Side Note: In the comics, She-Hulk LOVES her powers and has no interest in being "an anonymous lawyer". In fact, she sees them as a gift because Bruce gave her an emergency blood transfusion which saved her life. Meaning she went from being an aspiring nobody on death's door to a superhuman renowned lawyer (very easy to advertise herself as a "super lawyer" and represent the Avengers). The point is Jennifer's life got way better thanks to the Hulk, but Bruce's turned into a nightmare. This is because the Hulk is a manifestation of one's inner psyche. Bruce is a victim of childhood domestic abuse with repressed rage and fear. And this right here means the Hulk is Bruce Banner's DEFENCE MECHANISM. If Bruce is getting angry or scared, the Hulk assumes Bruce must be in danger and bursts out to destroy everything in sight then run away somewhere isolated and quiet. "Hulk just wants to be left alone!" is one of The Hulk's most iconic lines. This is also why Hulk calls Bruce "puny" - it's self-loathing from Bruce's abuse. Compare this trauma to Jennifer's much healthier pysche with strong aspirations and it's no wonder that their respective 'Hulks' are worlds apart, and Jennifer desperately wants to help her cousin. So, if you change this fundamental part of Jennifer's character, you also change her relationship with Bruce. Yet another example of a female character being someone who girls could look up to in the 90s and 2000s, only to be "modernized" and "fixed" for bitter women. See also: Mulan.

In the comics she needed a blood transfusion from Bruce. This gives her the gamma powers of the Hulk but much milder side effects to her psyche. She was timid and meek in her human form but in She-hulk form she was the strong confident person she always wanted to be which is why Jennifer preferred that form.

She better have a character arc to be humbled by what it means to take up the mantle of a hero. But in this day and age that is unlikely.
@bambamnj2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that they changed her origin story from the comic books. I am a long time Marvel comic book reader, I quite way back when they started with all the SJW, Feminism stuff. Yes I hated Ms Marvel/Captain Marvel and continue to hate the character today with her bloviated abilities that make no sense. Anyway, in the comic books Jennifer Walters, the lawyer is shot by a bad guy. Bruce Banner is forced to do an emergency blood transfusion in order to save his cousin's life. His blood then alters her into the She-Hulk. In the movie it appears the Bruce and Jennifer are in a car accident and Jennifer pulls Bruce from the wreckage. Which makes no sense since any thinking human being would have thought Bruce would have changed instantly into the Hulk, just as he did when he tried to kill himself. Anyway, during her "rescuing" of Bruce apparently his blood somehow magically seeps into her body. (another almost completely impossible event). Not only that but enough of his blood gets into her body (not being attacked by her own white blood cells) to change her into the She-Hulk. Even putting aside all the stupidity involved in this new origin story, the big question is WHY? Why was it necessary to change the origin story? What problem did She-Hulks Marvel cannon origin story create that made it necessary to change it? One final comment: I guess Marvel doesn't understand that young boys/men are the ones who primarily read comic books. In my entire life, and I am not a young person, I have found very few women who give a sh*t about ANYTHING related to comic books. Not saying there aren't any but come on, what maybe 10%.?

Why doesn't he just suddenly turn green and assume enormous powers while his body stays the same? Or just a much smaller more agile size at least. I can't claim I have watch any series other than Moon Knight in its entirety but a collection of these new generation of heroes joining together to fight some global menace such as ending the threat of wet paper bags just seems so absurd. First they give us The Eternals and give us a poor explanation on why they weren't in End Game and then they give us Egyptian gods and goddess and their human representatives and they don't even mother asking the question where these gods were during End Game. The thing that's truly sad is, this could have been a really good buddy cop-style superhero story with Hulk and She-Hulk. In the comics, Jen got into an accident and needed a blood transfusion. The only person available was Bruce, who hesitantly agreed not knowing what the side effects of his Gamma-infused blood would be. She got a much milder version of his "Hulkness" allowing her to stay in control of herself at all times while transformed, and with enough training, became able to switch back and forth at will. I have an old She-Hulk comic from the 80's. She grew into one of my favourite Marvel-characters after a time. She was different enough from Bruce to provide her own appeal. She could control her own transformation, but she did not get stronger the angrier she got or anything. It was a fixed power level. She did keep her intellect, though. She was playful, sarcastic, flirty and had a habit of breaking the fourth wall a good decade or so before Deadpool came along. She was a bit of an 80's non-radical feminist. You know, the strong independent woman who was secure in her own sexuality? Not the angry, spiteful harpy that tells everyone how independent and powerful she is while throwing tantrums when she doesn't get her way. Walters was an interesting character. She had hit the superpower jackpot, she wasn't sulking around and bemoaning her tragic existence, she punched bad guys, made bank as a lawyer, and was notoriously fond of men, with the occasional nod to the audience and/or writer. It wasn't overly dramatic or tense, it was mostly just fun. Leave the pathos to the X-Men and Spider-Man, girls just wanna have fun. The opposite of modern, "All-New" Marvel.

