. In other words, long-term success is achieved via long-term changes. I am also part of this long-term loss group and still count calories despite having lost the weight 15 years ago.

@@Solmaz_S Those studies are deeply flawed and not indicative of reality. The study you always see fat activists point to about how "95% of people gain the weight back!" was a small sample size study from 1959 using 1950s era exercise and dietary knowledge. @@kerina6594 sounds good 😁 Over my years (many, many years) of trying to lose weight and keep it off, at 67y.o., I have finally made the change permanent. I can tell. You know, when you know that you know, right?! Perseverance, retirement, biological changes helped me 😆 Albeit, I lost 20- 30 the last few years before retirement 3 years ago. Since then I lost 20 more and have a final 20 more to lose. Anyway, I found that reporting my weight to others messed me up; while, I guess for many it really helps. The only exception, was after retirement, it felt good to occasionally keep my son posted on how well I am doing . He lost, I think it was 35 lbs. and is keeping it off. I followed his plan of counting calories. When I was young, I started to count cals; but, didn't like doing it & quit. Now, I record all my meal/foods calories in a 6"x 9" spiral steno bk (old school, I still write on paper, ha, ha). I also have a couple of pages that I write cals. of foods I eat repeatedly so I can look them up quicker than on the net. I spend a little extra $ to buy 45 cal. bread (by SaraLee called "Delightful") and put 1 T. crmy p.b. on it (135 cal) for breakfast. I like that a lot. Sometimes, I have turkey bacon (the kind WITH salt!)& 1 or 2 eggs. I saute & add a little grn. pepper to my scrambled eggs. I also have 2 cups of coffee in the morn. & won't give up my T. of "Great Value" creamer. I used to just pour in at least 2 T. of the 30 ca l creamer so, at least, I reduced that. A big discovery that made me sooo happy was, "Ole Xtreme Wellness!" tortillas. Only 50 cals! I found I like the spinach & herb flavor the best. The other they make is tomato basil ? I wrap up 50 cal light string cheese, 1/4 + 1/8 c. of canned Re-fried beans (60 cals.) in wax paper and steam in micro 2 min.. Add lettuce and 1/4 c. (2T) salsa (15 cal) and have a filling meal for 175 cals! Last; but, not least, I pray.

I was 74 kg at the beginning of December, I started walking 7km with my dog every day, I stopped ordering food and bought only healthy food (shopping via an app helps you to just buy food from your shopping list and not get distracted with tempting food), so even if I have cravings, there is no junk food at home. Now is the end of January and I'm 65kg, dropping the junk food and being more active has changed my life.

Im with you on this! I have 6 kids and was obese my entire life until the last 2 year's. If i was eating unhealthy that was me. My husband is slim and active and he became prediabetic. He has really bad genetic inheritance. He was totally unaware of his carbohydrate intake. He got quite cross with me when I pointed it out. He started writing everything that he eats into an Excel spreadsheet and records the carbohydrate content. He now keeps his carbohydrate intake around 200 grams a day. He weighs the same as before (still slim despite eating more fat and protein) and his blood sugar dropped to normal. His cholesterol panel improved too. It took a rigorous food diary for me (low end of normal weight) to identify the foods that trigger migraine attacks. Anybody at any weight can be unaware of his what they're eating affects them. I've seen superskinnies on Supersize vs. Superskinny adamantly declare that they eat a healthy diet and they eat enough. It's a mystery why they're so scrawny.
