Yup when this dropped nobody was expecting this style because it was SHINee's first group comeback in years (since the other 3 were in the military) and they decided to just take a total left turn and do something so totally different from their usual style, but they still killed it! And then they put out "Atlantis" which was like "but hey we can still do the classic SHINee style too" XD

My instant reaction the first time I heard DCM was "wait WHAT I WAS NOT EXPECTING THIS FROM SHINEE........ which actually is very Shinee. 😲👏" I think a lot of longtime fans went through that same whiplash. 😆

so people basically expected them to drop a ballad or a very soft title track after they finished military but they didn't like to go in an expected direction & expectations of others ( a lot of groups first song after military/hiatus is usually on the softer side) so this song was meant for BoA but BoA was like "this song doesn't fit a solo artist" & Minho asked to take the song for SHINee and that's how they got the song, the adjust it a lot. Both Minho & Taemin wanted something a bit aggressive and very 2nd gen esque for the comeback and yeah that's how the song came to be. they do have kinda similar songs b-sides/japanese songs but never as a title track and they were like we should do this as a title track. other fact Minho did want to write lyrics for his own parts but those lyrics were rejected because they weren't aggressive enough nor fit the song another fact this song has double meaning one for letting go of toxic ex & the other a call out for sasaeng & toxic fans by the way they did studio choom for this and did a relay dance for this as well, the relay dance is super cute lol anyway thank you for reacting to them

yep yeah when shinee announced they were having a CB a lot of people expected something melo or nostalgic in a soft way or even a ballad because a lot of groups do that after hiatus or just play it very safe and they decided to go in a route like you said very unexpected from them and very in your face a bit aggressive type of song because while they did have few songs with that energy or vibe before as b-sides, it was never a title track and they wanted to do a title tracks that they haven't do before and a wanted a title track to have 2nd gen vibe but very modern as well & very catchy like rdd & lucifer so they decided on this song. I totally agree with you this song is a very Key & Minho song while I do think Atlantis is a very Taemin & Onew song, yeah you got it right too Atlantis is more of their "sound or vibe" Thank you for the reaction look forward to see the album reaction on patreon

