For a fairly simple paint scheme, I really like what you did with these; the choice of colors and the weathering give them that very nice "Star Wars" level of grittiness and grime. Very well done!

Army Painter is a good starter set, but it's not the best. You should really try out some better brands even just one or two pots at a time. You won't be sorry. GW/Citadel are great, and I also use a lot of Reaper Master Series.
@annekekramer3835
@annekekramer3835 6 жыл бұрын
As I said, never painted in my life before, so I started cheap. I will probably replace the bottles one by one with better brands. The biggest challenge so far, for me, is not something more advanced like wet blending (that is quite easy, really) but it is the highlighting stage: how to create smooth transitions! Sometimes the results are great, but sometimes the transitions are so obvious! Does that have anything to do with the brand of paint? Any advice?
@joshuagoss6896
@joshuagoss6896 6 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it can be brand of paint, and sometimes it can be that you aren't thinning them enough. Also, you can add as many "in between colors" as you need to get great transitions. There are times when I have 3-4 mixes between my base color and my highlight, allowing me to get a very smooth finish. As your blending gets better, your transitions will too. Just keep on practicing.
@annekekramer3835
@annekekramer3835 6 жыл бұрын
Tomorrow I'll do the Thief and the Minstrel, I'll try to do some more "in between"s. Also, is it me or are the Talisman miniatures much smaller than the other FFS miniatures? Can I add photos to KZbin comments?

Hi there! I find your paintings really smart : efficient with a very good looking result! I would have a question regarding the soft transition (here, for instance, the transistion on the bed roll). You say you do the transition introducing the light color (here carrick stone) in a couple of stages. I guess it depend on the size of the surface to be painted and how much you want to push the light, but in general, how many stages do you have so that you have smooth transition in the color? Thank you in advance ;-)
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 жыл бұрын

I do wish your videos we're longer :D - I Could sit here all night watching - Another great Tutorial. When you create your mixes, what kind of ratios of glaze medium and water are you using to paint? - I've been trying to copy your style a bit for blending but my colours still seem a little too thick so you can actually see the colour differences instead of the seamless blend :D
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Carl! The amount I thin the paints does vary depending on what I'm doing so it's a tricky question to answer.. all I can say is, try to analyse how the paint is behaving and adjust the consistency accordingly to get the result you're after. It does take some time to learn this but it will come with a little practice :)

Every time i shade and let the paint dry, it always looks wet, it have this shining look to it, which I'm not really that fond of. How do i get a more matt look to my shades? Great video! I am curious to know why you did not paint the soles of the shoes black? Also why do you sometimes use VMC black instead of citadel black? Thanks
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I didn't paint the soles black because I wanted to remain as faithful as possible to the actual costumes used in Episode 6. I've switched to Vallejo's Black because I find it to be a bit purer than Citadel's which has a brownish tinge when thinned, and I like the slightly satin finish :)

Sorastro's Painting ok thanks. I didn't realize that they had brownish soles in the original movies. Good to know.
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 жыл бұрын
No problem! Yes, the brown-ish soles are an odd detail but I think they strangely add quite a lot to the final look of the outfits. As a point of interest, in some of the movies you'll also see the stromtroopers with the similar coloured soles, and at other times they're a dark grey or black. (These days I have to be quite meticulous in my research!) :)

Great vid as always! I’m currently working my way through the zombicide bp miniatures to get some practice for this game. Quick question though, how do you keep the points on your brushes so well? I try to be as careful as I can, keep them clean, twist when getting paint but can’t seem to get a brush to last very long before the bristles start to split. I don’t know if it’s the quality of brush I’m using or if I’m missing some key brush maintenance step. Probably the later if I’m honest, lol!

