She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is an American television miniseries created by Jessica Gao for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics character She-Hulk. It is the eighth television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) produced by Marvel Studios, sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. It follows Jennifer Walters, a lawyer specializing in cases involving superhumans, who also becomes the green superhero She-Hulk. Gao serves as head writer with Kat Coiro leading the directing team.
Tatiana Maslany stars as Jennifer Walters / She-Hulk, alongside Jameela Jamil, Ginger Gonzaga, Mark Ruffalo, Josh Segarra, Jon Bass, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Tim Roth, Benedict Wong, and Charlie Cox. She-Hulk was announced in August 2019, with Gao hired in November. Coiro joined to direct multiple episodes in September 2020, and Maslany was cast. By December, Roth and Ruffalo had joined the cast and Anu Valia was also set to direct. Filming began in mid-April 2021 in Los Angeles and Atlanta, Georgia, and lasted until mid-August. The subtitle for the series was added by May 2022.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law premiered on August 18, 2022 and will run for 9 episodes until October 13. It is the last television series of Phase Four in the MCU. The series received generally positive reviews, with particular praise for Maslany's performance and the lighthearted tone, though the CGI effects received some criticism.

This show makes Ed Norton's Incredible Hulk even more canon. Remember in that one a drop of hulk blood almost killed Stan Lee's cameo character and then at the end began to mutate that scientist. It doesn't take much.

I think the difference is that he’s pretty much always Smart Hulk so he wouldn’t get a hangover. However She turns back into a human so she gets hungover. That was my take on it anyway.

I think that's kind of the point. Smart Hulk sees it as an inevitability that she *will* do heroic things. He's projecting onto her everything he's been through, both the bad and the good, and thinks that because she's a hulk now, his path is now her path. His arc in this episode is about accepting that she's a different person with a different path (which may or may not lead to being a superhero, but that's something she needs to come to on her own, not be pushed into). Her arc, meanwhile, is only beginning, and is not about finding synthesis between two personalities, but between the thesis of her life as a lawyer and the antithesis that has been presented to her in the form of the inevitable change that being a hulk will bring (of which she is in denial).

I mean, there are really only two paths: superhero or supervillain. With great power comes great responsibility, and whether you act responsibly determines which path you venture on.

I think the nuances that can get lost is what qualifies as "heroic". A lot of really great comics focus on that and sometimes comic adaptations can tend to go for the more surface level "punch CG monsters" answer. She-Hulk has a valid point, she wants to make the world a better place through her job. She doesn't think the fate of the world hangs in the balance depending on if she signs up to become a "superhero". The problems she sees aren't solved with punching so choosing to be a lawyer is how she wants to make the world a better place. Now how well that's going to work out, clearly the point of the show. In the comic she does do a lot of good punching stuff but also in the courtroom. So what's more valuable to society and know does she contribute isn't a simple binary good vs evil decision. Other characters face different questions but good comics don't pretend it's a simple answer. Like we're very clearly inching towards a Young Avengers project and in-between stopping heists and preserving the timeline their comic was directly tied into that. What was the right choice for them as teenagers? What about the adults around them? Was the pain they went through worth it? The idea of legacy and the external forces got added in but also what impact their choices had. On their own lives of course but also on the people around them.

Also there were rights issues that limited what they could do with Hulk but those have potentially expired or been worked out and a new Hulk movie in the works...

However, you can read for yourself if you go back into the episode and take a snapshot of the QR code on the door that Jen walks by when she first goes into the bar. 9:08 out of that entire speech, that last line is the only one that I agree with. No one knows what it's like to be looked on and called a monster better than Bruce, but he is forgetting that Jennifer is not him. She doesn't have his trauma. She grew up in a well-balanced family environment. Bruce had literal hell and that hell created psychological damage that gave birth to his split personality. That's why she doesn't have an alter ego or another hand on the wheel. And why Blonsky doesn't. Yes he is more balanced and in a better place than he was 15 years ago, but that part of him will always set him apart from how Jennifers hulk form manifested. He has to keep that in check and it's tragic. But Jennifer seems to have a better handle on it and he's not recognizing it. He's only recognizing the downsides and possible risks that she Hass to be aware of. Although all of it is valid, he's going about it the wrong way.

