Just randomly discovered this video and channel. Big Dreamcast fan here. Probably my favorite console of all time. And I say... what you did is actually no big loss, really (maybe some of the peripherals you'll regret selling later). I see users telling you that you'll have seller's remorse, but with the world of emulation/GDEMU that we have now, I really don't think it's gonna keep you awake at night. I still have my DC collection, and up until a few years ago, enjoyed picking up the occasional new indie release, import, or leaked demo for it. Prices for some of the games were getting beyond ridiculous, even way back in 2016, when I was deepest into it. Luckily, most of those comprised of 2D shmups that I couldn't care less about. I couldn't even imagine some of the prices now. I'm glad I collected most all of what I wanted way back in '05, when everything was dirt cheap. I never felt the desire for a full set, although I can see the allure. Since the Dreamcast had such a short lifespan, it was actually quite achievable at one point. Whereas a full NES or PS2 set is a behemoth of an undertaking. Good luck to anyone trying to start something like that _now._ While the box art and everything makes me feel all warm, nostalgic, and fuzzy inside to look at and touch... you can't go home again. It's a bunch of clutter that largely sits on a shelf collecting dust, your Dreamcast disc drives are going to die eventually, your GDROMS themselves are slowly deteriorating and rotting away, and finally, everything is just far too expensive and impossible to find now. You basically _have_ to do eBay to find anything, and get price gouged to death. It really takes all the fun out of collecting. While the software _itself_ is cheaper and more accessible than ever. And to me, that's the most important thing. I've been wanting a GDEMU forever, but I've been out of the scene for a while now, and last I knew (around 2017, probably), you basically had to camp on the manufacturers website and wait for it to go live to order, and they were always gobbled up before I could get to them. As soon as I do acquire one of those, I'll be selling off my collection as well. I haven't even played my Dreamcast in a couple years now.

I plan on grabbing myself a GDEMU soon. My main problem is adding the software to run the games. Lol. I do miss my Dreamcast collection from time to time mainly when I look at the shelf that held them proudly. But I know that I achieved the goal of completing it. Albeit I didn’t have the last game I could’ve bought it at anytime over the last couple of months. I just want to do something monumental for the completion but then felt “what then?!?” I appreciate the kind words and do feel I made the right decision in the end.

I miss the days of going to retro game stores and seeing all of the gems lined up on the shelves. Now you might get lucky and see a few but then you see the 100, 200, and even more on the price tag. Those days for our generation are gone. At least we still have the memories of how it used to be.

I totally understand my man! It's really healthy to re-evaluate what our goals are for the hobby. When I first started collecting for Dreamcast, I really enjoyed playing my newly added games. There was also a lot of community playing and discussing games. When I finished my set, I realized that I still was a creature of habit and tended to play my favorites for the console. It was hard to justify some of those $300-$500 discs just sitting around, looking at you Cannon Spike, JoJo, GigaWing 2, etc. I still have a decent collection, but I may end up parsing that out even more and keeping a tiny library of around 25-30 games. Especially since it's easy to do a GDEMU or MODE solution. As much as I love the Dreamcast, it'll always be my favorite console for numerous reasons, but there's lot of other great gaming that is out now. You'll find a way to continue the channel if that's something you really want to do long-term.

I have a few ideas and products to review and might go the GDEMU route as well. Need to figure out how to load roms as the computer side of things I’m not very good with. Lol. I want the entire library again on SD card

@@TheRetrollectors You'll get it. It's not too bad. MODE is easier in some aspects than GDEMU. Personally I have the entire NTSC-U on 2 SD cards, and feed those into my GDEMU. Works well enough and playing the games ultimately was more important to me.

@@TheRetrollectors Nice! If you want to play on a modern display as well, you might be able to find the DCHDMI mod. If you were looking for a more plug and play situation (minus setting up your GDEMU) you could likely find a console already configured with an HDMI mod and GDEMU. I justified the purchase a little bit when I was selling off 70% of my Dreamcast collection and had some pocket change to spare.