Thank you Jacob! I don't do much to be honest - just clean them with water. I suspect the quality of the brush has a lot to do with how long they last.. :)

Hi Sorastro, great video! 3 quick questions: - Which is the airbrush do you use or do you recommend to use? - For priming (black or dark grey) and the first lights with grey and white, which nozzle size do you use? 0,2 - 0,3 - 0,4.... - For those first cenital lights (grey and white), do you recommend the "game air" colors you speak about in the video? or "model air" would be better? do you "thin" or dilute those game air paints before spraying them? Thank you.
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Cerdos! - I'm using the Iwata HP-C Plus which is nice but it really is overkill for basic priming duties. I believe something like the Badger Patriot 105 is a popular choice for basic stuff like this that isn't too expensive.. :) - The nozzle I'm using is a 0.3mm but I think up to 0.5 would be fine for this kind of work. - I haven't actually tried the "Model Air" range but I assume they behave just like the "Game Air" colours and would be fine. I like to add just a few drops of airbrush thinner whenever I use the airbrush to help prevent blockages :)

Great videos. As I do not have Citadel paints, I usually have to research Army Painter equivalents after each of your videos. Unfortunately, I've run into a problem here. Since you used a mix of Rhinox Hide and Mournfang Brown for the base coat on the bikes, I have not been able to find an equivalent. The Army Painter browns I own are Oak Brown, Leather Brown, Monster Brown, and Fur Brown. What is your advice on how I can achieve a color similar to what you used with what I have?

Hi Jason! I'll get my Army Painter paints out later and let you know what I think... :)

OK Jason - I've had a quick play and Oak Brown is actually pretty close to the Rhinox and Mournfang mix. You could add a little red (Mars Red or something) for an even closer match if you like :)

I have a question. First off thank you for your videos. Legion is getting my friends and I into the hobby and these are great. Starting to gather my supplies. My question is about the brands of paint you use. It appears you use citadel mainly but use vallejo when mixing. I could be mistaken and this is why I am asking but you appear to use vallejo for your black and whites when mixing. Could you confirm this or shed some light on when you use one brand or the other. Thanks again!
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Twisted Bat! Historically I used to use just Citadel paints, partly out of habit and partly because my wife bought me the Citadel Ultimate paint set for my birthday a few years ago! Since then I've enjoyed exploring other ranges - notably Vallejo and will happily mix brands if I prefer one paint over another, or I find a specific colour I really like in one range that there's no equivalent for in the other. You're right that I now use the Vallejo Black and White over the Citadel equivalents; this is because I find the Citadel black a little brownish when thinned, and both my Citadel whites went all lumpy and weird! In short - I'm not a "fan boy" of any particular paint brand and enjoy trying a range of paint lines - picking and choosing particular colours and paints that I like from each. I still really like the Citadel Shades for example, but much prefer the Scalecolor metallics etc... :)

Hey Sorastro, i saw you use "satin varnish" instead of the citadel "ardcoat". Is this for any particular reason? i notice that the ardcoat on my IA vader lose quality in few weeks and i must put another layer. Is the Vallejo satin varnish better to that effect? Thanks for the videos
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Cristian! I chose the Satin Varnish just because I wanted a more subtle level of shine is all. I haven't played with the minis enough to be able to comment on the hardiness of the varnish however :)

I wonder why Fantasy Flight did not produce these speeder bikes pre-cast/assembled. These fiddly bits look very delicate and problematic for play or storage. I think it would make more sense to have the entire bike - more or less - cast as 1 piece of fused plastic. The painting is as always - excellent in this video.
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 жыл бұрын
Hi John! I can only speculate that the complexity of the design requires it to be cast in separate parts? For playing with I simply handle them mostly by the base, but storage for transporting might need some careful thought :)

Love the painting guide, but I really wish you didn't rely on citadel paints so heavily, the names they have chosen have no relationship to the actual color of the paints! I much prefer Velajo and Army Painter paints and shades. Speaking of shades, I think you lost a lot of detail and made the bikes to shinny with the citadel "oils". Still enjoying the painting guides, but the colors just missed the mark for me on the bikes!
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Eric! In picking my colours I really was just aiming to recreate the look of the bikes from the movie; that might not be your thing - but that's OK! Regarding the Citadel Shades (what you call "oils") - they actually dry to a very matt finish (unless you use the gloss version) - although they obviously look quite shiny when wet. :)