While The Incredible Hulk was...okay. Especially considering the context and era it was made in. What they do with the Abomination and the final fight is such a let down. It feels like the perfect example of how not to create a superhero villain. They have what should be an interesting character arc but then turn him into a bland CG action piece that ignores everything about the character from the comics. They decided the comic design wasn't good enough so they improved it into that mess. Then to top it off It's a random street brawl with civilian casualties that is pretty obviously taking place in Toronto. And while the MCU wasn't a thing yet it means going forward we don't learn anything about gamma powers because we don't get to see what makes Bruce different. They just punch at each other because reasons. Arguably even with an unreliable narrator, Bruce clearly doesn't understand what's going on so Jen doesn't either, we learn more in this one episode than we have in all the other movies combined. Part of it is of course exposition. But seeing Bruce beside Jen shows what's gamma powers vs what's Bruce's character. That's something they could have had in The Incredible Hulk with Abomination but instead the movie was too busy destroying a chunk of Yonge Street to bother with characterization.

@@WookieWarriorz no she's literally not. She's literally saying she's better at controlling her anger because she's had to do it more often than he has. At no point does she say her life was harder than his. Actually watch the scene and you see she says she's had to control her anger in her life making her good at it, and she's right. She might not understand the exact differences between them but he doesn't either. Bruce thinks she should have his exact problems but he doesn't understand what's him and what's gamma which is also the only thing that makes sense since he's never worked with another Hulk before. If you really were a Marvel fan you'd get this is referring to the difference between these two Hulks and what makes them different. Her life hasn't been as hard as Bruce's which has given her greater emotional control over her anger and fear while Bruce has been traumatized so it isn't until the Blip that he's been able to gain emotional control. Bruce had issues with his rage that predate becoming a Hulk. That's his character's thing, turning into a whole other person when he gets really angry. That's his struggle and what's shaped his character. A struggle that is not universal to all characters with gamma powers which you can see over and over. What would have been actually "cringe" is if the MCU just shrugged and decided "let's pretend that Jennifer's middle class non traumatic life gives her the exact same rage issues Bruce has". That even without everything that shaped Bruce's experiences she's still as traumatized as he was. Is that what you'd actually want? Lazily cutting and pasting his character onto her? Because what I wanted as a Marvel fan was for this series to tell Jennifer's story. To use her comics as inspiration to do a slice of life comedic legal series. Not act like she's Bruce 2.0 and ignore the massive differences between them.

@@cupguin Actually, she equates her ability to control her anger infinitely better than him based on her getting cat-called (when that is really a minor inconvenience), having incompetent men explaining her area of expertise (when in a later episode men and women have to explain the basics of law to her), and how she could die due to her anger (never mind the fact that it's the angry black man stereotype that has resulted in more arrests/deaths than the angry [white] woman-unless she's a Karen when she's angry). He has experienced more rage-inducing trauma than she has, faced more dangers than her, and constantly walks in fear of not whether he would die but who he could kill if he loses control. Controlling anger IS his area of expertise yet she feels the need to explain it to him. What her speech presumes is that he, as a man, doesn't experience daily pressures that causes anger, haven't experienced anyone explaining his area of expertise to him, nor has to deal with adverse consequences due to his anger since he is not a woman.

Jen is better at controlling her anger. Feel free to compare how fast she figured out control in this series versus Bruce. Because it's true. This isn't some bizarre idea, Bruce is supposed to be bad at controlling his anger. Why do you want Jen to have the same traits and flaws as Bruce anyway? This isn't saying she's s better or perfect. This is one thing Jen is much better at than Bruce. Welcome to the difference between Hulks 101, Bruce Banner has rage issues.

"Professor Hulk" is the name of the intelligent and strong banner from the comics. Sadly, it comes from the comics, so that name is owned by Paramount. So for the MCU they can't use that organic name, and had to come up with Smart Hulk. But note that it makes the line about "you can't control it" that much funnier when it becomes a contract deal. :-)

There are several "4th wall breakers" talking directly to the readers in comics. In Marvel, the first I recall was Howard the Duck in the '70s, then She-Hulk in the '80s, followed by Deadpool in the '90s and finally the parody of a parody, Gwenpool! Deadpool was popularized but Howard and Jennifer were first. I know less DC, but there is Ambush Bug who has no powers of his own, but complains directly to the writers and artists. Also, The Joker is alleged to be aware that he is in comic book and feels he is not killing any real person to start with.