I agree, I sold off my entire Saturn collection for about 10k. It just sat and sat and sat. I sold some Dreamcast stuff just the expensive games and kept the ones I actually play. The DC is my favorite console of all time I’m 39 now and still enjoy gaming not as much time to do so but the collecting part is over for me. I sold a brand new Dreamcast bundle from Costco with a extra control, vmu and nfl 2k on eBay for 2,500 last December. I’m with ya on the moving on from it. The DC will live on in hearts of many. I still have 3 used ones that work and I have child hood friends that come over and we still play 4 player virtua tennis, power stone 1-2, and a few others. Nice video man!

I finished collecting a full Sega Dreamcast set minus Sonic Adventure Limited edition around the time you started going for your set. I was a broke college student when I started and nobody wanted this stuff. I collected piles of Dreamcast and Nintendo 64 stuff for pennies each. I took pride in the fact that I never paid over $60 for any game in the set. Nowadays, I could never recommend collecting unless you have Deep Pockets. I have been thinking of selling off my entire set as well. I have 2 Dreamcasts with a gdemu in them and at this point, they are my preferred way to play. They are faster, more convenient, don't have to deal with the region BS and importantly, you don't worry about hurting your discs. There are a million KZbin videos on how to get them to work. They are super easy. Anyway, I guess I'm commenting to say best of luck to you and I don't blame you for your decision. I will probably be making the same one

I want to really look into the GDEMU so I can keep the Dreamcast content up. I was able to grab the rarer games really early in the collection and was left with the common to uncommon games. But those were the games that either weren’t very good and overpriced or okay but overpriced. Lol. I want to do some research before choosing the GDEMU route or look into MODE. Either way it’s an option. Great to hear from another Dreamcast collector

Please don't think this is a nasty comment, or a comment against collectors! It isn't, i was one of them. I used too be like so many, i had the PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, Xbox, 360, Xbox One, Amiga 32, Mega Drive and a coupe more consoles. On every console i had so many games, we are talking hundreds upon hundreds. Then all my DVD's, BluRays, 4KBluRays. Now i love gaming, movies and i also love to have a clean set up and clean, crisp home. Back in like, 2016, we moved into our new place, and it was WALL to WALL, shelves...... Just shelves in the bedroom, shelves in the spare room, shelves in the hallway, shelves in the living room of games. Then in the living room it was console after console, and i thought ''What are you doing'' lol. I wasn't collecting for me anymore, i was collecting because it was habit and too show off. Collectors don't like to admit that they are show off's, but they are.... Because they have all their boxes on show for their pals, and when that isn't happening, 99.9% of collectors make videos, on here........... Too show off. It isn't bad, just don't bulls##t me by saying people don't do it too show off. Now for me, personally, i was embarrassed.... i thought ''You Numpty'' all this money, all this time, all this stress about collecting games, 90% of which i never touched. I sold the lot, gave some away and went the total other direction, all digital. Now, my set up is as good as ever, Oled C2 Evo, day one Series X for all campaign games, newer Series X for all my online shooters, Series S for all 4K movies and smaller games. My 360 for the games that aren't back compat on Series consoles and my PS5. Any GREAT retro game worth owning, you can get with these consoles via digital or disc. Minimal space, minimal cable management, all the games i could ever want..... WAY more room in the house, and i just felt like i had a clear out in both mind and home, i didn't realise till i got rid of everything, how much it was all getting me down. I think we live in a world where people think, if you love gaming, you have too show it off by collecting everything and displaying it all..... when in actual fact, you don't at all. If you are a collector and love it, all power too ya! Do what makes you happy, life's too short. But if you are questioning it, if you are thinking ''why am i doing this''? Sell it to someone who will cherish and use it, and have a clear out.

I definitely didn’t take this the wrong way. You shared a very valid point. A collection of any kind gives the collector a weird sense of pride. We all lead a life that sometimes maybe dull and requires some sort challenge. A collection albeit: Movies, Board games, Funko’s or video games introduces a self made challenge. Not one we get from work, excercise or any other external challenge. It’s a challenge that is always changing/moving. Excuse the football reference here, but it’s similar to pushing the lines forward. We collectors will always keep pushing the line forward. We start small, our games from our childhood, then only games that we want to play, then it’s games of this developer, then it’s full libraries. We just keep pushing down the field. But when people call something stupid or pointless is really in the eye of the beholder. What others find happiness in who are we to put ourselves into the situation? I know why I started my collection and I know why I sold it. I plan on the future getting a Dreamcast emulator and look forward to pushing the lines down the field again. Lol Thank you for watching and adding a very insightful comment:)

