This show just highlights how difficult a doctor's job really is. Your patient comes in suffering from the ill effects of obesity and they are saying all the right things. They are so far in denial or ashamed of some bingeing that they erase it from their own memory! Without video proof how does a medical professional get through to them? I feel like in a normal situation they'd just leave the office saying the doctor doesn't get it and they must have a medical issue that's hampering their weight loss.
@FreshSalad6454 жыл бұрын
For having a family member who is a health professional and deals with this issue on a weekly basis, it is even harder than that. People often lie or a not honest with their diets. Even when people try to be honest, they have a really hard time sticking to a "plan". I'm not even talking about a meal plan, I'm not talking about forbidding people to eat certain things. It's more about portion control, balanced diets, and a little bit of everything (like, if you really loooove chocolate, you can have a bit, just don't binge on it every day kind of thing). It does require to change habits and it is really hard ! Her patients often just "slip" back into old habits, and then they come back with the same issue and she's like "did the plan help, or was it too hard?" - "Oh no, it helped, it wasn't hard... I just stopped". What do you want her to do except like "well, I gave you the solution, the rest is up to you". I do think it is hard because no one wants to spend so much time thinking about the food and it pushes people into "decision fatigue" in a way. Plus, there are TONS of things out there that are temptation (especially if you have a food issue, whatever the personal reason is). So you make an exception, and then another, and another and then you are back to the start. It is especially hard in her field because some people do have genuine things they can't or shouldn't eat (I know people make a useless fuss around gluten, lactose, and whatnot but she's a health professional, not a marketeer, so she does deal with people who have genuine food intolerance or allergies). Even if they have medical proof they shouldn't eat or drink certain food types, they sometimes just "give up", even if it gives them terrible side effects. Many people just "can't imagine" their life without certain food. (In her job, she gives them alternatives and meal ideas, so it's not like they are left on their own). In general, food related issues are hard to deal with because a part of it is psychological. It is not just calories, macros, and good fats, it is also about people's relationship with food. If the person doesn't want to work on that, you can't help them.
@tinachristine45734 жыл бұрын
Food is a very emotional thing. It triggers memories of the earliest form of care/love we received from our caregivers. How little or much of it we take is a complex interplay of psychological responses and coping mechanisms. Until the individual is able to answer truthfully 'What does food represent to me? Why is satiety so paramount to me as a sensation? What do hunger pangs trigger within me on an emotional level? How do I express my feelings/opinions? How do I view myself in relation to my sense of being deserving of 'good things'? So this is a lot of psychological work and until it's done, counting calories just won't crack it. It will be like telling a drug addict to just say no to drugs.

A lot of people don't believe me but it's true, yeah I'm short but people I know who are shorter than me can eat more than me without gaining weight lol. Yawn. As Lisa mentioned, potatoes are healthy. You, as an individual, may have low carb tolerance. Others do not. Carbohydrates do not inherently hinder weight loss unless you eat them in excess, same as proteins and fats. Plenty of people regularly eat rice, potatoes, and pasta while simultaneously losing weight/maintaining a healthy weight. All bodies are not created equally. Be balanced and do what works for you. @nataliak.82514 жыл бұрын
very good point, actually this "experiment" means nothing at all, no other variables were considered, there were only 8 people in total which is just too few to actually count this as an experiment and there was no repetition of the "experiment" to compare results. So the result has no statistical value at all. The only "experiments" that have some meaning are those they do in the markets etc that there are a lot of people of different ages and gender, but even the. there are other variables to consider such as the culture and the fact that most people prefer food they are used to and so on. So basically the show throws random statistics that mean nothing to prove their point (not that they are necessarily wrong but they have no actual arguements to prove it). What they are are saying is probably from actual science experiments but the way they try to show it is just bad and means nothing.

