I've been detailing for over 30 years and I always use a pressure washer demonstrating on a car that is almost brand new of course it's going to look new when you just use a little mild degreaser and spray it off and wipe it down. On an engine that all the plastic is dried up in starting to fade you absolutely need dressing, I've never had an issue

For those worried about using water, just don't get water directly into your air intake or spray heavily onto electrical connectors. Just use a light spray that you would for watering plants to rinse your cleaning products off. And for those that don't have anything to dry the water off, I just used a few rags to get as much off as I could then I just started the car, closed the hood and let it idle for about 10 minutes, you'll hear squeaking probably from your belts for a little bit but that'll go away. Once I left it to dry a little I took it out for a wee drive to get rid of any small pools of water.

@@mplslawnguy3389 Primarily it's for resale. Most people will open the bonnet to check the engine (for what i don't know) and if it's nice and clean it makes a good impression. @@MrAdrianarellano1 Same, using simple green apc diluted 1:1 or 2:1 for a slight boost in degreasing power on engines that may have some grease/oil residue, and agitate it then rinse off, then spray on some 2:1 303 (I dilute it so it flows a bit better, getting it everywhere I need it) then buff it in. Makes engines look amazing and, while being safe for paint and aluminum, will cut through any grease or trash I need it to.

A caution for anyone with an "older" vehicle...,All that rinse water and your engine won't start. If you have an ignition system that has distributive coils with exposed leads to the spark plugs you will need to cover and / or coat the coils / distributor and leads with a hydrophobic (water repellent) spray...WD40 or similar

Thanks for this. In the rust belt we get road salt in the engine compartment during winter weather events. If you don’t get in there and rinse it off you end up with a corroded mess in a few years. Rinsing the engine and undercarriage is necessary to prolong the life of your vehicle in these areas.

Sometimes back then would occasionally get a problem with water in the electronics and it needed to be dried out but for the most parts it was fine. Nowadays with this detailing business they are making a mountain out of a molehill.

So I've only used this pressure washer one time. kzbin.infoUgkxfQauTxLT0JLSvqkq10rD79TU4k0Vz8zP The one time I used it, it worked great. I recently had new siding installed but kept the old gutters and small areas surrounding my house that weren't replaced so they looked horrible and dirty because of the new siding. I needed to get it cleaned asap. When I used the pressure washer, man it just melted all the dirt and grime that was on those areas of my house. I used that krud kutter soap and it was over after that. Easy to assemble, feels durable, very simple to use. Also, I purchased a used one to save money and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. I want to get more use out of it so I think I'll be washing the cars and update this comment as time goes on.

1991 GMC Syclone 22,000 miles and 2001 Pontiac Trans Am Ram Air WS6 104,000 miles. I just pop the hood latch before I wash them just to have the gap for a little extra soap and water to run inside and let the water go where it will. After I’m done washing it, I have separate engine towels I use to dry the entire engine compartment. I open the hood up, dry all the wiring, plastics, hoses, body panels and as a towel gets wet I use it on the block wherever any dirt may be. It takes me a good 15-20 minutes to wipe it down. I use Zep dressing on all the hoses and plastics. I regularly get compliments on how they both look brand new, especially the Trans Am with all that mileage on it. I’ve owned the Syclone since 1996 and it was cared for by the original owner so it looks good. I bought the Trans Am new and have have done this process every time I wash them. Your engine only had a light coat of dust on it before you began. The edge of the red battery post cover is actually shining through the dust in the shot before you sprayed the engine down. Using Dawn dish detergent in hot water with a pump sprayer, and letting it sit for 20 minutes before rinsing will clean everything off the engine, even built up grease around an oil filter or filler cap... at a fraction of the cost of your cleaner.

The stuff is great. It's also excellent for under areas, black plastics, shock areas. Though it has never been publicly revealed I have always believed this is the "secret" stuff the very famous detailer Paul Dalton of the UK uses. He is a master. I am more of a regular guy that just wants nice clean stuff but it's nice to have a good product.

I plan to use this method on the engine of my 3 year old car with less than 20,000 miles after rodents chewed into the wiring harness and set off the check engine light. Since the pandemic I have not been using my car every day. I 've found acorns in the engine compartment and in the past all I needed to do was remove the debris. Now, I have to pay $$ to get the wiring harness replaced. So it's good to know I can save money by doing the engine cleaning myself.

@@peterripuli9982 if you truly want to clean your engine bay I'd do it the way chrisfix demonstrated. This way puts nearly all of your electrical components, chips and some other parts at risk especially since they didn't even show to disconnect the battery or let the engine bay dry before starting the car. Virtually every procedure shown was a "How not to clean your engine bay properly" video.

Good video, thanks. I will do the same this weekend but using Bilt Hamber All Purpose Cleaner instead, it's available in Europe and especially Ireland/UK where I'm at. For dressing I'd recommend ACF-50, it's super stuff but not cheap and ideally need a compressor to apply sparingly. Anti-rust and makes plastics pop too.

Agree. The best thing to do is stay away from washing the engine bay. So many problems can arise from spraying cleaning solutions and water on it, especially on older vehicles. I understand people doing this to show cars, etc but on an everyday driver it's not wise. I do the same as you but I use a mild engine cleaner and a cloth. Unlike body cosmetics, nobody is going to see underneath the hood. As for me it's not worth the financial risk to wash an engine.

I wash my engine at the car wash, I clean the car, and I spray the engine with simple green, then I rinse it, all the while leaving the engine running, never shut the engine off!! drive home the engine will dry, then I open the hood and spray tire shine on the hole engine, close the hood and walk away, go back an hour later wipe it off, you will love the results. 😁

There are a lot of harnesses with power in newer cars when the ignition is off. Your not going to short wires and start a fire, but sensitive low voltage circuit boards and some sensors are very sensitive to even minor electrical blips. Just takes a few minutes to disconnect the battery and it's a good time to clean the battery terminals.