I wouldn't want to complete a collection at all. A few reasons. -There are 70-80% shovelwares on each systems. -Price factor like the harder to get games. -Other platfoms that have that same game but at a cheaper price tag. -Limited to only that console. There are bunch of good games throughout any consoles/handhelds. Why being picky on just a particular console? Expand the playing field. -Collect and enjoy at a rightful pricetag. Maybe just be selective on particular console like pick out the best on that particular console.
@TheRetrollectors Жыл бұрын
Great points. Albeit I wasn’t upset about the shovel ware and price point. As 70-80% of the collection was bought years before the huge bump in price. But a valid point when buying games. Other consoles of the same generation have the same titles at a cheaper price point.

I myself couldn't imagine selling my Dreamcast collection. I'm like 25 left and already collected the heavy hitters years ago. All these rare and hard to find games are still expensive on all retro consoles so it'll still cost $$$ to purchase them no matter what system you'll be collecting for. I mainly purchase eBay nowadays because I never find many retro games anymore in the wild except shopping for new stuff like Xbox One, PS4, Switch, etc. I find this kinda stuff a good bit but retro related stuff almost never especially with how high it is today.I hope it works out for you and will be looking to see more videos in the near future.🙂

Thank:) I did the same thing when I started my collection 8 years ago. I got all the heavy hitters early and was left with More commons at the end. My last game was Mark of the Wolves which is about $120 and spent the last year going the ebay route. It was stagnant at the end and felt that I had to finish it not that I wanted to finish. Weird I know;) I plan on doing a GDEMU mod and having the library over two sd cards. Good luck on the remaining, let me know when you get to the end. Thanks for watching

For sure I’m miss a lot of my collection, games like Shenmue, SF3rd Strike, Soul Calibur, JSR, Sonic Adventures the list can go on and on…but it’s not like I can’t ever play them again. I do plan on modding my Dreamcast with GDEMU and have the library at my disposal. I now have an unfocused mind when it comes to buying games. I always felt bottle necked that if I came across extra money that it HAD to go to the Dreamcast. I had to buy another game or accessory. I know in my head that I did complete it (albeit 1 away) because realistically I had the ability to finish it for months. I just wanted to do something special when it came to actually doing it. Been a fan of your channel for awhile now and enjoy all your Dreamcast content! It's easy to tell you're a passionate fan of the console. I respect your decision and reasons to stop collecting, but why wipe out your entire collection? I've collected Dreamcast games for years too. When things got too expensive and opportunities outside of ebay dried up, I moved on to collect for other consoles and continued to enjoy the 100ish games I had. Plus watching them grow in value over the years is a nice perk. Did you at least burn the games you had to preserve on a MODE or GDEMU? I'm all for putting Dreamcast games back into the gaming ecosystem as they are all rare these days, but outside of physical space restraints and financial emergencies, I just can't fathom selling off my entire collection because collecting changed over the last few years. Best of luck man, I'll still remain a subscriber.

Been watching your videos for a few years and you clearly love and enjoyed collecting for the dreamcast but wow selling off everything. Would you say burnout played a factor in you making this decision to get rid of everything? As in burnt out from amassing so many games that you probably didn’t enjoy or have any emotional connection to? Or more so the crazy over inflated prices of retro games at the moment?
@TheRetrollectors Жыл бұрын
Both great questions. It wasn’t really the fact of buying games I would play, it was rather that as the years went by I wasn’t playing them as often as I once did. A lot of the games that weren’t “great or even good” I found a way to still enjoy them. The pricing wasn’t a huge factor as I would use PayPal money from sold shirts on my teepublic store (as I’m not YT monetized) to make these bigger purchases. But rather it was the lack of a connection to an eBay purchase. The final 20 or so games were eBay purchases and I only felt obligated to buy them. I still love the Dreamcast and still have a few doubles kicking around May focus on the Reproduction scene. Might go down the GDEMU way as well. Thank you for you support it really means a lot.
