back in the 80's.. i was riding with my dad and we passed a texaco station in Katy Texas.. i saw that car.. "Eliminator" on a flatbed trailer with none other than Billy Gibbons himself pumping gas into the tow rig.. i told my dad to stop i wanted to look closer.. so i'm admiring the car with a couple other people and Billy asked if i wanted to see inside.. i said yes... and he said go ahead.. and pointed to it.. so i got up on the trailer and got to open and sit inside it.. well, almost inside it.. i was 16 but already 6'4".. before he left he signed an autograph and went on his way.. fast forward 30 years and i've seen them 6 or 7 more times in concert.. and the late Dusty Hill lived in my neighborhood.. i'd see him all the time cruising in his hotrods and driving his corvette.. i'd run into him at the local grocery store.. i've had the opportunity to meet billy a couple more times.. went backstage at a couple shows.. seen him here and there.. Houston is home to the guys.. it wasn't uncommon to see them on occasion for events and stuff like that..

Those 80's videos of theirs had a recurring theme. The ZZ Top car shows up, hot women get out, and a lucky guy suddenly finds himself living out his dreams, while the band fades in and out like supernatural observers. Popular with us teenage boys watching early MTV. I read somewhere that Jimmi Hendrix was a fan of Billy Gibbons' guitar playing. Must have been way back in the late 60's.

At this time, MTV was actually a good television product. 24 hours of nothing but music videos. Every band released new videos for their singles and new albums. Many of the videos are historic. ZZ Top did an entire series of music videos from this album, which won multiple VMA awards. Eliminator was an album that I would pop into my cassette player and listen from the first track to the last. Every track on that album was solid. The band did videos for 5 songs from Eliminator. I would recommend all of them: Legs, Sharp Dressed Man, TV Dinners, You Got Me Under Pressure.

Billy Gibbons is a legend. Not only is he a guitar god who managed to impress Jimi Hendrix himself - he’s a student of music way beyond the blues rock ZZ Top made their trade mark. Little known fact: Billy introduced synthesizers and sequencers on ZZ Top’s blockbuster Eliminator album, after seeing Depeche Mode live and being blown away by how heavy they sounded without guitars or even a drummer. (If you listen carefully you can hear an incessant programmed synth pumping in the background of this song). This led to ZZ Top blowing up and selling more albums than ever before. All of which tells you something about the impact the new technology of the day had in the 80s: Everyone, down to the most conservative blues rockers, dipped their toes in the distinct new sound of the 80s.

Like the band and the trio of girls, this video is part of a trinity, so be sure to check out "Legs" and "Sharp Dressed Man." One of the things that made the 80's special, was, that all the producers who worked at making great hits of the 60's, paired up with all the bands in the 70's that learned how to master their instruments during that time. Many of the 70's bands were brought a breath a fresh air as such, and it revitalized their careers.

After that, you need to go old school ZZ Top. Waiting For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago are two songs, but they MUST be listened to together. Some other great ones are La Grange, Tush, Blue Jean Blues, Cheap Sunglasses, Beer Drinkers And Hell Raisers, Tube Snake Boogie and others

In the 80's ZZ Top came to our town with a laser show with a fog machine that blew people's minds. No one had ever seen a hologram before, and their lasers made it look like that car was coming out of the sky. Plus people were elevated too so... Yea. I haven't seen where anyone caught that on camera. Probably wouldn't look 3D anyways. Super inspiring through!

During a trip to Clarksdale MS while visiting the childhood cabin of Muddy Waters they picked up a roof plank that had blown off in a storm. They took it back to Dallas and had it made into a guitar...toured with it a year...then donated it to the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale where they had moved the cabin walls into the museum as the Muddy Waters memorial. It resides today in that cabin with the story in a glass case... Any of the first 6 to 9 albums have their best music...I like "Cheap Sunglasses" or "Heard it on the X"