With "Don't Call Me," SHINee are just doing what we longtime fans have all come to expect from them -- showing us something that has never been seen or heard before and starting a new trend. Every song you hear and every choreography you see from them should be like nothing they have ever done. They are supposed to reinvent the industry with every comeback. That is why they are constantly raising the bar with everything they do. When it comes to SHINee, it should always feel "very different." That's what makes them SHINee. :D With every new song release, SHINee are expected to come out with a style and sound that is brand new, not only for them, but in the industry as a whole. And "Don't Call Me" is a perfect example of that. When someone who is new to SHINee says "this doesn't sound anything like what I would expected from SHINee," we Shawols just shake our heads, because the fact that it is unlike anything they have ever done before, is exactly what makes it a SHINee song. SHINee's whole concept is that they are an experimental group, so NOTHING they do will be similar to anything you have seen or heard from them in the past and it will be like nothing you ever hear from them in the future. The only thing you can ever anticipate when it comes ot SHINee is that it will be unique and amazing and probably one of the best performances you have ever seen. That is why they are one of the most iconic and influential groups. They are always setting trends, never following them. SHINee where designed to be SM Entertainment's contemporary, experimental boy group, so everything they do is meant to be the first and they are expected to set the trend. With every new song SHINee produces, it will always be different than the last, so you will never hear the same style or sound from them in any of their songs, even on the same album, and yet, somehow it will always sound like SHINee. The industry looks to SHINee to show them what the next song style and dance trend will be. And it is said that within 3 months of SHINee releasing their new song and choreography, you will see that same sound and style being duplicated across the industry with every comeback to follow from both boy groups and girl groups. When SHINee does something the industry takes note and follows suit. SHINee has started the trend with almost everything -- with every one of their songs to their dances to clothing trends, to live performances, to the way Kpop is promoted -- there is almost nothing that can't be attributed to something SHINee has been involved in. What you just experienced is exactly what makes SHINee legends. And this is the reason why they are so highly respected, and why almost everyone in the industry who came after them cites them as one of their biggest influences and one of the reasons why they wanted to become a singer and dancer, etc. Appreciate Minho's red hair while you can. There has only been a handful of times in the past 13 years that Minho has ever dyed his hair any other color besides brown or auburn, and when he does he only keeps it that way for a few week. :D Minho is a lead actor in a lot of K-dramas and movies and when not promoting with SHINee he is almost always working on his next TV or movie project. So, one of the reasons why I think he doesn't dye his hair as often as other idols, is because of his acting roles. The majority of the roles that he plays are boy next door-type characters or historical dramas, etc. so he needs to look as average as he can. (Or, at least as average as a guy who was born with model good look anyway ;D) Case in point, he literally dyed his hair for the MV and then dyed it back brown because he was filming a drama, and then he dyed it red again when they started their comeback activities, all within the span of a couple of weeks. Fun fact: Did you notice the aqua blue/teal accents that SHINee wore with those brown outfits in the MV? Pearl aqua is SHINee's fan color, so they incorporated the color into their outfits by, for example, weaving the aqua yarn into Key's sweater and dying the collar of onew's jacket aqua, etc. :D As the fashionista of the group Key collaborates with their stylists to come up with the concepts and styles for a lot of their MVs and concerts. So the outfits they wore in this MV, Key had a hand in creating. That is why SM has given Key the official title as SM's director of fashion. They now consult him when it comes to styling and fashion with SHINee, as well as other SM projects. You just discovered why SHINee still hold one of the top spots after more than 13 years in the industry. If you are impressed now, just wait until you go through their entire discography of songs and MVs. So far, they have 13 full-length albums (7 Korean albums and 6 Japanese albums), several repackaged albums, a multitude of mini albums, numerous OSTS, they each have solo songs and albums and there are hundreds of live performances that will absolutely leave you speechless with their talent. And it only gets more and more impressive as you follow them through their career. They have accomplished a lot in the past 13+ years and they are one of the groups that made Kpop what it is today. However, if you want to see where SHINee truly shines, you have to see their live performances. SHINee are part of the second generation of Kpop and, yet, they are younger than most everyone in their generation and are the same age or even younger than many members of groups who came after them, such as EXO and BTS, etc. which are part of Kpop's third generation. SHINee debuted young and have the experience of seasoned veterans. When SHINee debuted in 2008, Onew (the leader and lead vocalist) was 18, Jonghyun (the main vocalist and songwriter) had just turned 18, Minho (the main rapper and sub-vocalist) and Key (lead vocalist and sub-rapper) were 16 and Taemin (Main dancer and lead vocalist) was 14, so now they are all in their late 20s and early 30s. (Onew turned 32 in December.) SHINee are some of the most well respected artists in the industry. SHINee are one of the top groups for a reason, and they are known for the fact that they all can do it all. They are a group of 5 amazing vocalists, 5 impressive dancers, 5 visuals, 5 rappers, 5 top actors, and 5 of the most talented and unique voices in all of Kpop. Once you get to know their voices you will always be able to pick them out of a crowd just by the sound of their voice. Most fans will tell you we know who is speaking or singing within 1 second even with our eyes closed, with them standing in a crowd of screaming fans. Each of their voices are that unique -- there is no one with a voice like any of theirs. That is why they are "The Princes of Kpop". SHINee are known for their live vocals and amazing dancing. They are known as CD-quality singers because they sound just as good live, if not better, than they do recorded. SHINee always sings live. The ONLY thing they are not good at is lip syncing so they avoid it at all costs, so when you hear SHINee singing 95% of the time it will be live. They have trained their entire career to be able to sing live and continue to sound flawless while performing extremely complex choreography for more than 3 hours straight in concert. SHINee set the standard. That is why they are so highly respected among their peers. It is literally referred to as the SHINee standard. It's the standard all other groups strive to reach. You should also check out SHINee's live performance stage for "Don't Call Me," kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGSUYWaJqsRgma8. (If you like the piano in this song, just wait until you see their live performance. The piano becomes even more noteworthy in the live. I won't spoil it, you will just have to watch it to see what I mean. :D)