Your body is not rested and is low on energy, and it wants something, anything, that can just get it that extra bit of energy. When it gets bad enough it's legitimately a "eat something NOW or I'm shutting down" feeling. If you think you might have a sleep disorder absolutely get it checked out. My husband is textbook healthy, I'm very sick and have a diet existing on picking at things and mostly just full of hot air, while our kids battle the bulge while we chew them out about it routinely. I really want to know what you do when your home is divided by extremely fussy (due to medical reasons) eaters, vs the bulge who is of the habit of stealing our muffins from the cupboard. No, they don't talk about the fact that there is no specifically healthy safe food. All are bad when abused period. I think the compulsive behavior is the primary component because all of us eat and therefore it is the greatest mystery as to why some people are so metabolically different from each other. Even though we are genetically related, we are still sk vastly different in how we process and use our energy and fats. Bottom line you can look like Rosie O'Donnell but eat like Angelina Jolie and it would not matter because the vehicle your driving is a lemon and it sucks unfortunately. bruh why are they so concerned on the most people choosing the burger? it’s 550 calories so like if they have 3 meals of that amount that’s a calorie deficit. even if they eat some snacks with that same amount of calories they’ll be eating a normal amount of calories (~2000) so i don’t see the issue other than it’s not the best choice. but none of the choices are the best choice?

I didn’t even learn about calories or macronutrients until I was 16! I never understood how I was working out for hours a day and still gaining weight until I actually looked up why good makes you gain. I always looked for video on how to lose weight without eating less but it was all garbage:( I realized I was eating around 3,000 calories a day not including days I eat out and I cut done and went from 180lbs to 150 in 4 months. I gained up to 165 and am back down to 156 and I’m still working towards 120! Especially since the fatties we see on this show frequently eat meals that are less tasty but that are larded with fats, meats and cheeses. They end up being over 1000 kcal or even 1500 kcal. The fatties frequently get the worst of both worlds--fattening foods without much of the taste. Reminds me of the episode with the lovely Indian couple. When the woman discovered that the cheese sauce her boyfriend had been pouring over their "healthy" moussaka was 2000 kcal, or as much as two pizzas, she said what we were all thinking: "I could've been eating the pizza all along." LOL...

I put on over 10 lb in one year from chugging sugary coffee and tea to keep going in my old job. Lost all that weight after going back to school and over summer break. I don't know how I'm supposed to keep the weight off when I start working again. It's going to be difficult.

Lala lalala Not really. Although it’s true there are other factors to weight gain, that man getting seven cookies isn’t really an accurate example. He’s thin. We don’t know what his diet is like usually. Ever see a thin person splurge on junk food? Happens a lot right? But they aren’t doing that every day. Most of the time, their diet is very healthy. They typically aren’t obsessed with food and if they want something they’ll go for it, like he did with the cookies. They usually have a very healthy mindset with food. The guy also could be very active. But then again, he could be someone with a very fast metabolism that makes it hard to gain weight, we never really know 🤷🏽♀️
@futurefruit82815 жыл бұрын
@@helloiamnotacrazedbuttstab2109 The whole "fast metabolism" thing doesn't really exist... Not to the extent that it will make the difference between that man and the subjects of this episode. People have different metabolic rates (BMR) based on their size and weight, but that is part of what you base your daily caloric intake on (TDEE). You can figure out how much energy you expend per day, then you base your diet on that. But I'm with you on the rest of it!

Don’t insist your kids clear their plate, or that they take “just one more bite”. I bet Fay was made to clear her plate when she was a kid. The problem is that kids don’t learn to listen to their body and stop when they’re full. If you’re worried about wasting food, save what you can off their plate for another meal, or eat it yourself (not on top of your own meal but instead of it), or maybe start a worm farm if you can. If you’re worried about your kid not eating enough - trust them. As long as you provide enough of at least one food they like and you know they’ll eat each meal, they should be getting enough.
@sitcomchristian68862 жыл бұрын
True. My 3-year old girl has always been a good eater and I never push her to eat beyond her boundaries. But I do encourage healthy choices. For example, tonight I made a healthy dinner (chicken and broccoli casserole), and served rolls with butter as a side. After eating a whole roll with butter (over 200 calories per roll, not including the butter, but only I know the calorie count lol), hardly taking but a few bites of the main course, she asked for more bread and butter. I told her that I'd like for her to work on her dinner, and if she was still hungry after that, she was welcome to have more bread and butter. But, that if she was full, she didn't have to eat more. Toddlers have a knack for "not being hungry for XYZ food", but suddenly SO hungry for simple carbs 😂