_She could control her own transformation, but she did not get stronger the angrier she got or anything. It was a fixed power level._ Well, I just found this out and it's kind of interesting. See it’s not impossible. My first reaction to ultimate Spider-Man was oh cool, black Spider-Man. Then Spider-verse made me think differently about him. His story paralleled peters, but it wasn’t a copy, Peter’s was about responsibility while miles’ was about expectations. A character might seem like a trait swap, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t be compelling or interesting. Now when I see miles I don’t think black Spider-Man, I think hell yea it’s miles Morales. I changed my mind on him because I could relate to him on a personal level and I was invested in his story, and shocker, I’m not black. His race was never a driving force in his character in that movie. It was all about his personal struggles, which anyone can relate to regarding of race. That proved to me that he wasn’t just black Spider-Man, he was so much more. But when writers don’t put effort into their characters and have their race/sexuality/gender dictate their character, it’s hard to see them as anything more than those labels. If you make a show about batwoman and the entire time all they talk about is how she is a woman, it’s really hard to not look at her as Batman but a woman. So yea I agree, it’s possible, just so much damn pandering keeps obscure characters who happen to be minorities from shining. Ruins their potential. Worst of all, they’ll never been see as anything more than a black Spider-Man or female Batman

In She-Hulks origin (whether we get this or not) she is in an accident and needs an emergency blood transfusion, and Bruce is either the only one on hand or the only one who is compatible, I forget which. So the powers of Hulkiness are kind of thrust upon her so she can survive rather than her just choosing to become "a Hulk" In the comics her main struggle is initially not wanting to be noticed as She-Hulk, but eventually embracing She-Hulk as her alter ego as she realises it helps her get ahead in life, in hulk form she becomes more assertive and driven, she even uses it to gain male attention, her carrying a hunky man into bed is very her. I was actually surprised this trailer leant on her sexuality at all. However she eventually comes to realise that this isnt "the real her" and has to strive a balance between Walters and She-Hulk. She-Hulk is a pretty good legacy character, and as a fan of some of her comics, what's shown here hits the beats of her character quite well. Having said that like many others I haven't enjoyed much of the MCU in recent years and I don't have much hope for this either. I have everything crossed for it, but I have little faith.

Very well put. There seems to be this disconnect between those of us who are actually fans of the source material, brainless idiots who will consume everything with the word Marvel or Star Wars on it, and then the general audience aka normal people. I want these things to be good not because I’m a pea brained simpleton but because I love these characters so I genuinely care about how they’re perceived in popular culture. Comics are awesome, there are plenty of stupid ones but the medium itself is great. Superheroes are awesome too, it’s just like a lot of things though the general public will lose interest after a while and I think that has happened to an extent with the MCU now. Many people will see ‘she’ hulk and think it sounds stupid like it’s just some woke thing, when in fact she’s quite the opposite. To be fair Marvel is shooting themselves in the foot with this marketing, this wasn’t a great trailer, but then again it is just that, a TRAILER. Some people are so overly and needlessly critical of something they don’t even know everything about yet. Anyway, here’s hoping the ‘messages’ of this show aren’t too ‘girl-power’ heavy and more center on Jen’s struggle to balance her true self and her greener other side.

She Hulk is one of my all time favorite heroines, and even though I’ve come to understand and appreciate Eric July’s criticisms about tokenization, Jennifer Walters was always more than that. Gamma radiation affects everyone differently in the comics, so while Bruce has a Jekyll/Hyde dynamic around pure rage, Jen’s dynamic was more a shrinking violet vs powerful femme fatale charisma. Bruce hated the hulk because of how powerless and out of control he felt with his condition. Jen would literally never change back because she liked the power and thrill of being She Hulk over her normal self. They showed her as using her powers as an escapist power fantasy that was going to her head rather than the feminist power fantasy of “Yaas qween, about time the outside matched the inside,” but they also gave her an irreverent, 4th wall breaking personality that wasn’t just “me good, thing bad.” I knew I was going to regret them bringing her into the universe and this trailer has only affirmed my fears.