ZZ Top is from Texas... a trio w/ Billy Gibbons (guitar & vocals), Frank Beard (drums) and (the late) Dusty Hill (bass & vocals)... They have always been a fun, boogie rock band w/ a goofy attitude... It was pure coincidence that when they came back together in 1979 after a 2 year break, Gibbons and Hill sported long beards (from not shaving! 😂) and the only one without a beard was named Frank Beard 😂 Billy F. Gibbons was a teen from Texas who met Jimi Hendrix around 1968 when Gibbons' band opened for the Jimi Hendrix Experience... Hendrix was so impressed w/ Billy Gibbons' guitar skills that he told all his peers that he was his favorite guitar player (To have a legendary guitar player call him that is something else!) Gibbons wanted to form a rock trio like Jimi Hendrix Experience, and by 1970... Frank Beard (drums) and Dusty Hill (bass) joined and called themselves ZZ Top... Sadly, Jimi Hendrix passed away in 1970 before ZZ Top released their debut album in 1971. ZZ Top persisted in recording and touring throughout the 70's until gold records started coming their way by 1975... Early hits included - 'La Grange' ... 'Tush' ... 'Heard it on the X'... 🔥🔥 In 1977, Frank Beard checked into rehab for serious drug addictions... so ZZ Top decided to go on vacation until Beard returned. When ZZ Top reunited w/ Frank Beard in 1979, Gibbons and Hill grew huge beards and they looked so striking when they rehearsed that they decided to keep the image for the rest of their career. They were back on tour for the album 'Deguello'. Around 1983, MTV was taking off and ZZ Top were becoming fans of 80's synthesizer pop music... so, they decided to incorporate electronics and beats to the album 'Eliminator'... It was a huge hit on MTV and the album sold 10 million copies on the strength of the videos for "Gimme all your lovin' "... 'Sharpe dressed man'... and 'Legs'... ZZ Top were huge in the 80's w/ the albums 'Afterburner' (1985) and 'Recycler' (1990)... But the 90's proved less commercially successful. By 2003, ZZ Top were unable to sell newer albums and decided to focus on touring as a 'legacy band' and promote their catalog of music. They released 1 more album 'La Futura' in 2012. In 2021, bassist Dusty Hill took a break from touring and passed away quietly at home... ZZ Top has been touring w/ a fill-in bassist.

ZZ Top had a cameo in Back to the Future 3. They were the band at the dance.

Billy Gibbons had several cameos in Bones as Angela Montenegro's father. IIRC, one of the quotes was, "I'm collecting guitars, cars and guns. If you're nice to Angela, I'll show you what I can do with the first two. If you hurt her, you'll find out about the third." (I might be misquoting here, it's been a while)

Three 3-piece bands with heavy blues roots decided to play rock-n-roll. Although Zeppelin and Sabbath had a front man - the musical core is the focus. The first Albums by ZZ Top and the others mentioned were good, but once the second albums were released - each seemed to have adopted the style that would propel them to the spotlight. I grew up with early ZZ Top and nothing matches that gritty, bluesy, hard edge style they created. I applaud them for one of the most successful make-overs a band could give themselves. While not the songs I would choose to play, I know this is the music which fills a dance floor and sometimes you have to give the people what they want. With nothing left to prove it was time to chill, have fun and move up the food chain where commercial success awaited (Back to the Future III anyone?).

Great band. My favorite from them is Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers which is very bluesy. I also really like Rough Boy which is from this same era.

Always been one of my favourite guitar tracks since I was a kid, along with Money for Nothing. You should check out their song Sharp Dressed Man, too

For me nothing evokes the 80s like ZZ Top. All their songs are great and their videos are all 'mini movies'. Musicianship - outstanding....No Aileen, you are the coolest !

I was always told that the lovely ladies in the video were all the wives of Billy, Dusty and Frank. Love this band and all your reactions.

Alleen, The rumor is a razor company offered Billy and Dusty one-million each to shave. They told the razor company, "We don't need your money!!" They kept their beards!!! And continued to make great music and videos!!! I got to see them twice --- a great show each time!!!! Take care and continue to explore ZZ's music!!!! You pretty lady are spoiling us!!!!

Some of that Texas Blues Rock right there. Have a look at LEGS. Of course ZZ Top never did a bad tune. Always good to see you rock along. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.

ZZ had tons of hits in the 70s and 80s. As a teen in the 80s it was some of our favorite music. I prefer the Afterburner album that came after this one. Thats Billy on guitar. He is a master.

Ms. Senpai...for the record, Jimi Hendrix when asked who he thought was the greatest guitarist of all time, said "Billy Gibbons" who is the singer and lead guitarist for ZZ Top (the skinnier guy with the beard lol)
