Thank you for watching them! Spoiler alert: the MOST important factor is a clean work piece. After that it's adequate heat, followed by having clean solder, soldering iron, etc.

Nice explainer! I've never seen this technique (sliding down). Does the tip come in contact with the pad?

Thank you. This is a trick I picked up over the past 58 years of soldering. I've never seen it taught either so I thought I would pass it along. In the live demo at the end, I don't touch the pad directly. That works when the pad is small and the solder can heat it up. If you are working on heavier copper connections, you will have to use direct contact.

Great video, thank you. I'm very new to the hobby, forgive my ignorance: 1: Some people use blu-tak to hold components in place while soldering them, any issues? Also, I'm about to assemble a Morserino 32 PCB kit to learn morse code, the chap who makes the kits says we must use leaded wire. Here in the UK, it is VERY hard to find leaded wire from trustworthy sellers, unless you are a professional... Any thoughts on non-leaded wire? Any brands/types work better? Blu-tak eh? I've never seen someone do that, but I think it contains oil(s) of some type, and oil is one of the worst things you have around while soldering. Just the tiny amount of natural oil from your hands can cause solder to not stick well. I've only used lead-free solder on plumbing pipes, never on electrical stuff. The best general advice I can give is to use a top brand and do some research on it. Good solder with flux is very important in getting good connections.