There was a print run of she-hulk done by the artist, writer,genius, Canadian John Byrne that was absolutely amazing. Everyone loves Deadpool with his 4th ball breaking shenanigins. Byrne did that back in the 80's with She-Hulk. Think of the old bugs bunny vs animator cartoons and extend that over a 5 year period in comic form.. The book was drawn with a lot of "cheesecake" as they used to say (especiall the covers, to this day I want Sensational She-Hulk Issue 40's cover as a poster.) The human persona was a thin mousy plain girl who felt invisible and alone, and part of the reason she loved being She-Hulk was because she looked hot and guys paid attention to her. She sort of becomes addicted to being She-Hulk and doesn't want her human life anymore. I am pretty sure this show will suck, but the Byrne run is some of the best "Crazy 80's stuff" ever printed.

If we go back to who they were as characters before THE MESSAGE took over film/show adaptations and the comics. I'd argue She-Hulk, Spider-Woman (Original only), X-23, and Batgirl really are very good characters in their own right and fairy different from the characters they're based on. That said, most of their modern adaptations are terrible. In some cases, for example, it's almost a running joke in the comics that Spider-Man and Spider-Woman have nothing to do with one another and have very different powers, origins, and pantheons of characters they hang with. Spider-Woman was nearly an Averager from day one, Private Eye, and Agent of Shield; while Spider-Man was never an Avenger (at least for his first 40 years) and just a street-level crime fighter who occasionally teamed up with The Fantastic Four and X-Men (the more successful comic lines until the MCU). This of course all changed with Brian Michael Bendis in the 2000s, basically he wanted lots of minor heroes (which included Spider-Woman, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist) to reform the Avengers with Iron Man and Captain America but back then that was a team of nobodies, so threw on Spider-Man and Wolverine on the team too boost sales... and it worked like mad. Anyways before that point Jessica Drew was basically just Jessica Jones but also working for Nick Fury and hanging with Ms Marvel (before she got hijacked herself and renamed Captain Marvel) back at this point though she actually had character and personality while being super flawed and far from a Mary Sue (my how times have changed). Anyways it was just after this run that both Spider-Woman and Ms Marvel got ruined by THE MESSAGE, they used to be incredibly good and well written characters.
@whoisamp6202 жыл бұрын
That makes me sad. I like the idea that THE MESSAGE is supposed to promote equality and whatnot, but it feels like the older (better written) characters were more capable in achieving that by creating individuals could actually empathize with. it seems THE MESSAGE's is counter productive today because it reduces characters down to one dimensional beings, defined by what makes them oppressed, yes it can be a factor but not the ONLY one.
@arczero16232 жыл бұрын
Yeah I actually really enjoyed the 2006 run of She-Hulk and can't even look at the modern comics. Ms. Marvel I actually like for her shapeshifting/growth powers. I fucking love size changing and shapeshifter/fast healing powers. So when the trailer for Ms. Marvel made it clear they're doing some crystal bullshit and completely invalidating the trials and tribulations Kamala went through with some stupid bracelet, I cannot be assed to watch that show. However, if this one keeps the original She Hulk intact, that the Hulk form is largely a boon for her career, she gets stronger/buffer in Hulk form if she does weight training in human form, and some Fantastic Four run-ins or cosmic shenanigans, the show will be all I want from it. I'm a sucker for literally stronk woman, not stronk woman TM. The forced stuff about women all having anxiety is so cringe it actually wraps around to being based. The dating over 30 message is actually relatable and relevant for women that shit isn't all peachy if you just pump and dump men. So the message of this could actually be good!

Couple things I thought about after watching the trailer 1) Dating at the age of thirty isn't depressing, especially if you're gorgeous so i don't think her dating options are so limited Not to mention she can turn 7feet tall so there shouldn't be a shortage of dudes who're more than willing to get Snu snu from her 2) Bat Girl, Super Girl even She hulk aren't inherently bad characters in the beginning it just depends on the iteration and yeah there were some bad ones that came along even today 3) Why the hell would she *willingly* undergo the same procedure Bruce did to become the Hulk especially when she she wants to be normal? The original backstory for her back in the day made much more sense in context 4) That "baseline for all women existing" dialogue speaks volumes about the type of people writing the fucking farce 5) Never seen Shang Chi (unfortunately) but I was fucking surprised to learn that Abomination was still around in the MCU 6) I feel like animated version of her as well as the Sensational She Hulk iteration I'll bet is a much better portrayal of her character than what was shown in the trailer 7) Why the hell would reporters try to hound her? Given the amount of shit that's happened in the world they live in the news of a lady hulk walking around shouldn't really be considered front page news... 8) If she's a prosecutor that deals with Super hero predicaments why didn't she try to bring Wanda to justice?

