Aspyr released our favorite classic Republic Commando and...OH BOI we got a lot to talk about here. I take a look & compare the Xbox, PC steam, Switch & PS4 together to see which version works for you!

Star Wars republic commando is one of those games that you can’t help but enjoy. The squad are what makes it for me. So glad it’s making a return these days, hopefully it will lead to a remaster or better yet a sequel!

I definitely feel like you should have touched on the backwards compatible Xbox version of the Xbox one as it runs at a higher resolution and holds 60 FPS

When played on the Xbox One or the One X, I'm pretty sure it actually doesn't hold 60fps. It drops into the 40s sometimes. The Series X and Series S do in fact hold 60fps though.

Good news! They just came out with an update that they'll be addressing the framerate issue on the Switch version with a patch, starting in early May. Here's hoping it does it!

I remember playing it on the release. This and Tartakovsky's Clone Wars made the hype for Episode 3 just Unreal (pun intended). I still have a pirate PC copy lying around somewhere (yup, it was the only way to get the newest releases in a Third-World post-Soviet poopyhole). Too bad physical versions of the newest port are only available as a LRG release.

Republic Commando is an amazing game Modded on PC its a masterpiece but even the Original Xbox Version is pretty nice though the performance issues of the OG xbox version can be aliviated if played on Xbox 360 or Xbox One/Series due to the extra juice avaliable to those systems. Though I do have to admit for a port to 8th Gen systems the fact aspire didn't try anything fancy like improving textures/affects is super disappointing and the fact the game doesn't run any better on Switch compared to the original Xbox is also super sad. Given that the Switch offers performance in between something like an Xbox 360/Xbox One at the very least it should be able to stick to a healthy 60fps as a 16 year old game lol

I tested the game on the Xbox 360 and although it runs smoother, it’s presented in widescreen and is upscaled to 720p, it introduces horrible screen tearing that I don’t remember having on the original Xbox. The game runs buttery smooth (60 fps) and looks much cleaner/sharper via any of the later Microsoft consoles on Xbox One, Xbox One X, and Xbox Series S/X.

I have noticed there was quite a bit of screen tearing even on those and was surprised this was included. I know patches were introduced later to fix it. I haven't tried it in xbone family but not surprised it plays better there.

I don't think there was actually. If there was, I could see it on Switch but even then you notice the frame dips so much more. Lawd....

@@Kelphelp I hope the devs watch your video and are able to fix the frame rate issue on the Switch. I'd consider buying it again if it ran smoother, just to have the option to play it portably as well. I bought Star Wars Episode I Racer and Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast on the eShop and those games run and play great on the Switch.

I remember when aspyr used to make Macintosh games. Always was waiting for this one to come to Macintosh and now they make this game for the Nintendo switch. Always surprised they never did so but they were able to do so for Star wars: empire at war

As a kid, I had a playable demo disc on XBox, and another disc with the cinematic trailer, but I never got a chance to get it, always wanted to. I picked up the PS4 port, and man, it was awesome, devastated about the cliffhanger and lack of a sequel. Imo, I think the PS4 is a pretty good port, it's not "clean" or "crisp" looking, which is usually the downfall of many ports. I remember picking up the Prince of Persia Trilogy on PS3, and the games looked pretty bad compared to the original, the angles, low res textures, and flaws are just amplified.

I have a powerful PC but playing through this on a Steam Deck. Runs perfectly locked 60fps 99% of the time. Only issue is a minor occasional audio distortion which I believe might be a proton compatibility thing as I've seen it happen on a couple games.

I was considering picking up the ps4 version but I already own the pc version. I've experienced some weird texture glitches on pc, but I would imagine some mods would fix this. Do you think it would be worth picking up if I already own it on pc?

If you have it on PC you pretty much have the best it can run. Console on PS4 I say is more for convinience if you don't wanna sit on your desk and rather be on the couch. So that's up to you

There’s just no excuse why the Nintendo switch port is at 30fps, really poor game optimisation, it really could hit the heights of 60fps. The PC version obviously blows all other ports out of the water, I think the fact there’s a community/modders is fantastic,

I am sad to say its pretty lazy on their part too as they REALLY can optimize this and do so much better and yet that isn't the case. Modders really know what's good, and 9/10 that in itself makes it worth getting msot games on PC

I miss the multiplayer! Kinda disappointed they didn’t add that in. It’s still possible to play online on PC but you gotta jump through some hoops to do it

I get it. Costs money to keep the servers up and specially for a small team it's a bit to ask. Still would have been nice if they optimized it more

One annoying thing I had to deal with on the Steam version was getting the game to be playable. It seemed like no matter what settings I adjusted whether it was in-game, steam, or my PC itself, even on the lowest settings my mouse was WAY TOO SENSITIVE. We are talking less than a cm of movement to do a full 360 degree turn. The game on steam doesn't seem to have controller functionality so in order to use a controller, I had to manually map everything to a 360 controller via the Steam Controller which took a good minute to get running. Since I was technically still using M+KB controls on analog sticks, it made aiming and moving really clunky, but it was the only way I could play the game. I can NOT recommend the Steam version unless you know a lot more about mouse settings than I. It was incredibly frustrating and I was far happier with the Xbox One port.