I'm so late to this even though I even requested SHINee but I'm so happy! I completely blanked that you never checked out DCM this is too funny! Your face was amazing throughout, it was hilarious to see them subvert your expectations. It was definitely a shock when it came out but in a good way, they got so much attention from it and it did way better than the 2018 TSOL title tracks, everyone was still feeling so raw at that point. They've had a fair number of more hiphop b-sides but this was definitely only title track with that vibe since AMiGo back in 2008. LSM himself loved this song and was saving it in the vault for something special which I believe is part of the reason SM promoted the track so much better than usual. I agree with so much of what you pointed out, firetruck Minho was such a look, Onew's voice is so warm and DCM was totally (FINALLY) Key's era. Sick of all your trash is iconic and magic feet Taemin is a mystery.

Because Taemin is also a member of SuperM, I think SHINee's "Don't Call Me" MV and Fake Reality teaser is SM Entertainment's way of drawing SHINee into the SM Universe and fully connecting SHINee to SuperM's/EXO's storyline. Hence, Minho's red hair and the red room with the chairs hanging from the ceiling. I think this might be connected in someway to the Red Force and EXO's/SuperM's storyline. As with everything that SM does, it's been designed to all connect. All of SM's groups' concepts and MV storylines connect together and it's all part of one giant Universe and story that started in 2012 with EXO's debut. To understand how all of SM's groups are connected, you first need to keep in mind that it all began with EXO's origin story. EXO's concept is that they are aliens from Planet Exo who have been sent to Earth on a mission to find and protect the Tree of Life from the Red Force, while also trying to fix all the things that are going wrong in the world, which are believed to be caused by the Red Force. The Red Force is thought to be here on Earth inflicting their evil agenda -- corrupting humanity and causing all the bad things that are happening in the world, such as war, hate and destruction of the environment, etc. And because EXO is trying to undo and prevent the Red Force from accomplishing their goals, the Red Force is also trying to take down EXO by capturing them, corrupting them and standing in their way, etc. And SuperM is the Kpop industry's very first supergroup which debuted in October 2019 and their concept and storyline is centered around the fact that they are Avengers-like superheros, so SuperM is the group that pretty much connects everything together. As part of EXO's story, Baekhyun and Kai -- who are members of EXO -- have recruited members from SM's other male Kpop groups -- Taemin from SHINee, Taeyong and Mark from NCT and Ten and Lucas from WayV -- and formed SuperM, to help them battle the Red Force. So, because of this all of SM's groups have storylines that connect. I see connections between EXO, SuperM, aespa and SHINee with the fact that we see SuperM riding on a subway train in their "100" MV and we see aespa in the subway in their debut "Black Mamba" MV, and now we see SHINee also in a train station in "Don't Call Me." And most recently, we saw Baekhyun from EXO/SuperM on an old train in his most recent solo "Bambi" MV. We even see Kai from EXO/SuperM on train tracks and people on a subway train platform in his "Film: Kai" solo debut teaser video during his "Amnesia" section of the video and as it transitions to "Mmmh." We also see Key from SHINee in a subway train in his solo debut "One of Those Nights" MV in 2018. And if we go back even further, you see EXO on train tracks in their "Love Me Right" MV and EXO-CBX (which Baekhyun is also a member of) on train tracks in their "Horololo" MV, etc. Which I think is all connected in someway. The train station/subway platform in "Don't Call Me" also is given a very futuristic EXO-like feel with the view of space and the planets in the sky when you see SHINee dancing on the train platform. I also think that the scene with Key in the red outfit standing on the phone booth submerged in water has something to do with the Red Force as well. In that scene we also see Key dressed in his black outfit with the feather headpiece standing in front of the image of himself, which looks as though this could be showing Key in alternate realities -- or a "fake reality." (And now that Key has released his solo "Hate That ... " MV, I think that scene with Taeyeon standing on the rock in the middle of the ocean in "Hate That ..." is connected to that scene in "Don't Call Me" as well.) Then it looks as though the members go through