I really want to thank you for your devotion and talent putting out these vids. I'm not a musician, but have enjoyed electronic music since the 1970's. I built my own synthesizer in 1976--a Paia 2600--a prehistoric modular synth that came in kit form. I am now in my 60's and enjoy the amazing resurgence in electronic music. Younger folks are such an inspiration and great guys like you have helped rekindle my love for these instruments and the music made.

IzoTope sponsor the livestream so I guess it's possible. I would say, from what I have seen, this synth is very capable and i'm very tempted to order one. I think everyone who watches Sonicstate knows Nick isn't going to hold back on criticism (as he did with this vid) - He appears to be impressed with the Deepmind - and whilst it cant be everything to everyone, it does appear to be a bit of a gamechanger in terms of pricing/capabilities. I would happily watch a Behringer sponsored Sonicstate demo series (and a Markus Fuller teardown:) knowing it was sponsored.

Great review. It inspired me to purchase the Deepmind 12. I arrived yesterday. I'm a bass player and will be using this for composing. I got fed up with menu-driven-mouse-ckicking-creativity-destroying software plugins and midi controllers, so I went with the DeepMind. I'm not a synth snob. It sounds gorgeous to my ears right out of the box. I'm sure it will inspire many future compositions. Also, as a bass player using this to compose, having the ability to quickly assigning whatever chords I want to single keys is invaluable.

I find it interesting when people complain a synth, "should be X". They complained about the Minilogue that way too. It simply is what it is. Take it or leave it. Seems like the DeepMind12 is an amazing first stab from Behringer of all companies. From this demo at least, it seems utterly unique. I love Behringer for this, finally someone who listens to what people want and make it affordable also, this is the easiest synth purchase I will ever make. Thank you Behringer and keep it up, I can honestly say I haven't had much love for many of your products in the past but this seems like a step in a new exciting direction for Behringer and what a first analog synth you have made, just wow! Not saying other brands sound bad but they are expensive and in some ways they don't bring that old classic sound to the table at all even if their pricetag is steep. This sound gritty, dirty and shitty at times and I looooove that! That is what I am looking for in a synth, not some clinical harsh or stiff filter, it should be wild, raw and dirty. Congratulations Behringer, I bet you are really proud of this synth and I am a very happy future customer, you have a buyer with me no doubt! It will be such a pleasure to unpack this baby and actually see a Behringer logo on it, finally Behringer will be a german company that will go down in history with synths also, I see a future classic here without a doubt that will be used on so many tracks and will probably have a signature sound like an SH-101 or TB-303 and will be a a go to synth for certain styles. I am very excited about this synth, I was actually looking at the Modal synths for a while but their prices are just insane. They are greats synths but when you realise you get like 4-5 of these behringers if not more for the same price as a Modal 008 or 002 it gets a bit off-putting. Thank you for the review Nick, beautiful as usual.

I'm not usually someone who uses square waves very often, and being relegated to them on the second osc made me a little concerned, but they don't have that really "video game-esque" tone of many modern synths. Maybe this is because of the ramp shape that you see on the oscilloscope with the square. Regardless, it has a great tone.

On the Deep Mind 12 and so many modern synths the designers always seem to miss out implementing one-shot/free-run envelopes like on the Alesis Andromeda, Ensoniq ESQ-M and MrRack, Matrix 1000/6r, EMU Morpheus etc. I use this functionality all the time and was disappointed not to see this implemented on the Deep Mind 12. None of Dave Smiths synths do it either! Seems criminal when the sheer power of all these synths is so immense!… I love my Andromeda but am always on the lookout for a smaller format synth with one-shot capability… why is it that none of these manufacturers are implementing on-shot/free-run envelopes?

@bigPianist998 жыл бұрын
Indeed the oscillators are analog, but the effects are digital. So at some point in the machine the audio signal is converted into digital before it reaches your ear. Also, they are digitally controlled, which makes them stable on the one side, but on the other side looses that morphing and somewhat unpredictable sound that we associate with "analog" and that makes the old Oberheims and Jupiters sound greater than anything new. Still, if they implemented an analog output before the signal is converted, my interest would increase by 100 percent.
@ewanstefani8 жыл бұрын
You can bypass the effects for a 100% analogue signal path. You can also introduce instability into the filters and oscillators to achieve a more drifting sound than was possible with the Juno series. Actually they also had monophonic PWM in addition to the DCOs, plus here you have more voices to stack for subtle detune effects...

I dont record that much, I mostly play on stage. And what you hear there, is true analogue - at least in my case.

Good review Nick. One Question. How do you like the feel of the keyboard? I played one recently and was put off by it as it feels a bit too light and cheap. The unit I played was also experiencing a lot of stuck notes which required actually striking the note a couple of times to get it to stop. Since I sold Behringer in the past and experienced many issues with repairs this concerns me.

Do you think you'll add this synthesizer to your setup Nick? The patch at around 27:35 sounds to me like some of the type of stuff in your live performance videos.

Do video pt 2. What synth news is hotter that this right now?

Since it seems like Berhinger wont have the mass produced version before it hits the stores, Nick might have to send the units back so other reviewers can do reviews before it is released. Nick probably have some other gear that also needs to be returned.

