OK, tried it out with the cleaner you recommended on a five year old Subaru engine that's never been cleaned. I made sure to cover the alternator and the main wire harness connection. Blew out the leaves and loose dirt with a leaf blower, sprayed it down with cleaner, waited 90 seconds, then washed it off, I spent an extra 8 minutes using a wheel brush and scrubbing the big areas, then blew it off with a leaf blower. Looks great, and the car started up and ran just fine. Neighbor decided to do the same thing on his BMW 340, it turned out great and started/ran just fine (BTW, we both took off the plastic engine covers, to better wash the whole engine). As you noted - DO NOT let the cleaner sit more than 60 seconds on your engine, or it will get sticky and not wash off easily. Thank you for the great video!

For those worried about using water, just don't get water directly into your air intake or spray heavily onto electrical connectors. Just use a light spray that you would for watering plants to rinse your cleaning products off. And for those that don't have anything to dry the water off, I just used a few rags to get as much off as I could then I just started the car, closed the hood and let it idle for about 10 minutes, you'll hear squeaking probably from your belts for a little bit but that'll go away. Once I left it to dry a little I took it out for a wee drive to get rid of any small pools of water.

I understand people doing this to show cars, etc but on an everyday driver it's not wise. I do the same as you but I use a mild engine cleaner and a cloth. 1991 GMC Syclone 22,000 miles and 2001 Pontiac Trans Am Ram Air WS6 104,000 miles. I just pop the hood latch before I wash them just to have the gap for a little extra soap and water to run inside and let the water go where it will. After I’m done washing it, I have separate engine towels I use to dry the entire engine compartment. I open the hood up, dry all the wiring, plastics, hoses, body panels and as a towel gets wet I use it on the block wherever any dirt may be. It takes me a good 15-20 minutes to wipe it down. I use Zep dressing on all the hoses and plastics. I regularly get compliments on how they both look brand new, especially the Trans Am with all that mileage on it. I’ve owned the Syclone since 1996 and it was cared for by the original owner so it looks good. I bought the Trans Am new and have have done this process every time I wash them. Your engine only had a light coat of dust on it before you began. The edge of the red battery post cover is actually shining through the dust in the shot before you sprayed the engine down. Using Dawn dish detergent in hot water with a pump sprayer, and letting it sit for 20 minutes before rinsing will clean everything off the engine, even built up grease around an oil filter or filler cap... at a fraction of the cost of your cleaner.

Your belt shouldn't be squeaky when wet. If it is it's either a tension polly or a mis-alignment. Try using a Gator belt!

I plan to use this method on the engine of my 3 year old car with less than 20,000 miles after rodents chewed into the wiring harness and set off the check engine light. Since the pandemic I have not been using my car every day. I 've found acorns in the engine compartment and in the past all I needed to do was remove the debris. Now, I have to pay $$ to get the wiring harness replaced. So it's good to know I can save money by doing the engine cleaning myself.

@@peterripuli9982 if you truly want to clean your engine bay I'd do it the way chrisfix demonstrated. This way puts nearly all of your electrical components, chips and some other parts at risk especially since they didn't even show to disconnect the battery or let the engine bay dry before starting the car. Virtually every procedure shown was a "How not to clean your engine bay properly" video.

That is a very light coating of dust on a nearly new engine bay. Not a difficult test for a product IMO.

I would love to see him do this with a car that has coil over spark plugs and the computer stores under the engine bay. This is hype nowadays it's very hard to detail in the engine for the past 15 years or so. There's a lot of Technology under the hood. It's not like 25 years ago where you cover up one coil pack in an alternator and go at it
@SilverCymbal4 жыл бұрын
More videos to come on this one. But I have used many times on coil over plugs on multiple Toyotas and more complex vehicles. No issues for me at all. Electronics in the past 15 years are much better sealed. The old stuff is the issue for water.