some sort of wormhole as they are teleported somewhere and we see them all posing in their black outfits. This looks very similar to the scene in SuperM's debut "Jopping" MV when the SuperM members are coming together at the beginning of "Jopping." The members of SuperM are supposed to be coming together to help EXO fight the Red Force and to prevent or stop them from taking over the world, etc. As "The Avengers," SuperM is taking members from each of SM's groups and joining forces to take down the Red Force. And just like how the movies "Avengers Identity War" and "Avengers Endgame" eventually had each of the Marvel Avengers members recruiting their whole crew to help in the fight, I think SM is setting it up so that all of its groups' members will eventually be brought into the fight. So, if you follow EXO's storyline, in EXO's "Obsession" MV we learn that the good guys are the members in the all black outfits, and in "Jopping" we see SuperM's "Avengers uniform" is similar all black outfits. So in the scene in "Don't Call Me," when we see SHINee all together in those black outfits, it looks as though they might be preparing to join in the fight. And because of this, I think people need to pay attention to all of the storylines with all of SM's groups, because I think at least all of SM's third generation groups' MVs and storylines -- and probably even now their 4th gen. groups with the introduction of aespa in 2020 -- are being designed to connect stories and plots. Each group has their own individual storyline and concept, but when you put them all together, there are threads of connections between the groups. And that includes SuperM, EXO, Red Velvet, NCT/WayV, aespa, and maybe even Taemin's solo work, and possibly even SHINee. Even though SHINee are second gen, they actually fit within the age group of third generation groups, so they sort of bridge that gap between 2nd and 3rd gen. That is why I think that even though SHINee are part of the second generation, that SM is now working on bringing them into the storyline. And although most of SM's older groups' concepts and MVs may have never been originally designed to have any type of connection to anything to do with anything, that doesn't necessarily mean that over the years as EXO's story has evolved or SM's Universe concept was being created, that SM didn't find "happy coincidences" within those MVs that allowed them to use them as a way to connect things together. For example, some have pointed to the fact that NingNing's butterfly in aespa's concept from 2020 could be connected to the butterfly in EXO's debut "Mama" MV from 2012, as well as the butterfly in NCT-127's recent "Favorite (Vampire)" MV from 2021, and some have made compelling arguments that it could even be connected to SHINee's butterfly in their "Ring Ding Dong" MV from 2009. Or the blue roses we see in Taemin's "Press Your Number" MV from 2016 may be connected to EXO's flower/blue rose concept, etc. Now I'm not completely convinced that SM would reach back that far, but it makes you question and consider things. :D I mean we see what looks like the pink planet from Super Junior's recent "House Party" MV and a scene from Super Junior-K.R.Y.'s "When We Were Us" MV from 2020 in "aespa's ep.1 - SM Culture Universe" video. And SM has even brought Kangta, who is a member of the very first Kpop boy group H.O.T., which debuted in 1996, into the storyline with his solo MV remake of H.O.T's song "Free to Fly." So it's starting to look like SM may be hinting at bringing everyone into the storyline, including their older groups and artists.

Actually this is SHINee, from beguinning to the end LOL never on a comeback SHINee does something similar they did before to be more precise no SHINee's song is the same or similar lol not even on the same album they are all very different I really don't understand when people say it doesn't sound like SHINee because what makes a SHINee sound is their vocals and they deliver as usual, Atlantis came after DCM if one thing we can say is constant in SHINee besides their voices is If a full album is darker the repackage will be brighter or on the other hand I can give it to you 2 examples, Lucifer darker and the Hello repackage is brighter, ODD is brighter and the Married To The Music repackage was darker, Other than that EVERYTHING they bring to the table is new and not just for them but for the industry itself , is the reason why SHINee is called a standard and trend senders, the repackage is almost the same as the repackage only bring 2 or 3 new songs when I say Darker or brighter is about the MVs for the Albums like 1of1 the MV is brighter and Tell Me What To Do MV is darker