It's dirt cheap on PC usually a couple dollars. Fantastic to play on there

I think the xbox version is more tolerable at 480i on a crt. I played that version this year when I got a new crt and xbox, and had a positive experience. Originally I played it on pc but I put it down b/c it's mouse and keyboard controls were a little clunky. Happy to hear all ports are worth checking out. It's a bummer the switch version loses a bit on performance. That said, being able to play it portable is a huge plus. P.s. I don't know if you're aware of matrix path of neo, but it's a game that feels good on pc,ps2, and xbox. On pc it even uses the mouse buttons as attack and dodge like the modern Arkham games.

The og xbox version of Republic Commando also works very well on xbox one/ Series via backward compatibility at 4k60fps

The Switch version fixed some of the widescreen issues, like the compass. And the HD Rumble is nice. I don't think it's fair to claim they didn't care.

The game barely can run on hardware that can do more. Anyone who has played this prior to release can tell it was pretty lazy how nothing was done. The bare minimum was almost met.

I already have this game on PC, but I was hoping to get it on Switch for the portability. After finding out about the performance I think I'll just stick with my Steam copy

@@Kelphelp yea at one section the whole squad was completly down as there was a glitch with the dev menu. If you cheat to much the door won't open on the ghost ship were you have to get 62. Instead if you noclip and try to convince someone to help him he will get stuck and by pushing he dies ( the that trys to help 62).

7:20 Aspyr didn't add any of those control options. Those were all already available in the original xbox version by LucasArts.

@@Kelphelp There was, I play it on my xbox often. Just like PS4 and switch, you can't change look/move, scoreboard, and switch weapon bindings. Everything else you can change on original xbox, PS4, and switch.

Damn, it’s a real shame about the performance on the Switch, I was thinking about getting it because it’s on a handheld now. Considering older Star Wars titles have been ported to the switch without issue, I wonder what went wrong with this one

It seems pretty simple as to why. This definitely seemed like a more demanding title on the Xbox, and with little optimization on Switch it basically couldn't do it. The switch should be able to play but without optimization, it won't run as it should.

That’s one of the only ways to play multiplayer on republic commando these days and I have gotten close to getting it to work to where the server pops up in the multiplayer search menu but no one has been able to join the server but me. If you don’t know, just wanted to check.

I have Republic Commando for PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch and I gotta say the Xbox version is superior in my opinion :) I play it on Xbox Series X on a 65 inch QLED TV and it runs amazingly smooth and looks great!

@@Kelphelp Definitely! Everything I play and watch on it looks amazing with HDR and Dolby Vision HDR :) I got a really high-end TV that can run up to 120hz. I saved a ton of money for it! Combine that with a Series X, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and it’s a gamers dream!

@@Kelphelp You should totally get a high-end TV! It’s well worth the money 😁 I recommend the Vizio P series Quantum. That’s the one I got. It’s $1,200 but that’s actually a great price considering what it’s capable of. I think it’s almost as good as an OLED ❤️

@@Kelphelp it displays really deep blacks almost as good as the LG OLED’s can do. It also has 4 ports, 2 of which can run at 120hz. The peak brightness is 1100 nits, (1200 nits for the 75 inch) and the HDR is excellent. It also has variable refresh rate :)

I’ve been playing the Switch port of this and it’s super choppy and the framerate is soo bad still. I don’t understand how the Switch can’t handle games that are almost 20 years old, but it can handle modern games like Mario Kart 8 just fine without any frame drops :/ Aspyr needs to patch Republic Commando in my opinion. As well as KOTOR 2

Beware of people who blame the Nintendo Switch hardware... Crytek made Crysis 1!! for Nintendo Switch... The Unreal Engine used by Republic Commando is barely UE 1.5/2.0 and if we do the simple observation of playing Crysis 1 on Nintendo Switch... or the PS3 Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen on Nintendo Switch... which basically that port was made by Capcom putting in the extra work to make the game give you MORE than the PS3's power in portable or your hands on battery... it is quite a shock... Thus it is sad when Aspyr just clearly did not do the proper extra work on this game... another reason is that on PS4 alone there are over 140 million PS4s sold worldwide... and Nintendo Switch has a crazy 50 million systems plus plus sold worldwide too... these types of things should have been taken seriously by Aspyr regardless of any schedule or budget claims because not only is that old version of UE old and these hardware newer but there is simply no excuse. Gamers don't always rely or professional or even influencer reviews... much less tje casual Star Wars fans especially when the Mandalorian and Bad Batch shows were pretty widely available and popular or successful... which is basically FREE ADVERTISING for Republic Commando as a game and IP... meaning that even this sloppy port will possibly sell at least 40 million copies... at minimum... and at the budget price... if the quality was better then you'd have the added word of mouth recognition by hardcore gamers and retro gamers... which alone boosts that figure to double plus millions.

There was just enough cat in this video to justify a like... more cat, more like But seriously, so many trash games get remasters. Bad remasters at that. But Republic Commando doesn't? When it actually deserves a Remake! Not only got we starved for Star Wars games in general by the POS company called EA for over a decade now. And when there was a SW game, it was bad by any sense of the word! And this re-release/port is once again, supbar at best. Its disgusting how this industry is keep dishing out BS after BS. And no one can hold them accountable. Try that in the car industry or any other. Companies would go bankrupt as they deserve it!! Republic Commando needs a modern looking *Remake* without messing too much of the original game design. And its a short game to boot, so development can be quick and cost effective. Why is no one doing that for the easy cash?? People still love SW, they would be happy with it. And the game has a fanbase on top of it to justify a good REMAKE! Look, this game has its issues. Its not a masterpiece but good, its one of those games i played several times in a row, beating it on all difficulty levels. I don't do that with many games.
