For the first 3 years aim to ignore every single tip/video/advice that tells you can grow your hair faster, you can grow your hair in one week, in fact anything saying growth just ignore it and only believe in time and proper care for your hair profile and ends... Or you'll waste your years chasing after dreams and still be baldheaded in 3 years when proper care would have gotten you where you wanted to be.

The bonnet….I wore one from the beginning of my natural hair journey. My styles were always condensed and hard and drawn up. I realized that the bonnet was tooooo hot for me. I sweat at night, especially now that I am having hot flashes. When I ditched the bonnet and just used a satin pillow case my styles (twist outs) turned out so much better and my sleep improved I have no breakage because the same friction in the satin bonnet exists with a satin pillow case…smooth. It depends on your circumstances as to what you can use.

I get why some newly natural women do protective styles. Many have a twa or “awk length” hair. Twa’s don’t fit everyone’s face & styling awk length can take some creativity. I know if I had a twa I’d do protective styles till I got some length.

Deep conditioning is important. If you have breakage mix black or green tea with your conditioner to reduce hair fall.

For me it was the stop co washing. I only use as I am co washes. And whenever I used them long term my scalp and hair got better. And my hair was better with a clay wash than a shampoo. Shampoo made my scalp issues worse...
@justjules20293 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for this advice. Would love a part two. My advice not to follow is staying away from water. I’m trying to either cowash daily along with a shampoo weekly/deep condition plan (Hair Rules Channel). Or at the least spritz my hair daily and shampoo/deep condition weekly. Not cowashing only because you need to shampoo/clarify to get off the build up. Only cowashing was terrible for me. Use heavy oils/butters daily. They overwhelmed my hair. I use lighter oils/butters daily. Apricot oil is my favorite. Argan oil is a close second. Macadamia nut oil is third. And a heavier one, avocado oil, for deep conditioning. Cupuacu, murumuru, and tucuma butters are my favorites for lighter butters.

The first time I washed my hair after going natural(washing a silk press out) I realized I couldn’t just wear my hair out because of all the tangles and knots. So I have been exclusively twisting my hair(no extensions) since then and it makes it easier to detangle with just my fingers and go through my wash day. I tried different brushes(boar bristle, bamboo, tangle teaser),but kept finding split ends and now I have none since finger detangling only. Everyone is different-especially in terms of how they’re comfortable wearing their hair- and keeping my type 4 hair parted and twisted has been great for learning what it wants. The twists sectioning my hair also helped me focus on the nape and edges separate from the rest of my hair, which kept them from the tension of bigger sections and let them grow.
@omtiam3 жыл бұрын
i agree, i keep my hair stretched and in twists to help with knots (i'm also lazy) lol and i feel that I don't need a tool and i can exclusively finger detangle since i keep my hair stretched and separated 75% of the time. i pretty much only wear it out when i'm "going out" somewhere.
@miscellaneouslife27783 жыл бұрын
@@omtiam yes the “lazy” aspect is so true for me. I used to wear “protective” styles with extensions before I went natural, so I’m so used to seeing me have the same style for months on end.

I’ve been so lost following the new “no oil” thing. They recommended not deep conditioning every wash day and my hair was just not having it. So I’m gonna start deep conditioning again and doing what helps my hair…not the trends.

Sharmaine, I've been enjoying your channel & just wanted to say that your hair is stunningly beautiful as are you! My eyes are still watering from the storytime about the hair-school perm - I'm so sorry that happened to you. Big congrats on the house! 🎉🎊 And great advice in this video! My pet peeve that I hear people give as advice all the time (not you!) is the whole 'stick with it' thing (whatever the regimen or products or ingredients or 'detox')... sticking with it has to be within reason, because all the fads & methods can't be one size fits all. If a person's hair or scalp is protesting something they're trying, they don't have to stick with it 'till their hair falls out! Also, deep condition regularly is good advice & ppl need to know to switch out their DC if it's not working or if it's overloading them with protein (haha, some of us figure this out the hard way!) 😂 xoxo 🌸🌸🌸

I wear a satin scarf and silk pillowcase, just covering all the bases, halfway through the night the scarf comes off and my head slides around on my silk pillowcase.... I can't believe for years I had the pillow case but didn't use it and knew for a fact my scarf always comes off so I'd wake up with my hair rubbing on my cotton pillow cases. I'd use the pillowcase alone but I don't want my face rubbing against a pillow with hair product on it for the entire night... Half the night is okay 😆

tbh when I first went natural I did go straight into protective styles. It’s actually how I grew out my hair a LOT. It got pretty long before I did start wearing it out (straightened like every 2 weeks) and then I chopped a lot of it off again due to heat damage. Right after that, I did the same thing and went into protective styles, grew it out a decent amount, and finally started wearing it out again and during that year and from then out (except for another time when I got another protective style for a trip), is then when I took the time to wear out my natural hair and learn it, etc. Granted, when I went “natural,” it wasn’t even to go natural. I just had to chop all my hair off due to not brushing it out properly after taking out braids, tried to wash it, it was a tangled mess, yadda yadda. I was kind of forced into just starting over because of that mishap and just so happened to not get any relaxers again. I went into protective styles not even thinking twice about that either; I was just young and knew I was NOT about to be going to school with my hair super short 💀 So with all that being said, I don’t think going into protective styles after a big chop is a terrible thing to do. It worked out for me and I think it’s just great for people who do want to stop getting relaxers but haven’t gripped their own natural hair yet and don’t particularly want to deal with it for that time being whether it be because they’d prefer it longer, don’t want to be bothered by it at that time, etc, but I can see why you say that as well. It just really depends on the person for sure

I totally agree with all your hair rules. I learned the hard way, especially with hair rule #1 I gave myself a huge setback because I grew out all this hair via braids, the 1yr1/2 just to watch it break off because I didn't know what to do with my hair next. What is finger detangling, deep conditioning, demarcation line😐😶😐😶😵😵😵😵??? I just knew I had all this hair that was NOT relaxed. ((What the hell!!!😳 )) 😂😂😂 But God is good and I made it through 11 years natural. Matter of fact I hit the restart button. After finally reaching waist-length hair, I big chop for the 2nd time this past May 2021.😂😂😂😋 So when you know better, you do better. I'm fully confident this time, is not going to take me 11 years. 😂😂😂 Love your channel and all the positiveness you spread in our communitys. 💗💖💗💖💗💖

I hate deep conditioners. They cost a lot and they come in such small containers. No ma'am! Lol. They are really thick too, and have lots of oil and butters and them. I don't like that. I like regular conditioners. They are light and froth up with used with lots of water. Making if easy to detangle your hair. I use Herbal Essence Rose Hip line. I love it! Both the shampoo and conditioner are freakin' amazing! The Pantene Classic Clean.line is good, too.