This was such a fun first episode! I haven't been following the mcu shows - mostly a mix of super burnout and general disinterest - but a half hour is more easily digestible. I have a feeling Ruffalo was only brought on for this episode and maybe the finale, just by the general writing of this first episode. Use him as the catalyst for Jen's Hulk form and setup for her character arc, bounce, come back in the finale for a big fight or emotional moment. Calling it here.

When Hulk first changed did he need to get some training on how to fight, or did he just do it? I mean, nobody knows how to punch and kick before becoming a Hulk, right? Everything about this first episode was great, I'm already invested in She-Hulk! Tatiana Maslany is great as Jennifer Walters! Love her banter and comedic chemistry with Mark Ruffalo, and she's already becoming the better and most badass Hulk between the two. Love the callbacks to Tony and Bruce's close friendship, the post-credits scene regarding Captain America's virgin status, the fourth wall breaks, everything! And it would be nice to not worry about the barfing or hangovers if you could drink as a Hulk

The Sakaar spaceship from Thor Ragnarok, which I believe is Hulk's lover from that planet and she is tracking Hulk down by a tracking device implanted inside Hulk/Banner's body without Banner's knowledge. I think his lover is here to tell Hulk about their kid, yes Hulk was on that planet for 2 years and was a celebrity, so it's natural that he would have a love life. Hulk might have been acting up because Banner took him from his woman without knowing but most viewers thought it was because he got beaten by Thanos and was just scared but was lovesick. I believe that Banner didn't come to an agree with Hulk but found a way to suppress Hulk's persona without Hulk's approval. I believe before this series is over this strange Hulk lover will catchup with Dr. Banner while he is with his friends (Wong, She-Hulk, Abomination, Titania, Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Sam Wilson) celebrating at Banner's bar on his island that Wong transport everyone there. Hulk's lover step inside the room and She-Hulk asks her who she was, and she replied to the mother of Hulk's son Caiera and right after that Hulk take over Banner's body which expand in size from smart Hulk to savage Hulk size, as soon as Hulk hear and see his lover and then he aggressively starts to attack everyone at this superhero party.... I will stop here because all of this is my theories some or all might be correct just take this information with caution or just delete from memory.

Ya Bruce was abused and tested on. His father also beat his mother to death pretty much right in front of him. But cat calling is totally worse ......HE was abused, but like. Hard disagree with Jen about that whole regulate anger speech she gave. There is no way she controls her anger more than the Hulk does. For over a decade he's had to control his emotions more than anyone on the planet. If the worst she has to deal with is catcalling and men explaining things she already knows, she's lived an infinitely more privileged life than Bruce has. Hulk tried to take his own life. Imagine comparing that to being catcalled... I'm sorry, but Hulk isjust the wrong person to complain about your emotions to and say you control your emotions more than.

I think the whole episode would have been better if the fight scene between the cousins was deleted. Like, why? I don't need to see who's stronger or who's better. I mean, I'd understand if they were siblings, but they're cousins. I never talk with my cousins, and it'd be hella awkward if we were full out brawling. Just saying, it's completely unnecessary.

They effectively are siblings. That’s the type of relationship they’ve had since they were kids. Jen was Bruce’s closest friend while growing up too. Whatever your relationship with your cousins is is irrelevant. Lots of people have cousins who are like siblings to them. I know I do.

She got shot in the comics. It started with a car accident as someone was trying to kill her and her father. Her father died in the car accident and she survived. A hit was then put out on her and she was shot. That is when Bruce did the blood transfusion. Unless this has been retconned that was the original story from the 80s comic. The MCU changes these old stories because honestly there is just not enough screen time to make all that story that the comics can do.

This is incorrect. A mob boss who was a rival of Jen's client had his men tail and then shoot her once she got out of the car. Bruce used a water hose to stop them finishing the job and gave her a blood transfusion. Her father wasn't even there and is still alive today.

The feminist elements were definitely heavy handed as I feared. However, one thing I'll give it a pass on is not giving Jen that alternate personality to wrestle with cause there actually is an explanation for that. If you have comic knowledge than this actually makes sense. The gamma radiation didn't give Bruce a split personality. He's had DID since he was little due to the abuse he suffered from his father. He always just thought this other side was an imaginary friend and ignored it till his accident. His Hulk body gave this other personality a physical form to inhabit. Ergo, they struggle with each other for dominance for years. Jen having not experienced that trauma and is too old to develop DID, has the body to herself.
