I grew up reading the G1 Marvel comics, my favorite issue was 14, "Rock and Roll Out", introducing an Autobot group consisting of Smokescreen, Tracks, Grapple, Skids, and Hoist. These guys, led by Bumblebee, on their first Earth outing, were my dream team. My family didn't have much money back then, so I didn't have a lot of the Transformers I wanted, so my wishlist had to be put on hold. Fast forward to just recently, and I have finally completed this team in Masterpiece form. I'm thrilled! My brother asked me if I was planning on purchasing any more Masterpiece figures. I told him that I got my absolute favorites, so unless Takara did something crazy like MP versions of Powermaster Prime or Doubledealer (two of my most treasured figures from childhood), my premium collection was complete. Imagine my surprise...

Sounds like it might just be a rebranding for Masterpiece, and seen speculation that MPs might be moving towards figures with some form of combination. Which makes sense as the generation lines is now a cheaper alternative to screen accurate designs.

2:45 Yes MPG means "Masterpiece Gattai (combine)". It was originally for the Train it's ( and rumored future combiners). But I think it's just the changing of the name overall. I'm sure MP will continue as it has just under the slightly different name. I never got into MP either because they were too expensive. But I did get all the trainbots because we will likely never get standard retail versions and the MPG do scale with Generations. The individual trains and bots are great. Raiden combined is a nightmare. If we ever did get regular retail versions of the trainbots in the future, if sell my MPG on the spot.

My guess is MPG stands for Masterpiece Grade. I know the scale isn't for everyone, but when you want accuracy, Masterpiece-grade figures are the way to go. I only have three "official" figures (MP-10 Shattered Glass Prime, MP-36, and MP-44). Most of my other Masterpiece-grade figures are Fanstoys (some of the best combiners out there) and Mastermind Creations (and their subsidiaries). Unlike smaller grades, the market for Masterpiece figures is HUGE, with a wide range of brands and a lot of scale-compatible figures that aren't part of the official Transformers line. Considering the market, I just don't see Hasbro and Takara dropping the scale that Masterpiece uses, and MPG has been used by both Takara and third-party companies in past, so it makes sense if Hasbro will adopt the abbreviation and this will be little more than a "rebrand" of the official line.

Wow, they're really jumping way ahead with the MP Powermaster OP/God Ginrai figure (skipping most of the 86 movie/S3 characters and S4 characters), but I'm very excited about it. I've heard some conflicting info: At first, it was speculated that MPG-09 Super-Ginrai was just the trailer and you would need MP-60 Ginrai to complete the figure, but I believe I just read that MPG-09 also includes the base Ginrai figure as well, but the color scheme is going to be slightly different with MP-60 in toy-accurate colors and MPG-09 in cartoon accurate colors (I honestly don't know the difference as I didn't watch the Japanese cartoons). My one complaint is that the arms really jut out in trailer mode and I think the original toy did a better job keeping them compacted. I have no idea what their vision for MPG is going to be, but I'm positive and hopeful☺

I watched the Masked Singer,.....well it was amusing to say the least. Don't expect any G1 songs to be performed, actully a lot of the songs were just some of the ones that Bumblebee played on the radio in the movies. But I believe Peter Cullen did the voice of Optimus, if not then it was a good imitation. That new Masterpiece figure looks amazing. But it is sad that it could be the last of the line.

After this, Takara's next announcement will perhaps already be a trend-setter for this MPG line in the sense of whether this MPG line will only include smaller size MP-quality figures or not. I think that if the next figure is also smaller, many people will be even more frustrated with Takara's offers. But if the next one is an MP-sized figure, which we are used to before, then it would help maintain interest in Takara's MP-quality figures. In my opinion, that would be the only possibility to maintain interest. So maybe it wouldn't help if the next announcement was about a desired figure, Jazz or Cliffjumper, if they were smaller in scale. In other words, maybe quite a few will start collecting new, smaller scale, MP quality figures. It is not worth trying to reinvent the bicycle when it has already been invented and it has been proven to be good.

I am an old fan who grew up with G1 but I love pretty much every show after it, but I am always in an odd spot. I collect Legends scale from Newage, MagicSquare, Iron Factory, etc. and there aren't many channels that cover them, it's always Hasbro so even though I love Transformers I never really felt in the community in anyway. That said, I am just happy Transformers is alive and well and that it still has a loyal following.

Usually when I hear the word "Hardcore" I know that I'm in for something Awesome! And for the most part, this News Builtin was aside from the announcement of Masterpiece's retirement! My personal collection is starting to reach 50 Figures! (Including Mini Metal Figs) And I've been thinking of collecting from Takara's Masterpiece Line for some time. And to hear that they might be Retiring the line this year is a bit tragic for me. Hopefully MPG will fill the mold (no pun intended) that Master Piece will leave behind, which from what I heard it possibly will. On top of that, I'm still proud of takara Tomy for embracing the Premium Collector Market long before Hasbro ever thought of doing so themselves!

Ginrai looks AWFUL! He looks SO cheap, but they are wanting MP-44 money for him. Insanity. The Masterpiece line has become a joke in the last several years. If they don't think they can compete with 3rd party lines then they might as well throw in the towel. I can't believe they have strung us along all this time and we still don't have a MP Jazz or any of the other Dinobots. What a mess!

I agree that not every figure is gonna be for everyone. I’m a diehard G1 fan but there have been new figures of Armada and Prime that I’ve been a fan of. Won’t be a completest like I will for G1, and I can’t tell you how many versions to Ratchet and Ironhide I’ve bought, cus they keep getting better. But I agree if you don’t like it, quietly pass on it. Vote with your wallet.

MPG...if they want to continue the "Gattai" aspect, I think that they should take a step back and recalibrate...then go in balls to the walls, guns blazing, no limits...bring the cast of Transformers Superlink aka Transformers Energon to life in Masterpiece form!! Maybe even dabble in Micron Densetsu/Armada with Optimus, Jetfire, & Overload!! Also, I definitely hope there's a "MPG9B Nucleon Quest Super Convoy" repaint...for all the Black Convoy/Scourge/Nemesis Prime fans (even though Nucleon Quest Super Convoy & MP1B Convoy Black Version technically aren't Decepticons - Convoy Black Version was some sorta mass-produced Optimus clone for construction work or something, and Nucleon Quest was basically PMOP armor coated or stealth coated for going on a hunt for Nucleon...which is nuts considering that was a Marvel G1 thing in the US that led to Action Masters).

From what was released with the trainbots, it genuinely seems that TT are moving away from Masterpiece scale and using MPG as a way to reboot masterpiece engineering at a CHUG scale. It looks like 3rd party is the only way to go for MP scale now.

I could be wrong but it seems to me that this rebranding to MPG is just a way to eliminate the ‘Transformers’ logo & identity from the figure’s packaging- not at all a plan to change the scale to smaller for all releases, as many openly fear.. Am I really the only one that noticed that all MPG releases thus far have not a single ‘Transformers’ logo or written form in all main titles printed on the packaging? All that is left is a small Autobot insignia near the figure’s name/title. It smells of copyright dodging in regards to the ‘Transformers’ identity which was created by Hasbro, not Takara who created the toys. Also, looking at the price tag for Ginrai and Super Ginrai, they are prices fitting for full Masterpiece scale figures sold recently, such as MP-44S.

My wish would be that somebody would do a game and not use Michael Bay transformers and would use the looks of G1 transformers and make them look realistic in a live action movie so all the transformers would look like the Transformers from the 80s through “Transformers The Movie” !