Dunno if it ever happened as a team up but I would love to see a classic SheHulk vs Matt Murdock court drama comic. What I *WOULDNT* want was to see this shitshow of a show :S Edit: my opinion is, some people in Disney want to give some of the "Messagers" some B/C-Tier characters so they can do their Messaging stuff without frigging up the heavy major players. "The baseline of any woman."- how you say you've never met a normal, stable human female in your life. But, in fairness to the character (not this version which looks awful) the comics from the 80s were in fact funny- written by John Byrne.

@@sj-kp1ks Stereotypes exist because they’re true more often than they’re not. More importantly, I don’t think the quote about fear and anger is very far off the mark in an era where women are having their reproductive rights taken away.

Having just recently rewatched Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon after not seeing it for nearly a decade I just have to shake my head in bewilderment at how both Marvel and DC struggle to portray female characters. In that film, we got two of the most compelling action characters who HAPPENED to be women ever seen on the big screen. I say "happened" because the fact of them being women was quickly and decisively put to rest by the quality of their performances, their development as characters, and their ability as fighters. They didn't have to make declarations about being women, about how hard it is to be women, how much better they have to be compared to men, how stupid men are, etc. What we got as audience members were, well, really strong, inspiring, kick-ass women. It would be brilliant to see that happen in the superhero franchises, but, alas, we'll probably keep getting these pap, superficial, and ultimately undermining caricatures of what Hollywood sees as "strength", which, unfortunately, is more about the messaging than the content of the characters.

@Tommy Taffy a progressive film? Good thing i didn't watched it, many of my chinese work friends told me its liberal garbage made to appease to pussy whipped man and middle age woman. I thought they were joking but then i saw some clips of that film, and oh boy i dodged that bullet. Thank God i didn't watched that garbage and big thanks to my Chinese colleagues. Wtf Ang Lee was thinking. Making a film to appease to westerners and insult the conservative traditions of the east. I see the underlying political message. Hulk 2003 was the only good thing from Ang Lee and life of pi too.

The original character in the comics was amazing. She was cracking jokes and breaking the 4th wall. She had her struggles but came to like herself as She-hulk. She-hulk was fun because she wasn't a carbon copy of hulk. Her journey was a great story that was engaging and fun to discover. Ultimately Jenny decides to permanently stay in her She-hulk form because she has come to accept it and it makes her feel good but that took time. I am with Drinker with this one, They are not going to have any of that in this show because that would require competent writing.

If She-Hulk is "not a carbon copy of The Hulk", why does she have the same powers, green skin, and part of his alias as her alias? Shouldn't her character be something more different than simply a female Hulk?
@Rusty_Raine2 жыл бұрын
@@Matthew-Anthony If she wasn't green and large, she wouldn't be she-hulk they would have called her something completely different. There is association but her hulk powers don't operate the same as the hulk. The creation of professor hulk is based off of how she-hulks powers work, not the other way around. You obviously haven't read the original comic books or you wouldn't be asking these questions? You should check them out and you will see what I mean by she-hulk not being the same as hulk.

@Rusty_Raine2 жыл бұрын
@@The_Oracle_58 I have been talking about the She-hulk comics. As for my view on how she will be in the show, I have watched the trend of the MCU and Disney. Big corporations run off of formulas. There was nothing in the trailer that suggest that Jenny will be making wise cracks while talking to the audience. If the trailer happened like Deadpool then I would be more hopeful for the show to be true to the comic.

Og she-hulk is smart, cunning, and funny. She had a lot more jokes in her comics and yes she was able to control and talk normally as she isn't as strong as the hulk. But one cool thing that a lot of ppl forget is that she breaks the 4th wall like Deadpool, she is just more sensible when she does it
@David8n2 жыл бұрын
An important thing to be aware of is that a lot of these subsidiary characters only existed in comics to protect copyright. So Superman spawned Supergirl; Spider-Man gave us Spider Woman; Batman gave us Batwoman. And so on. They only existed to stop the opposition from producing them. Most of the time the characters were awful, but sometimes they were good, like Batgirl. And, weirdly, She Hulk. She was a comedy character, and, weirdly she knew it in a fourth wall breaking self aware manner. The character could translate really well to the screen but given the talent on display from current writers I doubt it.

Shulkie was once one of the best comics around. She was sexy, she was funny, she was confident -- and she knew it. She was everything Jennifer Walters wasn't, which is why she chose to be She-Hulk all the time. She needed Bruce Banner's blood to survive, and the Hulk powers were a byproduct.
@josephbeckett23302 жыл бұрын
The She Hulk wasn't bad. She was sort of like a family-friendly Deadpool, believing her comic writer was out to get her. In a lot of ways, she was a female character treated like a male one, who had flaws, had to fight, lose, etc... It was sort of a oddity why she was able to be Hulk, but not a different personality or intelect, but it is what it is.