The Poly Chord feature is clever. I'm surprised at how nice this seems!

Now that some time has passed, I'm listening to DM12 and Rev2 demoes, and I can't really get a clear feel for which is superior. They are pretty evenly matched synths, but I mist admit I'm leaning towards the DSI for the extra octave keyboard and the fact that oscillator two isn't stuck on square wave. That is the weirdest shit ever, but I guess Behringer was keeping costs down. Both are pretty great. We are spoiled.
@MBEG896 жыл бұрын
I have both, the deepmind can do warm and lush pads for days, it has horrible bass and good enough leads. The rev2 lacks the 4 fx slots to make the rich and lush pads but still excels at pads, can do bass and leads with ease, and has much more of a brassy texture when the filter is open. The dsi is better in almost every way but dont let that fool you, the deepmind is a fantastic poly synth and is a steal price right now. Plus theyre different enough that no comparison needs to be made.

this is such an amazing underrated synth. this synths smokes couple of high priced synth out there. i own the desktop one and i rather to work with this than my juno 106. the effect section is 2 to nene. absolutely a tremndous synth. the only shame that it doesnt have an audio input. the ios editor works flaeless, too!!
@Goettel3 жыл бұрын
I love(d) my Juno-6, but at current prices this is 20x the synth for 1/3rd the price. Audio inputs are cool, but I don't care so much about them on a poly.

I can't believe they did away with patch buttons. That's a huge hangup for me. We've had patch buttons since internal memory was a thing. "Hold on audience, I have to scroll to the next patch, just a sec!"

Great show. Does it save exactly the filter hot-spots once found? Does it recall them right? If you set one just on the turning point, does it stays there once recalled? You know, it is all about tone. thank you

@Zemael8 жыл бұрын
Maybe, but I liked very much the sounds Nick got messing with the filters on the edge. I just got curious if those crazy sounds could be exactly recalled or if it will jump each time, as the sound changes on "blocks" 9:55. Great synth, I liked it a lot.
@rebours8 жыл бұрын
All parameters can be saved and recalled, this is the advantage of having presets/digital control ! Being analog the filters' cutoff may vary a little but nothing major...

TheAvatrolOfficial I don't
@TheAvatrolOfficial8 жыл бұрын
Really? The only thing the Minilogue has going for it is the crossmod and ring modulation. The filter tracking is shit and the "motion sequencing" is over rated. I was only able to make a few nice sounding patches with that thing if I'm being honest. This thing has some real great routing capabilities, and for the kind of music I make it definitely would be the better choice. This thing is more polyphonic and it sounds fatter than the minilogue could ever sound. What are your thoughts?
@tjs60258 жыл бұрын
TheAvatrolOfficial Outside of this behringer having three times the voices (for a bit more than double the money - you can find new monologues for $450) the build quality is going to be complete garbage, the screen looks god awful (love that little oled display on the Minilogue). I could care less about wifi, iPad control(?) I would easily traded that off for better build quality. I'm just not sure Behringer would even know how to do that. For me, I can power the Minilogue on and come up with a nice sounding patch in 5-10 minutes, partially due to the motion sequencing. The layout is great. I'm not going to get into the DCO vs VCO argument. Truthfully, if I'm after voices (and don't have $3,000 to spend on a sequential prophet 6) I'd skip analog altogether and go after a Sledge or even a Nord. Heck I'd consider a $500 Roland Gaia over this probably (ok maybe not but that synth sounds massive - the pads I've heard come out of that one...) Not to mention this is coming out by Behringer who exists solely to rip off ideas and designs of other manufacturers. Tats, the guy behind the Minilogue is a great guy, super amped doing what he does and is extremely talented. I respect Korg. Can't say the same that about Behringer. It would actually bum me out to spend $1,000 on one of these.

TheAvatrolOfficial I will say that the chord/poly chord function is forward thinking. That seems to work well too.
@TheAvatrolOfficial8 жыл бұрын
That's cool, to each their own. I agree with you on most of your points actually. Don't really care about the screen, but I mean, the thing has a fan... which is already sort of a red flag I suppose. Probably best to wait off and see how many problems people are going to have with this thing... For me, it's about dsp and automation and sometimes working in the box gets boring and I'd rather use hardware. I think that's why the minilogue was a little underwhelming to me, and the deepmind with all of it's effects and routing capabilities looks tempting. I have no real desire to hit record and start playing keys, but prefer to track everything in my DAW and make use of lots of automation. The deepmind really says "studio synth", and for someone making more experimental electronic music, the deepmind just sort of appeals to my sensibilities. I agree with you about the wifi and ipad control thing, and the potential (most likely) bad build quality was something I wasn't really considering in my statement (I know the minilogue is solid from a build standpoint). Honestly, what I would like more than anything is an old school eventide, maybe the H8000FW. So god damn expensive though...

Hey Nick, thanks as always. You probably like to work from scratch all the time, but have you heard of any Patch Librarian (other than the buggy and clunky one Behringer provides) - my issue is all the duplicates, and wanting to clear up some space for the GEOcities packages which I've purchased. I've been at it for days (and nights!) and I'm not getting very far with a pad and a pencil, or with their app, which won't even print out a list of a Bank's patches. Much Thanks!
